Poké Ride

Poké Ride (Japanese:ポケモンライドPokémon Ride) is a custom practiced in theAlolaregion where certainPokémon are trained asRide Pokémon to help people travel or perform other tasks.
In the core series games

History

Ride Pokémon are a common means of travel in Alola and different Ride Pokémon have strengths suiting them to different tasks. Not all Ride Pokémon in Alola are a part of Poké Ride, with many Trainers using their own Pokémon for transport. An institution calledAlola Transit appears to be involved in the administration of Ride Pokémon and frequently does Alola Ride Shows, displaying the Pokémon that are frequently called. Some Ride Pokémon are trained atPaniola Ranch. Those who rideMantine are calledMantine Surfers (Japanese:マンタインサーファーMantain Surfers), an example beingGrimsley.
Anyone can summon a Ride Pokémon if they have aRide Pager (Japanese:ライドギアRide Gear) with the desired Pokémon registered to it. The Ride Pager was developed byIlima with the help of a friend. InPokémon Legends: Arceus,Professor Laventon also states howriding Pokémon inHisui resembles Ride Pokémon in Alola,[1] implying that the custom has existed for hundreds of years.
SolieraUM andDulseUS liken riding on top ofLunalaUM andSolgaleoUS to the Ride Pokémon of Alola.[2][3]
Concept art forMalie City for Sun and Moon depicts aHariyama taxi service, this service is considered to be the same one as theTauros taxi service, however Haryiama is never depicted as a form of Ride Pokémon. This would also suggest that the Tauros Charge Poké Ride was at one point considered to be a usualform of travel during the games' development. The idea of a Tauros taxi service has been adapted into thePokémon animated series.
Mechanics
InPokémon Sun, Moon,Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Ride Pokémon functionally take the place ofHM-taughtfield moves and certainKey Items—like theDowsing Machine and theBicycle—from past games, and while riding one, the encounter rate per step intall grass, or while riding acrosswater, may be reduced from the default rate on foot. The Ride Pager can be opened by pressing the Y Button once it is obtained. The player can also tap the icons by the Ride Pokémon toregister them to different directions on the Control Pad as a shortcut. It is obtained fromHala after the player passes hisgrand trial.
While riding a Ride Pokémon, the player will wear a special suit known as theRiding Wear (Japanese:ライドウェアRide Wear). The Riding Wear's appearance differs when riding on a Pokémon that travels on water. Additionally, the designs of both change between Sun and Moon, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In Sun and Moon, the Riding Wear's headgear appears to be modeled afterHawlucha. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the Riding Wear's headgear appears to be modeled afterShiny Hawlucha.
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon retains all Ride Pokémon featured in Sun and Moon, as well as introducing a new Ride Pokémon,Mantine, in the form ofMantine Surf. Unlike the other Ride Pokémon, Mantine is exclusively kept at Surf Spots rather than the specializedPoké Balls included in the Ride Pager, and are used to swim between Alola's four main islands.
