History
Background

Prism Tower was built at least 2,000 years ago and is the oldest structure in Lumiose City, predating even the city itself.[1] Hidden within the center of the tower isAnge, a device containing Mega Power created byAZ to grant eternal life. The tower itself would be remodeled and renovated a few times afterward,[2] eventually serving as the structure of the present-day Prism Tower.
Pokémon X and Y
In the modern day, Prism Tower is a major tourist attraction of Lumiose City. InPokémon X and Y, the tower housedGym forLumiose City, known as theLumiose City Gym. The Gym was led byClemont, who also designed and created Prism Tower's lighting system.
The Lumiose City Gym is initially inaccessible when the player first reaches Lumiose City in Pokémon X and Y, as it and much of the rest of the city have lost power due to a blackout. After theplayer has defeated Team Flare in theKalos Power Plant, power will be fully restored to the city and the player will be able to challenge the Gym.

Between X and Y and Legends: Z-A
After the activation of theultimate weapon during the events of Pokémon X and Y, the Ange device awoke from within Prism Tower, unleashing itsMega Power and attracting wild Pokémon in droves into Lumiose City, as well as allowing many wild Pokémon to undergoRogue Mega Evolution. Two years prior to the game's events, the companyQuasartico Inc. was first made aware of this phenomenon when they began investigating the tower for repairs and improvements, causing them to close down Prism Tower, as well as the Lumiose City Gym contained within, to the public for "renovation work".
At some point after Prism Tower was closed by Quasartico Inc., theMythical PokémonDarkrai wandered into Lumiose City and settled atop the Tower, where it got exposed to the unbridled Mega Power leaking from Ange. In turn, this caused its nightmare-generating powers to be greatly enhanced, andHyperspace Lumiose was born as the reflection of a blend of memories and dreams from people and Pokémon affected by them.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A

As the storyline of Legends: Z-A progresses, Prism Tower is gradually covered by Quasartico Inc.'s scaffolding, eventually being concealed completely. Through conversations withL andAZ, it was revealed that the only way to stop Ange is to have AZ'sEternal Flower FloetteMega Evolve and take on Ange's power. This would, in turn, unleash the power of Ange and turn it into Hyperrogue AngeFloette, using the structure of the tower as a skeleton for it. Theplayer fights Hyperrogue Ange Floette with the help ofZygarde, eventually unleashing Zygarde's true potential by Mega Evolving it into Mega Zygarde and having it eliminate Hyperrogue Ange Floette usingNihil Light.
After the destruction of Hyperrogue Ange Floette, a cleanup effort was done to remove the debris from Centrico Plaza, as well as the Quasartico Inc. scaffolding meant to contain the tower. The heavily damaged ruins of Prism Tower are left standing as is. Awild zone, numberedWild Zone 20, the largest in the game, is established within Centrico Plaza, and the plaza is reopened to the public. Some debris from Prism Tower remain scattered around the plaza.

In the DLC, a loading screen tip gives a new description of Prism Tower:
- This tower looks very different without its cladding. The day it reclaims itsformer glory will probably mark the end for one phase of Lumiose's urban redevelopment plan.
As a result of Darkrai's growing power, hyperspace distortions started appearing across the city, including a large one that leads intoHyperspace Newmoon Nightmare right above Prism Tower.

InKalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!,Ash tried to enter theLumiose Gym within Prism Tower as his firstGym upon arriving inKalos, but he andPikachu were ejected out of the tower byClembot for not having anyBadges from the Kalos region.
The tower was featured heavily inLumiose City Pursuit!, asProfessor Sycamore's rampagingGarchomp climbed it. Ash went up after her to calm her down, but she still caused a fair bit of damage to the tower, to the point where parts were too weak to support even Pikachu's weight.
InKalos League Passion with a Certain Flare!, while Prism Tower was closed during theLumiose Conference,Xerosic and other members ofTeam Flare took over the tower as their base in order to controlZygarde. InDown to the Fiery Finish!, underLysandre's orders, Team Flare used a device to transformZygarde CoreZ2 into its 50% Forme and control it to unleash giant roots that destroy much of Lumiose City, including parts of Prism Tower.
InA Towering Takeover!, after Ash andhis Pokémon had been captured by Team Flare,Lysandre had both them and Alain brought to the top of Prism Tower, where he told Alain about his true intentions of changing the world. Upon learning the truth that he had unknowingly been helping Team Flare in fulfilling their plans, Alain was shocked and devastated. Lysandre then attempted to take control of Ash and hisGreninja in order to use theirBond Phenomenon for his own purposes, but Ash defied him, breaking free of the binds he had been confined with. Alain proceeded to help freeing Ash's Pokémon, having finally understood that Lysandre needed to be stopped. The two Trainers then began battling against the Team Flare Boss, with all of Ash's Pokémon andAlain's Mega Charizard X facing againstLysandre's Pyroar andShinyMegaGyarados.
Meanwhile,Clemont and Clembot attempted to take back their Gym from below. InThe Right Hero for the Right Job!, Clemont and Clembot managed to enter the Gym and encounter Xerosic; while Clemont and Xerosic battle, Clembot used the distraction to hack into Xerosic's machine and eject him out of the Gym using one of the installed trap doors. Clemont and Clembot managed to shut down the machine controlling Z2, though not without Clembot's sacrifice, as it is destroyed in the process. At the same time,Malva interrupted Ash and Alain's battle with Lysandre, stating that she opposes Lysandre's plan to destroy the world. InRocking Kalos Defenses!, Ash and Alain finally managed to defeat Lysandre and break both Z2 andSquishy from his control, but Lysandre, unyielding, chose to retreat by jumping off the tower. The heroes subsequently left Prism Tower in order to help stop theGiant Rock, a secret backup weapon Lysandre had prepared.
InBattling with a Clean Slate!, many parts of Lumiose City and Prism Tower were under repairs after the Team Flare incident. Prism Tower was later reopened with a relighting ceremony witnessed by all the citizens.

Prism Tower debuted inPangoro Poses a Problem, where it is shown that Pokémon are kept at the tower to provide electricity.Alexa visited the tower in order to have an interview withProfessor Sycamore there about the incident withXerneas andYveltal inVaniville Town in preparation for an article of the subject. Once she arrived at the tower, she was surprised to find out that her boss, theLumiose Press editor-in-chief, was there as well, aware of the fact that both Sycamore and Alexa knew the truth about the incident, which the media had covered up with a fake tale of an unexplained explosion. After the editor-in-chief had driven Professor Sycamore away with the excuse of him being a busy man and having interviewed him himself, he revealed his association withTeam Flare by promptly burning Alexa's article materials to ashes. He then sent out hisPangoro to kill Alexa, but luckilyX and his friends arrived just in time to save the reporter lady. As the editor-in-chief had taken Alexa'sHelioptile as a hostage, X stayed behind to battle him whileY,Shauna,Tierno, andTrevor helped Alexa to escape.
X soon found out that, even though he had hisKanga and Li'l Kanga attack Pangorotogether in theirMega Evolved state, theDaunting Pokémon had no effort in dodging all of their attacks. WithSalamè andMarisso being distracted by the editor-in-chief's twoSpewpa'sRage Powder, X's hopes of winning looked non-existent. However, once the two Spewpa had been beaten, X was able to use Salamè's tail flame to burn the leaf in Pangoro's mouth, which had allowed it to sense and dodge incoming attacks. With this advantage gone, Kanga and Li'l Kanga were able to defeat Pangoro. As one of the attacks during the battle had made a hole in the wall, Alexa's Helioptile was able to recharge itself with sunlight, promptly shocking the editor-in-chief into unconsciousness and freeing itself in the process.
After the incident,Bonnie, whomClemont had left in charge of the Lumiose City Gym at Prism Tower while being away, noticed the damages the battle had caused, and realized thatone of the 25 Pokémon that had been producing electricity for the tower was missing.

Origin
Prism Tower is based on theEiffel Tower,[3][4] a lattice tower and the tallest structure in the city ofParis (whichLumiose City is based on). According toJunichi Masuda in his former LINE Blog, he requested the designer of Prism Tower to design it with the imagery of fragrance bottles as an inspiration.[4]
Its location at the center of Lumiose City likely references the position of theArc de Triomphe, another famous Parisian monument, at the center of Paris'sPlace Charles de Gaulle.
Name origin
Aprism is an optical object designed to refract light; the naming of Prism Tower alludes to Lumiose City's slogan of "The City of Light".
