Ralts (Japanese:ラルトスRalts) is a dual-typePsychic/FairyPokémon introduced inGeneration III. Prior toGeneration VI, it was a purePsychic-type Pokémon.

Itevolves intoKirlia starting atlevel 20, which evolves intoGardevoir starting at level 30 or, if male,Gallade when exposed to aDawn Stone.

Biology

Ralts's eyes seen from below

Ralts is a humanoidPokémon with a white body. It has thin arms and legs that widen toward the feet. There is a wispy extension trailing off the back of its feet, creating the overall impression of a nightgown or oversized dress. Most of its face is covered by green hair that resembles abowl cut, but a pair of pinkish-red eyes is sometimes visible. There are two flat, red horns on top of its head: a large one toward the front and a smaller one at the back.

Ralts uses the horns to read people and Pokémon's emotions. Warm feelings cause its body to warm as well, but it hides if it senses hostility. If itsTrainer is in a cheerful mood, Ralts also becomes cheerful and joyous. It is known to inhabiturban areas, but it does not normally show itself to humans. However, when it senses happy feelings, it will approach people. Ralts prefers to hang out with people of cheerful nature more than those with gloomy natures. Regardless, Ralts will show no discrimination to anyone based on age or gender. As mentioned inPokémon Sleep, when a Ralts is seen smiling in its sleep, that means something good has happened during that day.[1]

Evolution

Ralts evolves intoKirlia, which evolves into eitherGardevoir or, ifmale,Gallade.

Trivia

Origin

Ralts seems to be based on a young child and the concept ofempathy. It is common in various forms of media for shy, sensitive characters to be depicted with hair obscuring their eyes, which may explain Ralts'sbowl cut hairstyle. The shape of its legs resemble a long dress, and the red horns on its head resemble two halves of aheart, which may relate to its ability to sense emotions.

Ralts and its evolutionary line also bear a strong resemblance to themeadow elves, who were believed to possess magical powers and supernatural beauty. These beings were often ambivalent toward ordinary people, capable of either helping or hindering them. The wordelf inGermanic languages originally meant "white being," which may explain why they were often depicted wearing white tights. By the end of the medieval period, the wordelf was frequently supplanted by the French loanwordfairy, which may explain theirFairy typing starting fromGeneration VI.

Name origin

Ralts may be a partial anagram ofastral (relating to its Psychic powers). It may also involvewaltz (referring to its dancer-like evolved forms).
