Torkoal (Japanese:コータスCotoise) is aFire-typePokémon introduced inGeneration III.

It is not known toevolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Torkoal blowing smoke

Torkoal is atortoise-like, quadrupedalPokémon. It has a large, black, rock-like shell with holes that glow with a red warmth. Its skin is reddish-brown with gray-black bands on its legs and neck. It has a long neck and its eyes seem permanently closed.

Torkoal lives inmountains and volcanic areas, where it looks for large deposits of coal. It uses the coal to fill the hollow spaces in its shell and then burns it for energy. Because coal is Torkoal's source of energy, it becomes weak and immobile once it runs out of coal to burn. If the fire inside of Torkoal's shell goes out, it will die. A Torkoal is healthy if the smoke spouting from its shell has tremendous velocity. When it blows out smoke from its nostrils and the top of its back, it sounds like a locomotive horn. If it is attacked, it blows black smoke out of its nostrils before fleeing. Torkoal's shell also serves toshield it fromcritical blows. Prior toGeneration V and inGeneration IX,White Smoke is itssignatureAbility.

Trivia

Origin

Torkoal appears to be based on atortoise. It may be based specifically on ared-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) — the species namecarbonarius means 'coal-like', referring to its resemblance to a lump of burningcoal, similar to Torkoal's shell.

Torkoal's shell may also be inspired by dome-shaped rustickilns utilized to produce charcoal, or by certain types of cookingovens. It may also be based on akitchen stove's top or its gas burner. Alternatively, it may draw inspiration from acenser or thefirebox of asteam engine, as hinted by its formersignature ability.

Name origin

Torkoal and Cotoise may be combinations oftortoise andcoal, and a homophone ofkotatsu, a Japanese heating table which was traditionally powered by coal.
