Many assistants are shown throughout thecore series, first debuting inGeneration I. InGenerations I andII many of the professor's assistants appear throughout the game, providing the player withitems and feed back on progress on theirPokédex on behalf of the professor. These assistants went without names and were simply just researchers who helped the professor. While these types of professors remained throughout the core series, starting inPokémon Ruby and Sapphire, many assistants became notable characters that the player will interact with more frequently. Starting inGeneration IV, theplayer themselves may associate themselves with the professor and help with certain tasks that may involve research.
ThePokémon Legends sub set of games directly has the player involve being a research assistant forMable andProfessor Laventon, having them actively look into the Pokémon by either catching or battling with them.
