Surf (Japanese:なみのりSurfing) is a damage-dealingWater-typemove introduced inGeneration I.
It is:
- HM03 fromGenerationsI throughVI.
- TM94 inPokémon Sun and Moon andPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
- TM47 inPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
- TR04 inPokémon Sword and Shield.
- TM95 inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
- TM123 inPokémon Scarlet and Violet.
- TM073 inPokémon Legends: Z-A.
Effect
In battle
Surf inflicts damage.
Surf can hit during the target'ssemi-invulnerable turn ofDive, dealing twice thedamage in all generations except inGeneration IV, where thepower is doubled instead (resulting in virtually the same effect).
If aCramorant withGulp Missile uses Surf (orDive), it catches prey andchanges forms, unless it already caught prey or isDynamaxed.
Generations I and II
Surf's power is 95.
Generation III
In aDouble Battle, Surf hits both opposing Pokémon.
Surf can be used as the first move of aPokémon Contest combination, causingDive to score double the normal appeal if used in the next turn. It can also be used to finish a combination, with the user gaining 3 bonus appeal points ifDive orRain Dance was used in the previous turn.
Generations IV and V
In a Double orTriple Battle, Surf now hits all adjacent Pokémon, including allies.
Generation VI onwards
Surf's power has been reduced from 95 to 90. Surf will also destroystalagmites found in the background ofbattles.

Outside of battle
In allcore series games up toGeneration VI and inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Surf is afield move; it can be used outside of battle to travel overbodies of water.
InGeneration I, the only way to use it is by selecting this move on theparty screen if the player is standing on land while facing a water tile. FromGeneration II onwards, it is also possible to use it by simply pressing A to interact with the water tile.
A surfing player can resume walking by simply moving onto land. Alternatively, the surfing player can face a land tile and use Surf again from the party screen.
When surfing,Pokémon Trainers andwild Pokémon can be encountered (though only specific places contain Pokémon found via surfing in Generation I). The other field movesWaterfall,Whirlpool, andDive may only be used outside of battle when the player is surfing. Since Generation III, the player is also able tofish for Pokémon while surfing.
Surf is required to complete almost all games where it is usable outside of battle, with the exception ofPokémon Black and White. This move is needed to reach some cities, towns, and ultimately thePokémon League where theElite Four reside.
Badges
In certain games, Surf requires a specificbadge to use outside of battle; the Soul BadgeRBYFRLG, Fog BadgeGSCHGSS, Balance BadgeRSEORAS, Relic BadgeDPBDSP, Fen BadgePt, or Rumble BadgeXY.
Speed
The speed of Surfing has varied back and forth through games:
- In Generations I and II, and inPokémon Diamond and Pearl, the speed is the same as walking.
- In Generation III, and fromPokémon Platinum onwards, the speed is the same as running.
Appearance
When Surf is used outside of battle, the surfing Pokémon is controlled by the player. A generic aquatic Pokémon shape is used for most or all Pokémon in a given game. InGenerations I andII, the player character is not seen in the surfing sprite; only the Pokémon is seen. Starting inGeneration III, the player character is visibly riding the surfing Pokémon as well.
- InGeneration I, the surfing sprite used for almost all Pokémon resemblesSeel andDewgong. This is the same generic sprite that represents fifteenWater Pokémon species in theparty screen, although thecolor palette is not the same.
- InPokémon Yellow, ifPikachu uses Surf outside of battle, the sprite is asurfing Pikachu.
- InGeneration II, the surfing sprite used for almost all Pokémon is aLapras. This Lapras is red if the player ismale, or blue if the player isfemale. This is the same Lapras sprite used in theparty screen.
- IfPikachu uses Surf outside of battle, the sprite is a surfing Pikachu as well. This Pikachu has a red surfboard if the player is male, or a blue surfboard if the player is female.
- InGeneration VI, surfing onLapras specifically will show the player riding on Lapras instead of the usual generic shape. InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire,Kyogre,Wailmer, andSharpedo all have their own surfing models; additionally, Kyogre moves faster and has a larger hitbox, while Sharpedo moves twice as fast as normal but preventsfishing.
- InPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, when Surf is used via theHidden Moves app, the player will be shown riding aBibarel.
Water tiles
- Main article:Water tile
In several games, there are watercurrents where the surfing player is forced to go in a certain direction. They are found in theSeafoam Islands,Hoenn routes132,133, and134, as well as inUnova Route 17.
In several games, there isshallow water andpuddles where the player walks instead of surfing. For instance, shallow water is found in theShoal Cave, and some puddles are found inHoenn Route 120.
InPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there are some fast currents at theSevii Islands where the player is unable to use Surf.
Step counting
| This move effect may be in need of research. Reason:Check if the Generation I facts remain true in later generations You candiscuss this on the talk page. |
InGeneration I, at the exact moment when the player uses Surf from theparty menu (going from land to water, or from water to land):
- A Pokémon deposited in thePokémon Day Care does not gain experience.
- This does not count in the process of apoisoned Pokémon losing HP every four steps.
- The remaining number of steps ofRepel,Super Repel, andMax Repel is not affected.
However, if the player goes directly from water to land, this counts as a regular step.
Cycling Road glitch
InGeneration I, due toa glitch, if the player saves at theCycling Road and then creates a new game, it will not be possible to use Surf outside of battle (or use theBicycle) in the new game until the player does any of these things:blacks out (either in battle or the overworld), usesDig,Teleport, orFly outside of battle, uses anEscape Rope, or enters and leaves the Cycling Road.
Legacy
FromGeneration VII onwards, Surf is no longer afield move. InPokémon Sun, Moon,Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, its functions are given to theRide PokémonLapras andSharpedo. InPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the player can useSecret Technique Sea Skim instead. InPokémon Sword and Shield, the player can travel across water after getting theirRotom Bike upgraded. InPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Surf is usable in the field again, but now it is accessed via thePokétch rather than a party Pokémon. InPokémon Scarlet and Violet, the player'sKoraidon orMiraidon can travel across water in Swimming Build or Aquatic Mode, respectively.

Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, Surf isSlowbro's,Greninja's, andCramorant's first move, as well asBlastoise's second move.
Blastoise can obtain the move by reachingWartortle stage at level 7 and upgradingSkull Bash into it instead ofRapid Spin. The user rides a large wave in the designated direction; damaging, knocking back, and stunning enemies hit for 1.6s. The user is unstoppable while surfing, and once it ends, the user can jump in a designated direction. The wave continues for a short duration after the user has leapt off and continues to knock back enemies hit but inflicts no damage. At level 13 or higher, the user gains a small shield when hitting an enemy with Surf.
Slowbro can obtain the move by evolving fromSlowpoke at level 4 and upgradingWater Gun into it instead ofScald. The user rides on a wave, damaging, knocking enemies back, and throwing them in the air briefly. Two more waves follow after the first, damaging and slowing enemies. At level 11 or higher, the second and third waves will now also throw enemies in the air, and the second wave will knock them back.
Greninja can obtain the move by evolving fromFrogadier at level 7 and upgradingBubble into it instead ofWater Shuriken. The user dashes on a wave, damaging enemies and healing themself for each enemy hit. Enemies below half health are dealt bonus damage, and if this move KOs an enemy, the cooldown is reset. At level 11, the healing increases.
Cramorant can obtain the move at level 6 by upgradingWhirlpool into it instead ofDive. The user sends a wave in a designated direction, damaging enemies that make contact with the wave. Once it reaches its full distance, the wave bounces back – further damaging and pulling back affected enemies. The user catches prey with the first wave, and can enter the wave that returns to catch prey forGulp Missile. At level 13 or higher, the wave also slows down enemies.

Trivia
- Some of the Pokémon that can learn Surf, likeBarboach, appear to lack the physique required to transport a human being at sea.
- Junichi Masuda revealed in an interview that Surf is his favorite move.[1]
- Surf andFly are the only HM moves that become special moves on certain Pokémon, both onPikachu.
- However, sinceGeneration VIII, Pikachu can learn this move viaTM/TR, so it is no longer a special move.
- InGeneration VI, Surf and Fly are tied for having the highest base power of all HM moves. Prior to Generation VI, Surf had the highest base power.
- IfSecret Power is used in the ocean inGeneration III, it will have the animation of Surf.
- There isan unused item allowing players to cross water, identical to Surf inRed, Blue, andYellow.
- Muddy Water has the same animation as Surf, except that the water is brown rather than blue.
- In theStadium series,Colosseum,XD, andBattle Revolution, whenPikachu uses Surf, a surfboard appears underneath it, and whenRaichu uses Surf, it surfs on its tail. This does not occur in any core series games.
- InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire,a glitch causes the game to freeze if the player is surfing on aWailmer and it evolves while the player is fishing.
- When using this move outside of battle, the text will always say "The water is a deep blue", even in cases where the water is not blue, such as the turquoise water at Unova'sVillage Bridge.
