Transform (Japanese:へんしんTransform) is a non-damagingNormal-typemove introduced inGeneration I.

TheAbilityImposter has the same effect as Transform.

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:
  • Does it copy Protosynthesis/Quark Drive boosts?
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

Transform causes the user to become a copy of the target. A transformed Pokémon returns to its original state once it isswitched out, faints, or the battle ends.

If powered up by aNormalium Z into Z-Transform, the user's HP is fully restored.

Transformation conditions

Transform bypassesaccuracy checks to always hit, unless the target is in thesemi-invulnerable turn of a move such asDig orFly. It is not affected bytype immunity. Transform fails if used on a Pokémon that is protected byCrafty Shield, but works on a targetprotected by other moves such asProtect orDetect. It also fails againstShadow Pokémon, if the user or the target are disguised by anIllusion, if the target is behind asubstitute, or if the target'sAbility isGood as Gold. Some of these conditions were different in older generations; see the table below for details on when conditions would not prevent Transform from executing.

Gen IGen IIGen IIIGen IVGen VGen VIGen VIIGen VIIIGen IX
Can execute?Target issemi-invulnerable
Target is transformed
User is transformed
Target is behind asubstitute

InPokémon Stadium only, Transform fails if the target's current species isDitto. Transforms works normally against Ditto in the earlier Japan-only gamePokémon Stadium.

Starting with Version 3.0.1 ofPokémon Scarlet and Violet, Transform fails if used in a battle against awild Pokémon when used by any Pokémon other thanDitto orMew. This was done to address acloning glitch involving wild Smeargle using the move, though it also affects a Smeargle owned by the player.

InPokémon Black 2 and White 2, Pokémon that know Transform are banned from participating inPokéstar Studios films.

Copied traits

Broadly, Transform copies the target's appearance, types,Ability, stats, andmoves; the user retains itsHP andlevel. More precise details are below.

*: InGeneration II, theLove Ball uses copied IVs for transformed wild Pokémon.See below

Transform copies any changes to the target's type (such as fromConversion orColor Change), Ability (such as fromSkill Swap), or moves (viaMimic). It also copies types added byForest's Curse orTrick-or-Treat. If the target has lost a type fromRoost, Transform will copy the target's type(s) from before Roost was used. If a dual-type target has lost a type fromBurn Up orDouble Shock, Transform will copy the remaining type only. If the target has lost its only type (not counting added types) from Burn Up or Double Shock (thus becoming typeless), Transform will copy Normal type.

The user's level has no effect, except in GenerationsI-IV if the Pokémon levels up and its stats are recalculated. Appearance refers to the sprite or model of the Pokémon shown on the field and covers the Pokémon's species, gender, form, and whether it isShiny. (Prior toGeneration IV, there was some complicatednuance regarding the transformation's coloration.) The copied stats (Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, Speed) include the final values (as seen on thesummary screen) as well as the target'sbase stats, individual values, andeffort values. Outside of the transformation's appearance, gender (for the purpose of battle mechanics as well as the gender symbol after the name) was only copied starting inGeneration V, witha small exception inGeneration II.

It also will not alterstatus conditions or volatile statuses based on the transformation's immunities. For instance, a Pokémon remainspoisoned even after transforming into a Poison or Steel-type Pokémon, and remainsseeded byLeech Seed even after transforming into a Grass-type Pokémon.

InGeneration I only, if the player's Pokémon is transformed and deals or receives acritical hit, its untransformed stats are used in the damage calculation. (The calculation correctly uses transformed stats for wild and NPC Pokémon.)

Appearance nuances

In all generations, in the summary andparty screens, a transformed Pokémon is shown in its untransformed state. (This applies to its moves, Ability, and stats as well.) InNintendo DS and3DS games, the list of moves seen on the bottom screen during battle will also show the untransformed sprite of the Pokémon.

In Generation I, if either the user or the target's sprite has changed because ofAcid Armor orMinimize, after using Transform, the transformation's normal sprite will be shown.

In the Generation I and IIcore series games, a transformed Pokémonretains its original color palette.

InPokémon Stadium 2 and Generation III games (includingPokémon Colosseum andPokémon XD: Gale of Darkness), whether a transformed Pokémon appears Shiny depends on whether the user was originally Shiny; since Generation IV, it depends on whether the target was Shiny.

InPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, if thePartnerPikachuP/EeveeE is the target of Transform, Transform will copy anyclothes they are wearing.

Forms

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:Gen III: Interaction with Deoxys's forms in link battles between games in which Deoxys has different forms
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

Transform copies the target's current form. In GenerationsIII andIV, a transformed Pokémon can change form if it fulfills the conditions for a form change (such as byholding aPlate asArceus). SinceGeneration V, a transformed Pokémon cannot change forms.

Dynamax transformations are not treated like a form, meaning Transform will copy the base form of a Dynamax orGigantamax Pokémon orEternamaxEternatus, and a transformed Pokémon is able to Dynamax. If Transform copies a Gigantamax Pokémon, it does not copy the Gigantamax Factor, so Dynamaxing will not result in a Gigantamax Pokémon. If Transform is used by a Dynamaxed Pokémon, it will fail if the target isZacian,Zamazenta, or Eternatus.

Transform will fail if the target is aStarmobile. If the target is aTitan Pokémon, the user transforms into a regular version of that species.

Terastal phenomenon

Transform does not copy Tera Types, meaning that a transformed Pokémon thatTerastallizes will use its own Tera Type. If a Terastallized Pokémon uses Transform, the move will not change its type.

Transform fails against a TerastallizedOgerpon orTerapagos. If a Pokémon Transforms into Ogerpon or Terapagos, it will be unable to Terastallize.

If a Pokémon Terastallizes into theStellar type and uses Transform, it will fail.

PP

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:Are PP Ups taken into account for maximum PP displayed for a transformed Pokémon in Generation I and II?
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

When a move is copied, it will have 5PP, unless its maximum PP is less (such asSketch). In Generations I and II, the maximum PP is the same as the move's natural maximum PP; in Generations III and IV, each copied move receives the effect ofPP Ups applied to the same move slot of the user's original moves; since Generation V, the maximum PP for copied moves is 5.

In Generations I-III,PP-restoring items such asEther can only restore PP to a move if the Pokémon knew the move before transforming. For a heldLeppa Berry, if a move the Pokémon did not know reaches 0 PP, the Berry will not trigger.

Using other moves and Abilities

Transform does not affect the user'sHidden Power (whosetype, as well as thepower up to Generation V, are based on the user's original IVs).

In Generation II,Attract works according to the target's original gender.

InGeneration II only,Mirror Move always fails when used by a transformed Pokémon.

Telekinesis still works when the target is transformed into Pokémon that would normally be immune to it.

A transformed Pokémon can useHyperspace Fury if transformed intoHoopa Unbound.

A Pokémon can use aspecies-exclusive Z-Move if transformed into the correct species and holding the respectiveZ-Crystal, except ifMega Evolved.

If a Pokémon transforms into Meteor FormMinior,Shields Down will not prevent it from being afflicted with status conditions.

A transformation cannot be transferred viaBaton Pass.

Items

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:For Gen VI: Interaction with choice items on targets who also know Transform aside from Generation V
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

A transformed Pokémon retains its original species for determining if it is boosted by most Pokémon-specificstat-enhancing items. OnlyMetal Powder andQuick Powder use the transformation's species.

For the purposes of theEviolite, the original species of the user is considered, rather than the Pokémon it Transformed into.

Poké Balls

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:Fill the gaps for the Poké Balls
  • Original or transformed species for Fast Ball, Moon Ball, Repeat Ball, and Beast Ball
  • Original or transformed gender and species for Love Ball from Gen III onwards
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

This is taken into account when using certainPoké Balls on a transformedwild Pokémon:

Contests

InPokémon Ruby, Sapphire, andEmerald, during aPokémon Contest, the Pokémon will transform into one of the other contestants.

InPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum, during aPokémon Super Contest, the Pokémon will transform into one of the other contestants.

InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, during a Pokémon Contest Spectacular, when Transform is used, asubstitute doll is thrown on the stage and the user transforms into the doll. The effect of Transform will last for the round it is used in.

Glitches

Main article:List of Transform glitches

Generation I has several glitches relating to Transform. Any transformed wild Pokémon will become Ditto if it is caught, due to theTransform assumption oversight. If a transformed Pokémon uses Transform again, its previous stats (stored as a backup) are overwritten by its current stats (as they are backed up so that Transform can change the working stats); this is theTransform DV manipulation glitch. If a Pokémon that is notDitto uses Transform, thecolor loss glitch will cause it to change to Ditto's palette. Thelevel up moveset glitch causes a transformed Pokémon to regain its original moveset if it levels up and learns a new move.

Generation II has several glitches relating to Transform. TheTransform assumption glitch andTransform DV manipulation glitch from Generation I still exist. The latter now has an additional effect, theRoar/Whirlwind shared DV glitch: in a battle with an NPC, if the NPC's Pokémon has used Transform twice and is forced to switch out, the next Pokémon will have its predecessor's DVs. If a transformed Pokémon is caught, it will have 10/10 PP for Transform despite having used the move.

In other games

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

InRed Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, theExplorers series, and theAdventure Squad series, Transform causes the user to take the form of a random hostile Pokémon on the dungeon's floor. It does not copy anything else; if the Pokémon had nothing but Transform, they are left only with theregular attack andStruggle. Transformed Pokémon are still prone tostatus conditions anddungeon tile restrictions from its original form; for example, aDitto transformed into aFire-type can still beburned, and a Pokémon that cannot walk through water still cannot when transforming into a Pokémon that is able to. Transform also cannot be used in aPokémon Tower in the Adventure Squad series.

FromPokémon Super Mystery Dungeon onward, Transform copies the appearance, type, mobility, Ability, moves (with full PP), and stat modifications of the target for the duration of the floor, but the transforming Pokémon retains its stats and move ranks. As with other statuses, the effect wears off if the user faints. When used onCastform,Cherrim, orAegislash, the user will retain the copied form regardless of weather orStance Change. Transform also fails if the target is currently disguised withIllusion. If transforming into aGigantic Pokémon, nearby Pokémon will be moved away to make room. Moves learned throughSketch while transformed will be forgotten after moving to the next floor. If Transform is used by an enemy on a team member, the target's teammates in the room becomeconfused. This often occurs after stepping on a Dittotrap, as it spawns a Ditto that acts immediately, unless the trap activator has aTravel Speed boost.

With some exceptions, Pokémon learnsets match those from the core series games:

Pokémon GO

In aGym orRaid Battle, Transform is automatically cast at the beginning of the battle. It turns the user into a copy of the opponent and copies the opponent'smoves, species, base Attack, and base Defense; HP,IVs, andpower up level are not copied. Unlike other attacks, Transform does not require the user to wait out the duration before casting an attack or dodging, and its animation is purely visual. However, it may cause lag for the rest of the battle if the player attempts to attack during the animation. The effects of Transform expire at the end of the battle.

Transform will not be cast if the opponent is a Ditto.

If Ditto is used against aTeam GO Rocket Grunt or another player, Transform will behave like regular attacks and not transform Ditto into opposing Pokémon.

Trivia

  • In Generation I core series games andJapanese Pokémon Stadium, if two Pokémon battle using only Transform (such as a battle between twoDitto or twoMew with Transform), both Pokémon are able to continually Transform into each other, replenishing the 5 PP constantly and so that the battle never has to end.
  • Since the Transform user retains its own gender, it is possible to transform into a Pokémon species which would be normally unavailable with that gender. For instance, a maleSmeargle retains his gender (including the symbol ♂ displayed in battle), even when transformed intofemale-only Pokémon such asMiltank,Chansey, orTsareena, or intogender-unknown Pokémon such asMewtwo,Beldum, orCryogonal.
    • The Transform user copies the appearance and visual gender differences of the target, even if those are not compatible with the Transform user's gender. For instance, if a male Smeargle copies a femalePikachu, then he will have the appearance of a female Pikachu as well (with the heart-shaped tail) even though he remains male like before (with the ♂ symbol in battle).
  • Transform is the only legitimate way to see the battle animation ofCherrim'sSunshine Form inGeneration IV, as Cherrim sent from a Poké Ball will always be sent out in Overcast Form, and Cherrim is not available in the wild in Generation IV. A Ditto that transforms into Cherrim, however, will play the animation of the alternate form if it escapes from a thrown Poké Ball.
  • In GenerationsI andII, since most Pokémon can use Transform viaMimic and keep their originalcolor palette while transformed, it is possible to see several color palettes applied to any Pokémon. For example, if aPikachu,Bulbasaur, orCharmeleon uses Transform (via Mimic), it becomes a yellow, green, or red version of the target, respectively.
    • In these generations, the Pokémon images and their color palettes are stored separately in the game data, so the palettes are able to be arbitrarily applied to each Pokémon. There is no need to store repeated Pokémon images with different colors in the internal data.
  • FromGeneration III toV, a transformed Pokémon may legitimately have up to 765EVs (if it has 255 HP EVs, and the target Pokémon has 510 EVs other than HP). Similarly, fromGeneration VI onwards, a transformed Pokémon may legitimately have up to 762 EVs (if it has 252 HP EVs, and the target Pokémon has 510 EVs other than HP).
  • In the German version of theGeneration II games, this move was renamed fromWandler intoVerwandler. The reason for this is unknown. Even though the difference in meaning is minimal, this change was retracted in the following generations.
  • In some Pokémon media, Ditto is known to transform into humans. This happened inPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon andPokémon GO, as well as involume 2 ofThe Electric Tale of Pikachu, in thePokémon Newspaper Strip, and inPOKÉMON Detective Pikachu.
