APoké Maniac (Japanese:かいじゅうマニアMonster Maniac; also known asマニアManiac inGeneration I), formattedPokémaniac in Generations I to III, is a type ofPokémon Trainer that first debuted in theGeneration I games. They were originally presented as strange boys with long hair wearing trenchcoats. InGeneration III, they were changed tocosplayers dressing up in Pokémon-like costumes. InGeneration VII, Poké Maniacs cosplay asSlowpoke and, when defeated, imitate Slowpoke with their faces. They are named for their enthusiasm for "Kaiju"-esque Pokémon,^[1] and tend to use Pokémon in theMonster Egg Group, such asLairon,Lickitung, andCharmander.

InLet's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Poké Maniacs will award threePoké Balls along withprize money upon being defeated.

Terminology

In Generations I to III, this Trainer class is referred to asPOKéMANIAC. In guidebooks, which often present these names in sentence case, it is often formatted asPokémaniac^[2][3].

From Generation IV onward, this Trainer class is namedPoké Maniac.

Notable Poké Maniacs

InGold, Silver,Crystal,HeartGold, and SoulSilver,Kirk (known as Mania inGeneration II), a Poké Maniac fromCianwood City, is well known for his arrogance. Hearing of this,Silver stole one of his two Pokémon, aSneasel. Kirk begs the player to take Shuckie, hisShuckle, for safekeeping. Depending on how well Shuckie is treated, Kirk may or may not ask for Shuckie to be given back.

Aside from the Trainer class, the termPoké Maniac (Japanese:ポケモンマニアPokémon Maniac) has also been used to refer to people that are deeply interested in rare Pokémon, most notablyBill and his father. However, in original Japanese version, this term is different from the class and does not carry the implication of liking Kaiju-like Pokémon. Probably for this reason, Bill's title was re-translated toPokémon fanatic in the English version ofPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
