Shuppet is a spherical, levitatingPokémon that appears to be covered by a gray cloth. Black rings surround its multicolored eyes, which have light-blue sclerae, dark-blue irises, and yellow pupils. Occasionally, it will display a large, pink tongue. Extending from the top of its head is a long, pointed horn.
The horn collects the negative emotions of people, on which this Pokémon feeds. The emotions it feeds on include anger, jealousy, resentment, and malice, so some people are grateful for its presence. This also helps Shuppet become slowly stronger. A nocturnal Pokémon, Shuppet will appear in swarms beneath the eaves of houses with negative people. As such, there exists a proverb that says, “Shun the house where Shuppet gather in the growing dusk”. It is most commonly foundin cities and other urban settings and will retreat to the nest in which it lives when the sun rises. As mentioned in theSleep Style Dex, a Shuppet sleeping near the sleeping person will eat up their dark feelings. As a result, the person will wake up in the morning with their mood improved.
Shuppet is attracted by feelings of jealousy and vindictiveness. If someone develops strong feelings of vengeance, thisPokémon will appear in a swarm and line up beneath the eaves of that person's home.
Shuppet grows by feeding on dark emotions, such as vengefulness and envy, in the hearts of people. It roams through cities in search of grudges that taint people.

Shuppet debuted inTake This House and Shuppet.Max got lost in an abandoned mansion and befriended a Shuppet that was living there. Max allowed Shuppet to pull pranks to scare the others because he was angry withMay.
InFear Factor Phony, a Shuppet was living at an abandoned mining colony with other Ghost-type Pokémon. They could not stand the partyingPsychic-type Pokémon in the nearby town, so they created aHaunter-like illusion to scare them away.
Shuppet can be seen as a parallel toDuskull. Both areGeneration IIIGhost-type Pokémon. Both evolve into their evolved forms starting at level 37. Both also have the same base stat total.
However, with the introduction ofDusknoir inGeneration IV andMega Banette inGeneration VI, the similarities between the two evolutionary lines have become less notable, as Dusknoir has not received a Mega Evolution and Banette cannot evolve further.
Shuppet appears to be based on a puppet or doll, possibly a commonhand puppet or a てるてる坊主teru teru bōzu, a Japanese paper doll resembling aghost. It also appears similar to common depictions of ghosts, specifically those that resemble floating cloths with faces.
Name origin
Shuppet may be a combination ofshadow orsheet andpuppet, or a contraction ofshadow puppet.
Kagebouzu may be a combination of 影kage (shadow) or 影法師kagebōshi (silhouette) and てるてる坊主teru teru bōzu.
