TheSevii Islands (Japanese:ナナシマNanashima) are an archipelago accessible from theKantoregion.

In the core series games

The Sevii Islands consist of nine large islands and several small islands surrounding them. They are located far south of the Kanto mainland, and are home to severalLegendary andMythical Pokémon:Moltres,Lugia,Ho-Oh, andDeoxys.

The Sevii Islands provide most of the post-Pokémon League plot inPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The Sevii Islands sideplot actually begins as soon as theplayer has defeated theCinnabar Gym and obtained theVolcano Badge. The first three islands,One,Two, andThree, are the only ones that are initially accessible, but the plot here is important for continuing the game. By obtaining theNational Pokédex (and subsequently retrieving theRuby), the later islands are unlocked.

Some of the Sevii Islands' background music tracks are remixed themes fromPokémon Gold and Silver, specifically the ones fromViolet City/Olivine City (Six Island andSeven Island),Azalea Town/Blackthorn City (Four Island andFive Island), andRoutes42,43,44, and theLake of Rage (routes onFive,Six, andSeven Islands).

The main islands' only game appearance was inPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, but the two event-exclusive islands,Navel Rock andBirth Island, later reappeared inPokémon Emerald. The Sevii Islands also appear in other media based on these games.

There is also a plot byTeam Rocket based in the Sevii Islands. It deals with PokémonEvolution, and appears to be the prelude to a plot that islaunched three years later. Only when the Team Rocket members realize that the player has already defeated Giovanni, who subsequently disbanded Team Rocket, do they give up.

Accessibility

In FireRed and LeafGreen, the Sevii Islands are accessible fromVermilion Harbor via a system of boats called theSeagallop Ferries. To be able to accessOne,Two, andThree Islands, one needs aTri-Pass, received fromCelio after defeatingBlaine onCinnabar Island. To be able to accessFour,Five,Six, andSeven Islands, one needs aRainbow Pass, received fromCelio inOne Island, after entering theHall of Fame and obtaining theNational Pokédex. To be able to accessNavel Rock, one needs aMysticTicket, and to be able to accessBirth Island, one needs anAuroraTicket, both of which can be obtained promotionally withMystery Gift.

Geography

Demographics

The population of Sevii Islands is 212, including all towns and other areas.

Notable locations

The nine Sevii Islands are a part of the Kanto region, located to the south of mainland Kanto. These islands cannot be surfed to; to travel from island to island a Pokémon Trainer must take theSeagallop Ferries from another island orVermilion City inKanto.

Settlements

The seven major islands each have a settlement, which are named numerically.

Relation with Kanto

Official sources are inconsistent as to whether the Sevii Islands are part of the Kanto region.

InPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the in-game dialogue suggests that the Sevii Islands are separate from Kanto. For example:

  • Bill says atOne Island: "We should head back toKanto."
  • Lostelle's uncle says atTwo Island'sJoyful Game Corner: "I can't tell you how grateful I am for your rescue ofLostelle. Thanks to your feat, the people ofThree Island have changed their attitudes aboutKanto people. And, I'm fromKanto, you see. The people ofThree Island helped me add to my merchandise."
  • TheNetwork Machine at One Island: "Link established withKanto region." or "Link established withKanto andHoenn regions."

On the official Japanese Pokémon site, on a page describing the setting of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the Sevii Islands are consistently described as being outside of the Kanto region.[1]

On the official Japanese "Pokémon World Climate" website, on the page about the Kanto region, it is mentioned that despite their different climate, the Sevii Islands are still part of the Kanto region.[2]

Pokémon the Series

Pokémon Chronicles

The Sevii Islands have only been featured inThe Search for the Legend, whereRitchie visitedMt. Ember (referred to as Mt. Magma in thedub) onOne Island. The episode focused on theMoltres living on the mountain.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

The Sevii Islands also appear in the animated series map released withThe Rise of Darkrai.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

In this manga, the Sevii Islands are unambiguously located outsideKanto, as the characters are sometimes seen travelling between Kanto and the Sevii Islands.

FireRed & LeafGreen arc

The Sevii Islands were the main setting for this arc. It focused on the three original KantoPokédex holders dealing withDeoxys, based on theBirth Island event, as well as the resurgence ofTeam Rocket.

Trivia

  • Data in the games reserved forlocation name index pointers reveal the following values:
    • Sevii Isle 6 (Japanese: 6ばんななしまNanashima 6)
    • Sevii Isle 7 (Japanese: 7ばんななしまNanashima 7)
    • Sevii Isle 8 (Japanese: 8ばんななしまNanashima 8)
    • Sevii Isle 9 (Japanese: 9ばんななしまNanashima 9)
    • Sevii Isle 22 (Japanese: 22ばんななしまNanashima 22)
    • Sevii Isle 23 (Japanese: 23ばんななしまNanashima 23)
    • Sevii Isle 24 (Japanese: 24ばんななしまNanashima 24)
  • Theroutes on the Sevii Islands are not numbered, unlike the otherregions. This is likely to prevent confusion as to their relation to the others, as continuing whereJohto left off (afterRoute 46, at the time the highest-numbered Johto route) would seemingly imply that Johto is accessible in the games.

Origin

The Sevii Islands archipelago corresponds to the real-lifeIzu Islands andBonin Islands. One through Four Island as well as Navel Rock are based on the Izu Islands, while Five, Six and Seven Island correspond toMuko-jima,Chichijima andHahajima in the Bonin, and Birth Island corresponds toMinami-Tori-shima (an island grouped administratively with the Bonin Islands, but not considered to be a part of them geographically).

Name origin

The name possibly combines the numberseven and the Roman numeral for seven,VII. The Japanese nameNanashima literally means "seven islands". According to an old woman onSeven Island, they were named the Sevii Islands not because there are seven (two event items reveal there are in fact nine), but because they were supposedly made in seven days.
