Trick (Japanese:トリックTrick) is a non-damagingPsychic-typemove introduced inGeneration III. It wasTR38 inPokémon Sword and Shield, and isTM109 inPokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Effect
The user switchesheld items with the target. If only one of them is holding an item, the item is moved to the other.
Trick fails if:
- Neither Pokémon has a held item.
- The user is awild Pokémon.
- The target is behind asubstitute.
- The target hasSticky Hold (even if it has no held item).
- It is used in theTrainer Tower orTrainer Hill.
- Either Pokémon is holding:
- ane-Reader Berry
- Mail (except in the Japanese version ofPokémon Ruby and Sapphire)
- anyZ-Crystal
- aDrive, if either Pokémon isGenesect
- aMega Stone, if either Pokémon could use it toMega Evolve
- acolored orb, if either Pokémon could use it to undergoPrimal Reversion
- aMemory, if either Pokémon isSilvally
- aRusted Sword, if either Pokémon isZacian
- aRusted Shield, if either Pokémon isZamazenta
- aBooster Energy, if either Pokémon is aParadox Pokémon (excludingKoraidon,Miraidon,Gouging Fire,Raging Bolt,Iron Boulder andIron Crown)
- aWellspring Mask,Hearthflame Mask, orCornerstone Mask, if either Pokémon isOgerpon
Additionally, in some generations Trick can fail under additional circumstances.
In Link Battles, battle facilities,Secret Bases, and theTrainer House, items stolen will be returned at the end of the battle.
Generations III and IV
In JapanesePokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Trick can exchangeMail, but doing so may causeMail corruption. In international releases of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, as well as all releases of subsequent games, Trick will fail if either Pokémon is holding Mail.
In these generations, Trick fails if either Pokémon hasMultitype or either Pokémon is holding aGriseous Orb.
Generation V onwards
Trick no longer switches a Trainer's Pokémon's items permanently; however, items switched in wild battles are permanently switched.
Trick can now exchange the Griseous Orb, but still fails if either Pokémon holds the Griseous Orb and either Pokémon isGiratina. Trick can now exchange items with a Pokémon that hasMultitype, but still fails if either Pokémon holds aPlate and either Pokémon isArceus.
If powered up by aPsychium Z into Z-Trick, the user'sSpeed is boosted by two stages, then the move itself fails after obtaining the Z-Power since it is not possible to exchange a Z-Crystal.
Trick will always fail when used in aMax Raid Battle or aTera Raid Battle, regardless of the items or target. (It works as normal againstDynamax Pokémon in other battles.)
InPokémon Sword and Shield, due to a presumedglitch in accounting for the removal ofcolored orbs, Trick would fail in versions 1.2.0 through 1.3.1 if it was used by or againstGroudon orKyogre and either the user or the target was not holding an item. This behavior was corrected in version 1.3.2.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
Trick swaps the user's and the target's held items. Prior toSuper Mystery Dungeon, this move will fail if at least one of the Pokémon is not holding an item. From Super Mystery Dungeon, the move will still succeed even if either the user or the target does not have an item.

Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, Trick isHoopa's first move. It is obtained by reaching level 4 and upgradingConfusion into it instead ofHyperspace Hole. The user creates a link between itself and an ally Pokémon using a ring, increasing both of their movement speeds and granting them each a shield for a short time. When the user uses Shadow Ball or performs a basic attack, the ring on the linked Pokémon also unleashes the same move or attack. The user can also use this move on itself, increasing user’s movement speed and granting itself a shield for a short time. Additionally, it increases the damage dealt by Shadow Ball. At level 10, this move also restores the linked ally Pokémon’s HP when it deals damage to opposing Pokémon. While in Unbound form, this move is replaced byPsybeam.
