TAG TEAM (TCG)

TAG TEAM cards (Japanese:TAG TEAMTAG TEAM) are a classification of cards in thePokémon Trading Card Game that were introduced in theTeam Up expansion. TAG TEAM cards appear as eitherPokémon-GX that feature two or three Pokémon, or asSupporter cards which feature two characters working together. Each TAG TEAM card has ateam bonus, which is an optional effect added to the base effect of the card under certain circumstances.
TAG TEAM cards are distinguished by aTAG TEAM label below the card's name. TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards are considered cards with aRule Box; however, TAG TEAM Supporter cards are not.
TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX

All TAG TEAM Pokémon areBasicPokémon-GX. These cards combine two or three Pokémon that have the sametype to form a team, which is reflected in the card's name and artwork focusing equally on each Pokémon.
TAG TEAMS have moreHP than regular Pokémon-GX. When a TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX is Knocked Out, the opponent takes threePrize cards instead of one. The Rule Box is colored silver, with a yellow border and name tag. This supersedes the normalPokémon-GX rule, which is not printed on these cards.
TheGXattack of a TAG TEAM card is called aTAG TEAMGX attack.[1] These attacks have a "team bonus", an additional effect that only applies if a condition specific to the card is met.[2] In most cases, the requirement is the Pokémon having extraEnergy attached to it in addition to the attack's cost. For example,Charizard & Braixen
'sCrimson Flame Pillar-GX attack costs one
Energy, and the team bonus occurs if the Pokémon has one additional Energy attached to it. A TAG TEAMGX attack has a '+' sign next to the attack's cost.
Some cards have further variations on team bonus requirements, including specifying that the additional Energy has to be of a specificEnergy type (such asGardevoir & Sylveon
'sMagical Miracle-GX) or requiring a specificSupporter card to be played during that turn (such asReshiram & Zekrom
'sCross Break-GX).
TAG TEAM Pokémon cards featured in expansions are accompanied by the usual Full Art and Rainbow Rare variants as well as a second, alternate artwork variant. With the exception of theReshiram & Zekrom
andSolgaleo & Lunala
variants from the JapaneseDream League subset, all Regular Pokémon card prints feature artwork byMitsuhiro Arita.
The TAG TEAM GXmarker is released alongside TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards. This marker functions the same as the regular GX marker, differing in only its colors, which matches those of TAG TEAM cards.
TAG TEAM Supporter cards

TAG TEAM Supporter cards were later featured in theCosmic Eclipse expansion. These cards feature two characters, and they also have a "team bonus", which is a secondary effect that can be used at the cost ofdiscarding some number of cards from the player'shand.[2][3] This cost cannot be paid if the team bonus would have no effect, but can be paid in order to play the card if the card's first effect does not affect the game state.[4]

Trivia
- According to the game's director,Atsushi Nagashima, work on the TAG TEAM mechanic began during theBlack & White Series.[5] During development, other proposed drawbacks to TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX included granting the opponent four Prize cards upon Knock Out, allowing the opponent to use two GX attacks during the match instead of one, or giving the cards multiple weaknesses.[6] Mitsuhiro Arita has stated that more than 100 different combinations of Pokémon were considered for TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX cards.[7]
