History
The Poni Altar first appeared inPlay the Melody That Echoes in the Altar. The fourguardian deities ofAlola tookSun andMoon there and gave them aSun Flute and aMoon Flute, respectively. With the melody of both flutes, Sun and Moon caused the Altar to release a bright light that causedNebby and anotherCosmoem toevolve into theLegendary PokémonLunala andSolgaleo, respectively.
Shortly afterward, Moon,Gladion,Hapu, andAnabel fought against a group ofUltra Beasts that had arrived in Alola. During the clash, a largeUltra Wormhole opened up with aNecrozma's hand emerging from it. Necrozma grabbed Solgaleo, taking control of its body. The possessed Solgaleo captured Sun with its tail and dived into the wormhole while Moon and Nebby chased after them.
