Sleep Talk (Japanese:ねごとSleep Talk) is a non-damagingNormal-typemove introduced inGeneration II.

It is:

Effect

If the user is currentlyasleep, then it will automatically use a randomly selectedmove from its moveset. Sleep Talk will not select itself or any of theunselectable moves listed below. Sleep Talk will fail if the user is not asleep, or if the user does not know any moves other than Sleep Talk or the unselectable moves.

A Pokémon with the AbilityComatose is also treated as an asleep Pokémon, and can successfully use Sleep Talk (orSnore) without having this status condition.

InDouble andTriple Battles, because of the inability to select a target, the chosen move will always hit a random opponent.

Sleep Talk can call a move blocked byDisable,Gravity,Heal Block,Imprison,Taunt,Throat Chop, orTorment, by the AbilityCursed Body, or by the user's heldAssault Vest

Because Sleep Talk has normal movepriority, a move with higher or lower priority may not be executed when it normally would. For instance, Sleep Talk may causeQuick Attack to be used after a normal priority move orVital Throw to be used before a normal priority move.

Generation II

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:How Sleep Talk works if the Pokémon is affected by Encore in this generation?
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

PP will be deducted from Sleep Talk only, which means that it can be used to execute moves that have no PP left.

If Sleep Talk callsRest, and the user does not have full HP, the user will use Rest, regain HP, and reset its sleep counter.

If Sleep Talk callsMetronome orMirror Move (which are selectable by Sleep Talk only in this generation) and thus in turn calls a two-turn move, the move will fail.

Generation III

Sleep Talk can call a move with noPP remaining, but will fail to execute it due to a lack of PP.

When using Sleep Talk while holding achoice item or under the effect ofEncore, the first use will work normally, but all subsequent uses will always fail, even if the user only has one move other than Sleep Talk.

IfRest is called by Sleep Talk it will automatically fail.

If Sleep Talk orSnore is used at least once consecutively in the turns right before switching out, the Pokémon will sleep for the same amount of turns as were remaining prior to the usage of those two moves when switched back in.

Sleep Talk can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 3 bonus appeal points ifRest was used in the previous turn.

Generation IV

Sleep Talk can call and successfully execute a move with noPP remaining.

Turns where Sleep Talk is used are always counted towards waking the Pokémon.

Generation V onwards

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason:Sleep Talk now works normally even under the effect of Encore?
You candiscuss this on the talk page.

Sleep Talk now works multiple times if used while holding a choice item.

Sleep Talk can also be used as part of aContest Spectacular combination, with the user gaining an extra three appeal points ifRest was used in the prior turn.

If powered up by aNormalium Z into Z-Sleep Talk, the user'scritical hit rate increases by two stages. Additionally, the copied move will become its correspondingZ-Move. If the copied move is astatus move, it will not receive its Z-Power effect.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

When the user is asleep, Sleep Talk will use a randomly selected move from its moveset. In theRescue Team andExplorers series, the move will automatically be used if the Pokémon is asleep and attacked. When triggered, the user will face in the attacker's direction and use one of its moves (including itself, in which case it will fail). Any links the selected move has are ignored. Sleep Talk is unaffected by thecowering andcringing status conditions, but is affected by theMuzzled status condition. This move will be picked only if the user does not haveSnore in their moveset. This move is counted as Pokémon's most recent move only if it was used manually.

InSuper Mystery Dungeon, Sleep Talk is now automatically triggered when the user is asleep and an enemy is adjacent to the user. It can no longer select itself. If both Sleep Talk and Snore are available in the Pokémon's moveset, the move which is listed first will be selected.
