Spider Web (Japanese:クモのすSpider Web) is a non-damagingBug-typemove introduced inGeneration II. Prior toGeneration V, it was thesignature move ofSpinarak andAriados.

Effect

Generation II

Spider Webprevents the target fromswitching out orfleeing (including viaTeleport). It bypassesaccuracy checks to always hit, unless the target is in thesemi-invulnerable turn of a move such asDig orFly. Spider Web's effect only applies as long as the Pokémon that used it remains in battle.

It will hit the target even if it has usedProtect orDetect.

The affected Pokémon can still switch out viaBaton Pass, but in that case, the Pokémon that switches in will now be affected. Conversely, the Pokémon that used Spider Web can switch out with Baton Pass and the effects of Spider Web will still apply. Also, if the affected Pokémon isRoared at or hit with aWhirlwind, they will still be switched out.

If awild Pokémon uses Spider Web on the player's Pokémon, the player will be unable to escape.

Generations III and IV

Pokémon affected by Spider Web can escape (but not switch out) if the Pokémon has theAbilityRun Away or is holding aSmoke Ball.

It is now blocked byProtect,Detect andCrafty Shield.

Pokémon affected by Spider Web can now switch out withU-turn.

Spider Web can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points ifString Shot was used in the previous turn.

Generation V

If a Pokémon traps a target with Spider Web and then switches with Baton Pass the target will no longer be trapped. Pokémon affected by Spider Web can switch out withVolt Switch. Also,Dragon Tail andCircle Throw will force the affected Pokémon to switch out.

Generations VI and VII

Spider Web no longer affectsGhost-type Pokémon.

Pokémon affected by Spider Web can also switch out withParting Shot.

Spider Web can also be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, giving the user an extra three appeal points ifString Shot was used in the prior turn. It can also be used to start a combination, causing certain moves (Explosion,Memento,Perish Song andSelf-Destruct) to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

If powered up by aBuginium Z into Z-Spider Web, the user'sDefense stat rises by one stage.

Generation VIII onwards

Spider Web cannot be selected in a battle.
