Professor Laventon (Japanese:ラベン博士Dr. Laven) is a travellingPokémon Professor who studies in theHisui region. He is a member of theGalaxy Team's Survey Corps and specializes inPokémon's modes of life.

In the core series games

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Professor Laventon finds theplayer onPrelude Beach after they have fallen through thespace-time rift. The appearance of the player has attracted the interest of the Professor's threefirst partner Pokémon. After the player awakens, the Pokémon run away and the Professor tasks the player with recapturing them. Impressed by their skill he takes the player toJubilife Village to recruit them into theGalaxy Team's Survey Corps.

For most of the game, Professor Laventon can be found at allbase camps or his laboratory inGalaxy Hall. The player can report their latest survey results by speaking to Laventon, which entails any Pokémon caught andresearch tasks completed since the last report. He will then reward the player withmoney andresearch points based on these results.

ThePokédex entries in Pokémon Legends: Arceus are written by Laventon. Incidentally, he coined the term "scalchop" forOshawott's signature seashell and the term "aura" forLucario's signature energy wave control power. Laventon also observed thatUnown resemble human writing from other lands, though no one takes him seriously.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Professor Laventon makes a cameo inPokémon Scarlet and Violet. During Ms.Raifort's history classes, a photo of Laventon appears on the classroom board as part of a timeline on thehistory and development of the Poké Ball.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Professor Laventon makes a cameo inPokémon Legends: Z-A, where he is portrayed in an old painting in an office building inLumiose City. He is also mentioned several times in theLumiose Museum.

Professor Laventon was introduced as aSupporter card in thePokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sword & Shield Series (the Japanese Sword & Shield Era). It was first released in the JapaneseS-P Promotional cards and the EnglishSilver Tempest expansion, with artwork byKen Sugimori. It allows the player to put up to three Pokémon that have "Hisuian" in their names from their discard pile into their hand.

Trivia

  • As the Galaxy Expedition Team consists of foreigners to Hisui, Laventon is the only knownPokémon Professor in thecore series not to be from the region he resides in.
    • There are several hints in the game that Professor Laventon may be from theGalar region:
      • In thePokédex entry forRaichu, he mentionsCopperajah that live in his homeland, with Galar being the only region where they can be encountered that had been revealed as of the release of the game.
      • The writing on the blackboard in his office uses the alphabet fromPokémon Sword and Shield instead of the style of writing used elsewhere in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
      • He often uses stock British phrases such as "jolly good". In other versions of the game, such as the Japanese and German versions, he will sometimes speak in English instead.
  • Professor Laventon's drawings that he made for his Pokédex are on display at theLumiose Museum inPokémon Legends: Z-A. The description for the display states that his original Pokédex was thought lost until it was found in a shed in theSinnoh region.
    • In the same game, an old portrait of Laventon is hanging in theOld Building.
