Status
Spore is an example of a status move.

Thestatus move (Japanese:変化技(へんかわざ)changing move)category includes several moves that do not directly inflictdamage, unlikephysical andspecial moves. Status moves include moves that change theweather, inflictstatus conditions, or raise or lower thestats of a Pokémon, among other effects.

Starting inGeneration IV, status moves are identified by their symbol as seen in the Pokémon'ssummary. In these games, the category of a status move is labeled "STATUS" when checking a Pokémon's moves in battle. The term "status move" was first used inPokémon Battle Revolution.

Status moves typically do not employtype effectiveness, so may affect Pokémon regardless of their types; however,Ground-type Pokémon are immune toThunder Wave based on type interactions, andGhost-type Pokémon are immune toGlare based on type interactions in GenerationsII andIII only. Furthermore, status moves may be unable to affect Pokémon based on type-related interactions other than effectiveness; for example,Poison-type Pokémon cannot be afflicted withpoison and are thus unaffected byPoison Gas (unless the user hasCorrosion).

The majority ofNormal- andPsychic-typemoves, as well as the only???-type move (prior to Generation V, when the type stopped existing), are in this category. Very few moves of the other 16 types are status moves; for example, theDragon-type andFire-type only have three status moves each.

In the GenerationI andIIcore series games, when an in-game opponent outside of theBattle Tower uses a status move that would decrease one of the target's stats, that move has a 25% chance to fail in addition to its normal chance to miss.[1] In the GenerationIIcore series games, this condition also applies to status moves that would inflict anon-volatile status condition upon the target.[2]

When a PokémonDynamaxes, its status moves temporarily becomeMax Guard.

Terminology

Several other terms have historically been used for status moves:

  • InPokémon Stadium andPokémon Stadium 2, the termsspecial technique orspecial move (Japanese:とくしゅなわざspecial move orとくしゅわざspecial move) refer to status moves—this is distinct from the term "special attack", which refers tospecial moves in these games.
  • Starting inPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the phrasehealing or status-changing move orhealing or stat-changing move (Japanese:回復技(かいふくわざ)能力変化(のうりょくへんか)(わざ)healing move or stat-changing move orかいふくの わざや のうりょく へんかの わざhealing move or stat-changing move) is used in the description ofSnatch.
  • InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the termchanging attacks (Japanese:へんかわざchanging move) is used for one of the three lists of TMs for sale, which are based on the move's category, at the Exchange Service Corner from theBattle Frontier (unlike inPokémon Platinum, where there is a single list of TMs available for sale in the Battle Frontier).
  • InGeneration V, the termstatus-changing move (Japanese:変化技(へんかわざ)changing move) is used in the description ofMagic Bounce andWonder Skin. These uses changed to "status move" starting in Generation VI.
  • InPokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, andSky, it is referred to asOther (Japanese:へんかChanging).
