Chargestone Cave, an area inUnova with a special magnetic field.

Aspecial magnetic field (Japanese:特殊な磁場special magnetic field) is whereMagneton,Nosepass, andCharjabug can evolve intoMagnezone,Probopass, andVikavolt, respectively. The term itself comes from several of Magnezone's Pokédex entries, which cite it as the cause of itsEvolution.

In the core series games

Vast Poni Canyon, an area inAlola with a special magnetic field.
  • InSinnoh,Mount Coronet contains a special magnetic field. Magneton and Nosepass may evolve anywhere in Mount Coronet, including exterior areas, theSpear Pillar, and theHall of Origin.
  • InUnova,Chargestone Cave contains a special magnetic field. This magnetism is also evident by the cave's puzzle: the player must push stone fragments blocking some passages so they are attracted by larger magnetic rocks, making it possible to continue.
  • InKalos,Route 13 contains a special magnetic field that is produced by the nearbyKalos Power Plant. Despite the special magnetic field being produced by the Kalos Power Plant, Nosepass and Magneton will not evolve if leveled up inside the Power Plant.
  • InHoennORAS, a special magnetic field is present inNew Mauville.
  • InAlola, a special magnetic field is present inBlush MountainUSUM andVast Poni Canyon.
  • InHisui, a special magnetic field is present in theCoronet Highlands.

There is no special magnetic field inKanto,Johto,Galar, orPaldea. InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, this means that Magneton and Nosepass cannot evolve at all—Magnezone and Probopass can only be obtained by trading withPokémon Diamond, Pearl, andPlatinum.

SinceGeneration VIII, Pokémon that can evolve using a special magnetic field can alternatively evolve viaThunder Stone, aside from Nosepass inPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. This is the only Evolution method available inSword, Shield,Scarlet, and Violet. InPokémon Legends: Arceus, both Magneton and Nosepass can be evolved using either the special magnetic field or a Thunder Stone. InBrilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, both can be used to evolve Magneton, while Nosepass requires the special magnetic field.

In spin-off games

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

InPokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness,Explorers of Sky, andGates to Infinity, due to the wayEvolution works, Magneton and Nosepass evolve through the use of theCoronet Rock.

BecausePokémon GO uses real-world locations, being within range of aPokéStop outfitted with aMagnetic Lure Module is required to induce Evolution in Magneton, Nosepass, and Charjabug.
