- This article is about thegame type once called Metal. For the TCG type, seeMetal (TCG).
TheSteel type (Japanese:はがねタイプSteel type), originally called theメタルタイプMetal type in thePokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo, is one of the eighteentypes. It was introduced inGeneration II, along with theDark type. As well as introducing newPokémon andmoves with the Steel type, two Pokémon were changed to have the Steel type. Steel-type moves are super effective againstFairy-,Ice-, andRock-type Pokémon, while Steel-type Pokémon are weak toFighting-,Fire-, andGround-type moves.
Battle properties
Note: Type effectiveness multipliers may vary in othergames outside thecore series.
Additional effects
Steel-type Pokémon are immune to damage from thesandstormweather condition.
InGeneration II, Steel-type Pokémon can only bepoisoned by theBug-type move,Twineedle, due to their immunity toPoison-type moves, and cannot bebadly poisoned. Starting fromGeneration III, Steel-type Pokémon cannot be poisoned or badly poisoned at all unless the opposing Pokémon has theAbilityCorrosion, introduced inGeneration VII.

As ofGeneration IX, 81Pokémon are Steel-type (counting those that are Steel-type in at least one of theirforms, includingregional forms), which makes up 7.9% of all Pokémon, making it the 8th raresttype among Pokémon afterRock and beforeDark.

In the TCG
- Main article:Metal (TCG)
Introduced in theNeo Genesis set, Metal-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak toFire andFighting with resistances toGrass andPsychic. Metal-type Pokémon can be strong againstWater andFairy, whilst someWater andLightning Pokémon can resist this type.
Trivia
- The Steel type has the most resistances of any type.
- As ofGeneration IX, Steel-type Pokémon have the highest average baseDefense of all types.
- Generation VII introduced the most Steel-typePokémon of anygeneration, with 14 (countingSilvally holding theSteel Memory), andGeneration VI introduced the fewest Steel-type Pokémon since the type was created, with four.
- Generation VIII introduced the most Steel-typemoves of any generation, with eight, and Generation VI introduced the fewest Steel-type moves since thetype was created, withone.
- InGeneration II, the Steel type saw one type change in a Pokémon family (Magnemite andMagneton), but no change in moves. The opposite is true for theDark type, which saw one type change in a move (Bite), but no change in a Pokémon.
- This makes the Steel type the only added type to not have a previously introduced attack have its type changed.
- Before Generation VI, Steel was the only type that had a non-neutral type match-up with all the seventeen existing types, considering both the offense and defense of both types. In Generation VI, it was changed so that Steel no longer resisted Dark- orGhost-type moves.
- Each of the threefirst partner Pokémon types inflict a different amount of damage when attacking a pure Steel-type Pokémon (Grass does ½× damage,Water does 1× damage, andFire does 2× damage).
- This trait is also shared by theBug type.
- The Steel type is tied with theDark type for most Pokémon that gain it upon evolving, with a total of thirteen each.
- The Steel type is the only type that resistsDragon-type moves.
- All types that are super effective against theFighting,Dragon, orFairy types are either resisted by, or have no effect against the Steel type.
- Despite being introduced inGeneration II, there were no pure Steel-type Pokémon untilGeneration III, withMawile (at the time) andRegisteel.
- Every generation since the Steel type debuted has introduced at least one Steel-typespecialist.
- The Steel type is the last type to receive aTeam GO Rocket Grunt type specialist inPokémon GO.
- The Steel type is tied with thePoison type for being the most common type amongUltra Beasts, with three Ultra Beasts being Steel- or Poison-type each.
- The Steel type has been paired up with every other type except forNormal (not includingPokéstar Studios opponents).
- The Steel type resists every type that it is supereffective on. It shares this distinction with theFire type.
- The Steel type is the only type that has lost resistances.
- According toJunichi Masuda in an interview with Journal du Geek in 2013, the Steel type's effectiveness against the Fairy type stems from the folkloric belief of fairies being susceptible to iron and other metals[1] (the specific type of iron is traditionally known as "cold iron").
