Solar Beam (Japanese:ソーラービームSolar Beam), formatted asSolarBeam prior toPokémon X and Y, is a damage-dealingGrass-typemove introduced inGeneration I.

It is:

Contents

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:Is the power of Solar Beam affected byshadowy aura (like it is by rain, hail and sandstorm)?
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

Generation I

SolarBeam does nothing on the turn it is selected, other than state that the user has taken in sunlight. On the following turn, SolarBeam will inflict damage, PP will be deducted from it, and it will count as the last move used. Once SolarBeam is selected, the user will not be able to switch out until it is disrupted or fully executed.

If SolarBeam is not fully executed, PP will not be deducted from it, and it will not count as the last move used. If the target usesMirror Move during the turn that the user takes in sunlight, Mirror Move will copy the move that the user executed immediately before using SolarBeam (or fail if it can't).

Sleep, freezing, binding, andflinching will pause, but not disrupt, the duration of SolarBeam.

InPokémon Stadium,Mirror Move will copy SolarBeam on either of the turns it takes to execute.

Generation II

SolarBeam will not need a turn to charge if used duringharsh sunlight. It will have itspower halved if used duringrain.

If the user is prevented from attacking with SolarBeam during harsh sunlight by conditions such asflinching, paralysis, andconfusion, then PP will still be deducted regardless, due to the fact that SolarBeam was designed as a two-turn attack.

If SolarBeam is disrupted from succeeding due to conditions such as flinching, paralysis, or confusion, the entire move will now be cancelled rather than simply paused.

Generations III and IV

SolarBeam will also have its power halved if used duringhail, fog or when asandstorm is raging.

If a Pokémon holding aPower Herb uses SolarBeam, it will consume the Power Herb to execute SolarBeam in one turn. If there isharsh sunlight, the Power Herb will not be consumed.

SolarBeam can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 4 bonus appeal points ifGrowth orSunny Day was used in the previous turn.

Generations V and VI

A minor change shows the charging half of SolarBeam's animation happening even if it is sunny, where previously it did not. The actual attack will happen immediately after.

Strong winds have no effect on Solar Beam's power.

Solar Beam can also be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points ifSunny Day was used in the prior turn.

Generation VII

InPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Solar Beam's power was increased from 120 to 200.

Generation VIII onwards

Solar Beam's power was changed back to 120.

The user gains theSolar Beam status condition on the first turn, and unleashes the move on the next turn. In Sunny weather or in Extremely Harsh Sunlight, the move will skip its charging phase and fire immediately. Its damage will be reduced in Rain, Heavy Rain, Hail, or a Sandstorm.

In theRescue Team,Explorers, andAdventure Squad series, the move's damage is doubled at the end of damage calculation. This damage modifier will not occur in Rain, Hail, or a Sandstorm (effectively halving the damage dealt).

Being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked. Solar Beam cannot be used in aPokémon Tower in theAdventure Squad series.
