Smack Down (Japanese:うちおとすKnock Down) is a damage-dealingRock-typemove introduced inGeneration V. It wasTM23 from Generation V toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and isTM179 inPokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Effect

Smack Down inflicts damage andgrounds the target if it was ungrounded.

Specifically, if the target isFlying-type, has the AbilityLevitate, or is under the effect ofMagnet Rise orTelekinesis, Smack Down applies its effect to that Pokémon, causing that target to becomegrounded (vulnerable toGround-type moves and affected byterrain andArena Trap) until that target switches out. Smack Down also removes the effects ofMagnet Rise andTelekinesis. The effect of Smack Down is not applied if it hits the target'ssubstitute or if the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn ofSky Drop, holds anIron Ball, or is under the effect ofGravity orIngrain.

Magnet Rise fails if used by a Pokémon under the effect of Smack Down; the moveTelekinesis cannot affect a Pokémon under the effect of Smack Down. The Air Balloon does not apply if the Pokémon is under the effect of Smack Down.

Smack Down can hit Pokémon during the semi-invulnerable turns ofFly,Bounce, andSky Drop. If it hits a Pokémon that is using Fly or Bounce, it will knock it down, cancelling the move; if it hits a Pokémon using or affected by Sky Drop, it will not be knocked down. A Pokémon under the effect of Smack Down can still use these moves on subsequent turns.

Smack Down can also be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination with the user gaining an extra three appeal points if any of the movesEntrainment,Hold Hands orPlay Nice was used in the prior turn.

Smack Down inflicts damage. If the enemy isFlying-type, has the AbilityLevitate, or is under the effect ofMagnet Rise orTelekinesis, it will begrounded, which allowsGround-type moves to hit it. The enemy will also be unable to move in the air (for example, unable to move over water tiles). This move can also hit enemies during the semi-invulnerable turns ofFly,Bounce, andSky Drop. The grounded status condition lasts for 10 turns.
