TheRainbow Feather (Japanese:虹色の羽根Rainbow Feather), calledRainbow Wing prior toPokémon Scarlet and Violet, is aKey Item introduced inGeneration II. It is alegendary artifact that is associated withHo-Oh.
In the core series games
Effect
The Rainbow Wing allows theplayer to explore theBell Tower (known as Tin Tower inGeneration II) and encounter a wildHo-Oh at the top of the tower.
If the Rainbow Wing has not yet been obtained, the player will be unable to visit any floors of the tower other than 1F because:
- InPokémon Gold and Silver, aSage is seen standing on the stairs at Tin Tower 1F.
- InPokémon Crystal, there will be no stairs at Tin Tower 1F at first.
- After the player has caught the three OTLegendary beasts, the same Sage who delivers this item to the player also causes the stairs to appear. From this point onwards, the player will be able to freely explore the tower (regardless of storing this item in the Bag or the PC).
- InPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, a Sage will remain at the side of the ladder at Bell Tower 1F and prevent the player from climbing it.
- Once the player obtains this item, the Sage will allow the player to freely explore the tower.
Generation II
InGeneration II, although it is possible to store the Rainbow Wing in thePC, Ho-Oh will only appear if the Rainbow Wing is currently in theBag. If the player defeats or runs away from Ho-Oh, it will be permanently unavailable in the current game.
Generation IV
In Pokémon HeartGold, both the Rainbow Wing andClear Bell are required to summon Ho-Oh. In Pokémon SoulSilver, only the Rainbow Wing is required.
In both Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, if the player defeats or runs away from Ho-Oh, it will reappear the next time the player enters theHall of Fame.

Afterwards, they decided to accompany Jaye and Chad as they climbed theBell Tower in the hopes of summoning Ho-Oh with the Rainbow Wing.
