Thunder Wave (Japanese:でんじはElectromagnetic Wave) is a non-damagingElectric-typemove introduced inGeneration I.

It is:

Effect

Generation I

Thunder Wave has 100% accuracy andparalyzes the target.

Thunder Wave takes types into consideration, so it cannot usually affectGround-type Pokémon. This will take type changes into account, such as if Thunder Wave is affected byNormalize (which would makeGhost-type Pokémon immune to it).

In the Generation I handheld games only, Thunder Wave can affect a target behind asubstitute.

Generation II

In the Generation IIcore series games, when an in-game opponent outside of theBattle Tower uses Thunder Wave, the move has a 25% chance to fail.

Generations III to V

Thunder Wave can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points ifCharge was used in the previous turn. It can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causingHex andSmelling Salts to give extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

Ground-type Pokémon holding aRing Target can be affected by Thunder Wave.

Generation VI onwards

Thunder Wave can no longer paralyzeElectric-type Pokémon, due to them being immune to paralysis.

Generation VII onwards

Thunder Wave's accuracy was lowered to 90%.

If powered up by anElectrium Z into Z-Thunder Wave, the user'sSpecial Defense stat is raised by one stage.
