History

The great tree that stands in the center of Sootopolis City inPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Sootopolis City is located inside of a giant crater.

InPokémon Ruby, Sapphire, andEmerald, the crater is that of an underwater volcano which erupted and forced itself out of the sea many years ago, eventually filling with rainwater, also known as acaldera.

InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the crater was formed by a giant meteorite impact into the ocean of the Hoenn region a thousand years ago, eventually filling with rainwater. People soon began to dwell in the crater for its warm, fresh water and a city soon came forth. The great tree in front of theCave of Origin was received fromAZ when he visited from theKalos region. A flower similar to the one held by AZ's friend, theEternal Flower Floette, can also be seen near the tree's base. The seal onSky Pillar can also only be opened by a descendant of the ancient Sootopolitans.

To navigate the city, people have to climb many flights of stairs andDive under the sea. This causes many of the locals to get into good shape.

Role

Delta Episode

During theDelta Episode, afterSteven has informedWallace of the plan to enter theSky Pillar, Wallace is outside theCave of Origin talking to the guard about the great tree. He invites the player to follow him to the Sky Pillar's entrance onRoute 131, then leaves.

After leavingIzabe Island,Ash andhis friends arrived in Sootopolis City inThe Great Eight Fate!, with Ash hoping to earn his finalHoenn LeagueBadge from the localGym Leader so that he could enter Hoenn'sPokémon League Conference.

Upon arriving, the group learned of an event at the local amphitheater, where they sawJuan, theSootopolis Gym Leader, putting up a captivating display with hisWater-type Pokémon.Team Rocket interrupted the festivities and attempted to steal Juan's Pokémon, but were quickly dispatched of by hisMilotic. After the incident, Juan and Ash's group boarded a boat to the Sootopolis Gym. Along the way, Juan revealed that in addition to being a Gym Leader, he was also aTop Coordinator, explaining the beauty of his earlier performance.

At the Sootopolis Gym, Ash learned that the Gym challenge would consist of aDouble Battle followed by a Single Battle, with the Gym's battlefield being changed between rounds. Ash succeeded in defeating Juan'sSealeo andSeaking to clear the Double Battle round, moving him on to the Single Battle round. The battle continued inEight Ain't Enough! and eventually ended in Ash's victory, earning him theRain Badge and qualifying him for theEver Grande Conference. Juan also informed the group of an upcomingPokémon Contest inPacifidlog Town, whichMay was eager to participate in, so the group decided to visit there before they'd head toEver Grande City.

Ruby & Sapphire arc

Sootopolis City was first mentioned inStick This in Your Craw, Crawdaunt! I, whereMr. Briney mentioned how hisWhiscash, Whisko, had sensed multiple earthquakes happening in Sootopolis.

AfterTeam Aqua andTeam Magma awakenedGroudon andKyogre at theSeafloor Cavern, the twoLegendary Pokémon confronted each other in Sootopolis City inThe Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XII, where they began a fierce battle with each other. In order to prevent the immense energy resulted by the battle from going out of control,Steven,Wallace, and theElite Four used thelegendary giants'Superpower to contain the energy in Sootopolis City. Due to the containment field created by the giants covering the city everywhere above it, the excess energy from the battle was forced downwards, causing the entire city to rise into the air. InIt All Ends Now IV, the battle was stopped byRuby andRayquaza, bringing the city back down to its proper place.

However, as Groudon and Kyogre headed to their sleeping grounds, it turned out that the stress of controlling the legendary giants had caused Steven to die, while the same soon also happened toNorman, due to him having controlled Rayquaza, causing the Legendary Pokémon to escape. InIt All Ends Now V,Archie andMaxie emerged from theCave of Origin and stole theRed andBlue Orbs from Ruby, intending to restart the crisis. InIt All Ends Now VI, Wallace, who had recently inherited Steven'sChampion title, arrived to fight Archie and Maxie, but he was forced to surrender when they tookWinona, his beloved, as a hostage. InIt All Ends Now VIII, Ruby and Sapphire started battling against thevillainous team leaders, who soon decided to retreat. TheTrick Master, along withPlusle andMinun, was able to stop them from escaping, after which Ruby used his previously unrevealed sixth Pokémon,Celebi, to swipe the Orbs and destroy them. Celebi subsequentlytransported Ruby and Sapphire to a slightly alternate future, reviving those who had died during the final battle.

After peace had returned toHoenn,Giovanni was seen picking up the shattered remains of the Orbs while accompanied by histhreenewunderlings, revealing that the formed gemstones were, in fact, the Orbs'trueforms, which he intended to use inhis newest plan.

Sootopolis City in theOmega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

InBeedrill Prepares, it was revealed thatBlaise had witnessed Giovanni and his underlings picking up the remains of the Orbs, but he had been paralyzed by fear in Giovanni's presence, preventing him from doing anything until he had left.

InPS615,Zinnia was taken to Sootopolis after Rayquaza rejected her offer to join her in order to destroy themeteoroid headed for Hoenn. This rejection almost caused Zinnia to lose all hope, butEmerald managed to convince her to work alongsideMr. Stone and Steven for a solution to avert the impending apocalypse. Eventually a plan was devised, which involved the HoennGym Leaders, Elite Four, andFrontier Brains, as well as theDraconids,Red, andGreen, all standing by at Sootopolis to launch a combined attack towards the meteoroid, while Ruby andSapphire would ride Rayquaza into space to strike the meteoroid directly withDragon Ascent. The plan was executed successfully, saving the Hoenn region from yet another disaster, despite the unexpected emergence of aDeoxys from within the meteoroid upon its destruction. Upon Deoxys's emergence, Giovanni, who had come to Sootopolis to help stop the meteoroid, identified the Deoxys asOrganism No. 1, a specimen thatTeam Rocket had previously disposed of after it had outlived its usefulness to them.
