Reflect (Japanese:リフレクターReflector) is a non-damagingPsychic-typemove introduced inGeneration I.
It is:
- TM33 in Generation I, fromGeneration III toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, andPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
- TM09 inPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
- TM18 inPokémon Sword and Shield.
- TM074 inGeneration IX.
It is the physical counterpart toLight Screen.
Effect
Generation I
Reflect doubles the user'sDefense when the opponent damages the user with aphysical move.
Reflect will fail if the user is already under its effect. The effect of Reflect is ignored by self-inflicted confusion damage andcritical hits. If Reflect causes the user's defense to reach 1024 or higher at any time during battle calculations, it will be reducedmod 1024.
The effects of Reflect can be lifted byHaze.
If the opponent has Reflect, this lowers the user'sconfusion damage.
Generation II
Reflect now remains in effect for five turns and will double the Defense of any Pokémon on the user's side of the field instead.
Haze can no longer lift the effects of Reflect.
Confusion damage is now affected by the user's Reflect and not the opponent's.
Generation III
Instead of doubling the Defense of affected Pokémon, Reflect now technically halves the damage done to them byphysical moves; it still does not reduce damage done bymoves that deal direct damage.
If multiple Pokémon are present on the user's side of the field, all of them are protected by Reflect, but physical damage is only reduced by a third rather than half.
Reflect is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if an opponent usesBrick Break orShadow Shed on it (even if it is immune to Brick Break due to beingGhost-type), unless it isprotected from the move or the move misses.
Reflect no longer affects confusion damage.
Reflect can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point ifCalm Mind was used in the previous turn.
Generation IV
Reflect is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if a Pokémon usesBrick Break orDefog on its partner (even if it is immune to Brick Break due to beingGhost-type), unless it isprotected from the move or the move misses.
IfLight Clay is held when Reflect is used, it will extend the duration of Reflect from 5 to 8 turns.
Generation V onwards
Reflect is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if it is hit byBrick Break,Defog,Psychic Fangs, orRaging Bull, or if a Pokémon withScreen Cleaner is sent out. Reflect is not removed if the target is immune to the move (e.g. a Ghost-type Pokémon targeted by Brick Break). Pokémon with the AbilityInfiltrator ignore the effects of Reflect when attacking.
Unlike Generations III and IV, Reflect now always reduces damage by (roughly) a third rather than a half (specifically, with a multiplier of 2703/4096 inGeneration V, or 2732/4096 inGeneration VI onward) inDouble Battles andTriple Battles, regardless of how many Pokémon on a given side are being protected by it. InGeneration VII,Battle Royals also use this multiplier.
If powered up by aPsychium Z into Z-Reflect, the user'sDefense stat rises by one stage.
UsingBaddy Bad will set up Reflect on the user's side of the field.

Trivia

- In at least the first two generations, the message that appears when this move is used was changed in the English localization.
- Generation I:
- Japanese: <user>は だげきこうげきに つよくなった!<user> became stronger against damaging attacks!
- English: <user> gained armor!
- Generation II:
- Japanese: <user>は リフレクターで だげきこうげきに つよくなった!<user>'s Reflector made it stronger against damaging attacks!
- English: <user>'s DEFENSE rose!
- Generation I:
- Since Reflect regained its status asTM move inGeneration III onwards, severalGeneration I Pokémon are unable to learn Reflect anymore viaTM33, unlike inGeneration I games. This makes Reflect a TM move with the highest number of Pokémon compatibility lost between any generations.
- Reflect displays animation when it ends on its own inPokémon Battle Revolution.
- InGeneration II games, when performing a modified version of theCelebi Egg glitch, if the both parents have Reflect in their fourth attack slot, the Pokémon produced will be holding aTeru-sama (inGold and Silver Versions) or aGS Ball (inCrystal Version). If theTeru-sama is traded to Crystal, it becomes aGS Ball. When viewed inPokémon Stadium 2, theTeru-sama shows up as aGS Ball.
- Despite having distinct effects in the games, Reflect,Light Screen,Barrier,Protect, andSafeguard are often depicted in the animated series seemingly sharing the same effect that Protect has in the games (protecting the user from most the effect of moves).
