ATeam Magma Grunt (Japanese:マグマだんのしたっぱTeam Magma Underling) is a type ofPokémon Trainer that debuted in theGeneration III games. They are the peons ofTeam Magma. There are male and female versions, but they all dress in the recognizable red outfits associated with Team Magma.

In the games

InPokémon Ruby andPokémon Omega Ruby, they serve alongside the primary antagonists while inPokémon Sapphire andPokémon Alpha Sapphire, they assist the player in stoppingTeam Aqua. InPokémon Emerald, Team Magma Grunts share the role of the antagonists alongside theTeam Aqua Grunts.

They generally use a combination ofGround-,Fire-,Poison-, andDark-typePokémon.

Pokémon the Series

Team Magma Grunts have made several appearances inPokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, using their Pokémon to infiltrate a target or to helpTabitha out. Magma Grunts debuted inA Ruin with a View, where they tried to find ancient Pokémon in the ruins underOldale Town. They usedProfessor Alden to guide them there, and after collecting data from the ruins, escaped in their helicopter. InA Three Team Scheme!, they dug into a special shrine underground onDewford Island, searching for Groudon and theCave of Origin.

InThe Spheal of Approval, two Grunts, along with Tabitha, tried to steal a curious stone linked withGroudon from theOceanic Museum. They successfully escaped with most of the stone. They appeared again inFight for the Meteorite!, where they stole ameteorite fromProfessor Cozmo and used it to power a machine to disturbMt. Chimney. They battledTeam Aqua and won, but their plans were ruined byAsh andhis friends. Their last appearances were inGaining Groudon! andThe Scuffle of Legends!, where the awakening ofGroudon andKyogre caused mass destruction before the two Pokémon calmed down. No Team Magma Grunts were seen again after this episode, with the exception ofBrodie, who appeared as an independent criminal inThe Ribbon Cup Caper.

Team Magma Grunts have multipleHoundoom that they used in their plans. InA Ruin with a View, they used them to infiltrate aPokémon Center so they would not get in their way. Then,Team Rocket attacked and sent outArbok andWeezing, who were too scared to fight and returned into theirPoké Balls. They made a brief appearance in a flashback inA Three Team Scheme!.

Houndoom's only known move isRoar.

They appeared again inThe Spheal of Approval, where one used aShadow Ball to stopCaptain Stern from intervening. It, along with Tabitha's Mightyena, then tried to stopAsh,his friends,Marius, and Stern from taking their briefcase by usingHyper Beam before escaping.

InFight for the Meteorite!, they used them along with theirGolbat to battleTeam Aqua'sCrawdaunt andWalrein. The Golbat and Mightyena were able to defeat all of their Pokémon. Their final appearances were inGaining Groudon!, where they attackedAsh andhis friends. Then, whenPikachu absorbed theBlue Orb, it knocked them out. In thenext episode, they battled Team Aqua's Walrein.

• In the English-language dub ofGaining Groudon, Tabitha directly addresses one Magma grunt asDerrick. This makes him one of the very few villainous team grunts in the franchise to have a confirmed name.
• InPokémon Black 2 and White 2, a former Magma Grunt can be found inIcirrus City during winter, appearing as aRoughneck. He is in a relationship with a former female Aqua Grunt and neither seems to know the other's previous affiliation.
  • InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there is a former Magma Grunt with a former Aqua Grunt hiding in the Battle Resort, afraid that their respective teams will disapprove. Whether they are the same couple in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 is unknown, due to the couple's awareness of each other's past.
