Shigeru Miyamoto (宮本茂, born November 16, 1952) is a world-famous video game designer and creator, known as the man behind two ofNintendo's most well-known franchises,Super Mario andThe Legend of Zelda. He has worked on hundreds of games since joining Nintendo, including being behind the initial development of thePokémon games.

WhileSatoshi Tajiri had created the idea forCapsule Monsters with longtime friendKen Sugimori, when the idea for the game was pitched to Nintendo it was rejected initially. Miyamoto, however, took interest in the idea, and over the next five years,Game Freak, alongsideCreatures, Inc., another Nintendo developer, created the first Pokémon games,Pokémon Red and Green.

Miyamoto's vision for the series was a phenomenal influence, with the idea ofpaired versions featuringversion-exclusive Pokémon being his own.[1][2] Rather than have a single game, to emphasize thetrading aspects, players would have to link up with a friend to achieve the ultimate goal ofcatching them all. For this, themain rival of theGeneration I games andtheir remakes has "Shigeru" on his list of default names, while hisanimated series counterpart is directly named "Shigeru" in Japanese, in Miyamoto's honor.
