Theplayer character[1] (Japanese:主人公protagonist) is the central character in the plot of mostPokémon games. They are also referred to as themain character[2][3][4][5][6] orprotagonist[4] and previously, thehero/heroine.[7][2][8][9][10] The player character is an avatar that represents the real player in the world of the game, and they are characterized by rarely speaking outside of occasional short dialogue options.
In the core series games
In thecore series games, the player characters arePokémon Trainers beginning theirPokémon journey. They usually start their journey in theirhometown by getting afirst partner Pokémon, a Pokémon that appears very early in their nativeregion'sPokédex, and is usually of theGrass-,Fire-, orWater-type. The region's residentPokémon Professor will usually be the one to give them this, as well as a Pokédex. Starting inPokémon Crystal, players can also choose their character's gender. Usually, they haverivals who begin their journey at about the same time. Players take part in several events, and meet a great number of Pokémon and people during their adventure. A common target is to conquer aPokémon League's eightGym Leaders andElite Four, and become theChampion. Several additional side quests occur during and after each game's main plot.
To date, only one player character has reappeared from an older generation in a role other than that of the player. InGeneration II and theGeneration IV remakes, whenEthan orKris/Lyra travels toMt. Silver and reaches the deepest point of the cave,Red is found, utterly silent as he was under the player's control. At the time of these games' respective releases,Red's Pikachu was the highest-leveled Pokémon owned by an in-game Trainer (Barry's fully evolved first partner Pokémon temporarily surpassed the standard set in Gold and Silver until the release of their remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver). Red reappeared inPokémon Black 2 and White 2 in theChampions Tournament of thePokémon World Tournament, in theAlola-basedGeneration VII games as the leader of theBattle Tree withBlue, and inPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! as the highest-level Trainer in the game, who presents himself to the player once they've defeated enoughMaster Trainers.
The player character can be named in all core series games at the beginning of the game using the same interface as that for enteringnicknames for Pokémon. FromGeneration I throughGeneration V, the player name character limit was five in Japanese and Korean and seven in Western languages. FromGeneration VI onward, the character limit was increased to six in Japanese and Korean and 12 in Western languages.
The following is every player character in the core series games. Note that while these characters are usually identified as either the male or female player character by fans, starting inPokémon Sun and Moon, the game will ask what the player looks like, rather than specifyinggender. The character picked will still determine certain outfit choices and pronouns, among other things.

In certain circumstances, the player is able totravel the overworld by controlling a Pokémon.

Pokémon the Series
InPokémon the Series, six of the player characters have been given major roles, four of them in episodes of theanimated series.Ash Ketchum representsRed (his game counterpart), being based on him in appearance as well as basic history (Ritchie, by extension of resembling Ash, also resembles Red, although his basic history is unknown).
At the beginning ofPokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire,May was introduced in order to better representGeneration III, as bothMisty andBrock are characters who originated inGeneration I. Likewise, at the beginning ofPokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl,Dawn joined Ash to representGeneration IV. InPokémon the Series: XY,Serena joined Ash in order to representGeneration VI.
Jimmy andMarina appeared inThe Legend of Thunder! special, taking a similar role to Ash and his companions, fightingTeam Rocket members to protectLegendary Pokémon. While the protagonists ofGeneration II did not join Ash's company, these two filled the roles as the animated series counterparts toEthan andKris.
Lyra appeared in thePokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl episodeAn Egg Scramble!, and joined the group for a brief time untilBagged Then Tagged!.
Ash andhis friends have also encountered several player characters fromspin-off games.Todd Snap was the first, and a special case, as he originated in the animated series before appearing in Pokémon Snap. He joins the group for a few episodes at two points in theoriginal series: once during theKanto journey and once during theJohto journey. The others,Solana,Kellyn, andBen are allPokémon Rangers that Ash and friends assisted in rescuing and protectingPokémon.
So far,Brendan has only made a few select cameo appearances at the beginning of some of themovies, whileLucas made a cameo at the beginning ofGiratina and the Sky Warrior, where he was battling Brendan.Ethan also appears with a second counterpart at the beginning ofZoroark: Master of Illusions. Pokémon Adventures
Pokémon Adventures featurescross-canon counterparts for almost all of the player characters in thecore series games, who are usually named after one of the games they originate from.Red is based on his game counterpart, whileGreen is based on theunnamed female character who appears inPokémon Red and Green's official strategy guide. AfterLeaf was introduced inPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Green changed into Leaf's clothes to serve as her counterpart.Gold is based on the then-unnamed player characterEthan. OncePokémon Crystal was released and introduced a female player character,Kris,Crystal was introduced to be her counterpart. Additionally, thoughLyra is usually accepted as a different character from Kris, Crystal has appeared wearing Lyra's clothes to serve as her counterpart, rather than introducing a secondJohto female protagonist for theHeartGold & SoulSilver arc.
Since having both a male and female player character became a staple for the series from then on, most player characters have been adapted intoPokédex holders who are named after the first two paired games in ageneration, with the male player character being named after the first game of the pair and the female player character being named after the second game of the pair. For example,Ruby is a counterpart toBrendan andSapphire is a counterpart toMay, the protagonists ofPokémon Ruby and Sapphire. The one exception to this isLucas andDawn, the player characters of theSinnoh-based games.Diamond is a counterpart to Lucas, but the namePearl was given toBarry's counterpart. Dawn's counterpart goes deliberately unnamed for the first few volumes of theDiamond & Pearl arc, only being revealed inStartling Staraptor to bePlatinum, after the name of the third version was known to the public. Additionally, despite not being introduced in the first paired games of a generation,Nate andRosa received counterparts in the form ofBlake andWhitley, respectively.
This pattern was broken in theScarlet & Violet arc.Florian's counterpart was namedViolet, being named after the second paired game, whileJuliana's counterpart was namedScarlet, being named after the first paired game.
A few player characters from spin-off games have appeared in Pokémon Adventures as well.Todd Snap appears as a supporting protagonist in theEmerald arc, though he is never referred to by name.Lunick andSolana star in the side story mangaPokémon Ranger the Comic: Double Mission, whileKellyn andKate star in its sequel,Pokémon Ranger: The Comic – Shadows of Almia.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters
Pokémon Pocket Monsters featurescross-canon counterparts for some of the player characters from thecore series games. However these characters usually have minor appearances in themanga, with the main focus of the series being onRed, who is based on his game counterpart fromPokémon Red and Green. Humorously duringPokémon Ruby-Sapphire, Red meets a differentRuby-Sapphire who is based on his game counterpart fromPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. This Red is depicted as a betterTrainer than the main Red. Similar toPokémon Adventures, most player characters are named after one of the games they originate from, such asEthan's counterpart being named [[Gold ({{{2}}})|Gold]]. This is not always applied asLeaf's counterpart is namedBlue; however, her Japanese name isみどり (Midori), a feminine name that means "green", likely a reference to the title of Pokémon LeafGreen, one of the games she originated from.
WhileRuby andSapphire are named similarly to their Pokémon Adventures counterparts, their Japanese names are reversed, withMay's counterpart instead being named after the first paired game, whileBrendan's counterpart is named after the second paired game.

- According to the May 2010 volume ofCoroCoro Comics and Ken Sugimori in the January 2011 volume of Nintendo Dream, the player characters ofPokémon Black and White,Hilbert andHilda, were deliberately made to be older than the player characters of previous games.[11]
- According to game scenario authorToshinobu Matsumiya, Hilda and Hilbert were initially visualized to be at the age of 16.[12]
- Most of the male characters thatAsh, the main character fromPokémon the Series, has encountered have been fromspin-off games, likePokémon Ranger. The only counterpart of a male player character from thecore series games who has met Ash isEthan, inthe thirteenth movie.
- Red's dialogue during his appearance as anNPC reflects the games' player characters' status as silent protagonists.
- The list of default names per gender generally repeats from game to game, starting in Pokémon Crystal. Exceptions to this are character-specific names, which are names unique to a character and are usually references to the title or aspects of the game.
- UntilGeneration V, the given Japanese names of the male player characters in the core series games (as NPCs) all ended inki (キ). This excludes Red's appearance in Generations II and IV, as he is not a player character during the games when he is an NPC. Inclusively, Lunick's Japanese name also ends inki.
- Despite female player characters not being introduced until the second generation, there are more female player characters than male player characters (due to both Kris and Lyra existing for the Johto region).
