Pikachu and its Pokémon friends gather for a very special event: the Mythical Pokémon Meloetta is giving a once-a-year performance at Lunatone Rock! As the full moon rises, the Melody Tree sprouts up from the stage, growing the Melody Berries that enhance Meloetta’s song. But when a battle breaks out in the audience, the Melody Berries are scattered far and wide! Can Pikachu and the others track down these special Berries so Meloetta’s show can go on—and can they find them before Meowth does?

Plot

The narrator starts explaining about the Pokémon forest.Pikachu and his friends, waiting on a cluster of plateaus in a clearing, look at the sky, eagerly awaiting something, andMeowth andWobbuffet hop up on a rock perch nearby. Suddenly, the moon begins to glow, andMeloetta appears. Meowth becomes lovestruck at the sight of it. Meloetta lands on its stage, a large plateau at the end of the clearing with a massive geode as a backdrop and large blue crystals sticking up from the sides. After the title card, Meloetta begins its concert by planting theMelody Tree and dancing around it, making the tree sproutMelody Berries and grow massively. Meloetta then begins singingRelic Song. Meowth becomes excited and startsscratching his and Wobbuffet's perch, which turns out to beCrustle. This angers it, and it usesSandstorm to send Team Rocket blasting off. The Sandstorm goes out of control, destroys the Melody Tree, and blows the Melody Berries away. Meloetta manages to catch the pink Melody Berry, but the other four are scattered into the forest. The concert has been ruined, and Meloetta is sad.

The next morning, Meloetta is slumped to its knees on the stage with the one Melody Berry it recovered, still sad about the concert. Pikachu,Oshawott,Pansage,Snivy,Emolga,Axew,Scraggy are gathered around it, and Meowth hangs back by the edge of the stage with Wobbuffet, bemoaning the situation. Meowth resolves to find the missing Melody Berries and bring them to Meloetta, hoping to cheer it up and impress it, and begins fantasizing about the love he believes it will reward him with. However, his fantasy is interrupted as he and Wobbuffet notice that Pikachu, Oshawott, Pansage, Snivy, and Emolga have already broken off from the group to do the same. As Pikachu's group splits up to start looking for the Berries in the forest, Meowth and Wobbuffet run after them in hopes of beating them to the Berries.

Pikachu, Oshawott, and Pansage find aTotodile playing jump rope with aBulbasaur'svines. Oshawott tries to go up to them and ask them about the missing Melody Berries, but trips on a rock and begins rolling head over heels, passing between them before slamming into a tree. Pikachu draws their attention from Oshawott's mishap and asks if they have seen any of the missing Melody Berries. They say they have and lead Pikachu, Oshawott, and Pansage away. Meowth and Wobbuffet sneakily tail them.

Meanwhile, Axew and Scraggy, who stayed behind with Meloetta, decide to try to cheer Meloetta up while they wait for the others. Scraggy tries using Leer for this purpose, which unsurprisingly fails. Axew, annoyed, drags him away and scolds him. Scraggy breaks out of Axew's grip and sidesteps his attempt to grab him again. Axew and Scraggy then begin pushing and hitting each other. Meloetta, apparently glad for the distraction and the excuse to perform, floats into the air, rubs its Melody Berry to make it glow, and sings to soothe their hostility and stop their fighting. Axew and Scraggy's gratitude is soon replaced with embarrassment as their stomachs growl. Meloetta hands its Berry to Axew and flies off to get them food.

Pikachu's group stops somewhere in the forest, and Totodile points up at the purple Melody Berry, glimmering from the high branches of an extremely tall tree. Pikachu, Oshawott, and Pansage celebrate. As Pikachu explains his plan to retrieve the Berry, Meowth begins scaling the tree from the other side. Pikachu runs up to the tree and begins scaling it, then uses the height to jump onto Oshawott and Totodile's combinedWater Gun and zoom up to the Berry, grabbing it right as Meowth reaches its height and is about to go out on the branch and grab it. The Water Gun launches Pikachu clear above the top of the tree, and he free falls most of the way to the ground until Bulbasaur catches him with Vine Whip. Meowth complains about being so close to snagging the Berry, inadvertently letting go of the tree as he gesticulates and consequently falling. Wobbuffet scrambles to catch him and jumps on top of a sleepingSnorlax's belly. Meowth lands just behind Wobbuffet, the force of his impact causing Snorlax's belly to bounce Team Rocket away and send them blasting off again.

Meloetta returns to Axew and Scraggy with an Oran Berry for each of them. It takes its Melody Berry back from Axew, happy to have helped, but then grows sad again as it looks at its Melody Berry, then into the forest.

Meowth and Wobbuffet pull themselves to their feet after landing behind a large rock, bemoaning their misfortune again. They spot something over the rock and rush over to behind a tree to get a closer look. They find Snivy and Emolga asking aChikorita andTorchic about the missing Melody Berries. ATogepi emerges between Team Rocket and the others, happily tossing the blue Melody Berry up and down as it strolls along. The others notice Togepi just before it trips and drops the Berry, sending it bouncing away. Emolga, Snivy, Torchic, Chikorita, Meowth, and Wobbuffet all chase after the Berry.

The Berry begins bouncing down a steep, undulating hill riddled with holes, eventually falling into a hole. Everyone follows the Berry into the hole, and they begin popping out of hole after hole, none of them quite succeeding in catching the Berry. The Berry bounces out of one last hole, and Emolga glides after it. She reaches out to grab it, but it keeps just barely eluding her grasp until she overshoots it and slams facefirst into a large rock, causing it to tip back to reveal another hole. The Berry bounces into this hole just before the rock tips back to the ground and throws Emolga onto her back. Togepi watches gleefully from the top of the hill. Meowth and Wobbuffet run after the Berry, but fail to watch their step and fall into a hole. Torchic and Chikorita both run ahead to intercept the Berry, but collide with each other, allowing the Berry to slip between them. Togepi jumps giddily as it continues watching the slapstick.

Meowth and Wobbuffet continue chasing the Berry down the ridge, with Emolga, Snivy, Chikorita, and Torchic coming up on them from behind, eventually pushing into each other until they all trip, fall, and roll together in a wheel. The Berry and the Pokémon all careen down to where the hill abruptly cuts off into a sheer cliff, then past the edge of the cliff. Snivy grabs onto a large rock near the edge of the clifftop with Vine Whip to stop them from falling off. Meowth and Wobbuffet slip out of Emolga's grasp as they make a last desperate attempt to grab for the Berry before they fall, then Chikorita reaches out and grabs the Berry with its own Vine Whip as Snivy pulls the others back onto the clifftop. Meowth and Wobbuffet fall into another hole, then are carried out of a tunnel at the bottom of the small ridge it is dug into by a line ofDiglett, who hoist them onto aDugtrio that sends them blasting off yet again.

Pikachu asks aPiplup,Squirtle, andPsyduck near the shore of a lake about the Melody Berries, showing them the purple Melody Berry they already have. Piplup claims to have seen it, and leads the others a few feet over to aClamperl, claiming its pearly center to be a Melody Berry. Pikachu, Oshawott, and Pansage are disappointed and exasperated at this. Clamperl thenClamps down on Piplup's flipper, causing it to cry out in pain and run around until it runs into a tree, causing Clamperl to let go. Oshawott then takes the purple Melody Berry and talks to Psyduck. Psyduck only stares blankly at the Berry being shoved in its face, sweating nervously. This unnerves Oshawott and causes him to begin sweating in turn. Psyduck only continues staring and sweating. Oshawott sighs in exasperation.

Suddenly, Pikachu spots aCorphish scuttling into the lake, the yellow Melody Berry in its pincer. Oshawott volunteers to go after Corphish and retrieve the Melody Berry, then Piplup volunteers. The two bicker about who will go after the Berry until Pikachu breaks them up. Oshawott, Piplup, and Squirtle then go in after Corphish together, leaving the purple Melody Berry with Pansage. They swim down to confront Corphish. Piplup makes the first strike against Corphish, only for Corphish to hit it with aCrabhammer that sends it flying up out of the lake before splashing back down. Oshawott and Squirtle then each take a turn lunging at Corphish, only for each of them to get swatted into the air in turn. Pikachu and Pansage, only seeing the Pokémon popping out of the water and not the actual fighting, are confused and concerned.

At the bottom of the lake, Oshawott, Piplup, and Squirtle stare Corphish down side by side. Corphish eggs them on playfully, and Oshawott and Squirtle sweep out to the sides to flank Corphish. Oshawott throws hisscalchop at Corphish as Squirtle unleashes a Water Gun. Corphish jumps up to dodge both attacks, causing Oshawott and Squirtle to hit each other instead and sending them flying up out of the lake again. Corphish celebrates its clever play, but this turns out to be premature, as Piplup's own Water Gun catches it off guard and sends it flying up out of the lake. The yellow Melody Berry slips from Corphish's grasp as it falls back into the lake. The Berry lands directly in front of a demoralized Team Rocket. Meowth promptly grabs it, and he celebrates their seeming reversal of fortune before running away. However, he runs right into Psyduck, who sends Team Rocket blasting off once again with Water Gun. The yellow Melody Berry slips out of Meowth's grasp and right into Pikachu's.

As Meowth bemoans his failure again as he and Wobbuffet soar through the air, he spots the red Melody Berry, the last one, lodged in the cloud atop aDrifblim drifting towards them. He and Wobbuffet eagerly dive at Drifblim and latch on to its face. Drifblim apparently takes no issue with this. The three of them drift past Snivy, Emolga, Chikorita, Torchic, and Togepi as they walk along the side of a gorge, Togepi holding the purple Melody Berry. Chikorita lashes a vine around Drifblim and Team Rocket, and Snivy, Torchic, and Emolga grab on as Chikorita pulls itself up to them. Togepi runs after them, Berry in hand. As Togepi chases them through the bottom of the gorge, Bulbasaur and Totodile notice them coming up from behind them, Bulbasaur grabs onto Emolga with its Vine Whip, and Totodile grabs onto Bulbasaur as as it pulls itself up.

By the time Pikachu, Oshawott, Piplup, Squirtle, and Corphish spot Drifblim and its hangers-on drifting down the gorge, Drifblim is weighed down enough that Piplup and Oshawott can simply jump up to grab onto Totodile. Squirtle jumps up to grab Oshawott, Corphish grabs Squirtle, and Pikachu climbs up the chain of Pokémon, climbing onto Meowth's head right as a strong gust of wind strikes them. Togepi is gleeful as ever as it watches from the ground, but Pansage, who has joined it with the yellow and blue Melody Berries, is much more anxious.

The sudden gale carries everyone high into the air above the lake, causing the whole chain to swing back and forth wildly. Pikachu strains to climb up Drifblim's body to grab the red Melody Berry. Meloetta, Axew, and Scraggy crest a nearby hill and see the situation. Meloetta hands the pink Melody Berry to Axew again and flies after the others. Meowth and Wobbuffet's grip on Drifblim begins to slip as Pikachu continues straining to reach for the red Berry. The Berry dislodges from Drifblim's cloud and rolls into Pikachu's hands just moments before Meowth loses his grip, causing everyone else to fall. Meloetta reaches them and saves them withPsychic. Axew and Scraggy join Pansage and Togepi. Meloetta flies around joyously, the others trailing around behind in its psychic wake, before setting all of them down gently on the bottom of the gorge with Pansage, Axew, Scraggy, and Togepi. All of them, that is, except Team Rocket, who are deposited on top of Crustle, who sends them blasting off one last time with another Sandstorm. Togepi, Pansage, Oshawott, and Pikachu present the Melody Berries they have collected to Meloetta, who has the pink Berry again, and there is much rejoicing.

That night, all of the Pokémon who helped gather the Melody Berries, as well as several others includingJigglypuff, thePichu Brothers,Spiky-Eared Pichu, andPignite, are gathered back at the plateaus to watch the concert. Meloetta uses the five Melody Berries to regrow the Melody Tree, then opens the concert with Relic Song again, flying around and dancing joyously with the Berries as magical pyrotechnics fill the clearing. Meloetta concludes the song hovering high in the air, the moon behind it. The narrator and audience praise Meloetta's singing. Meloetta transforms into its Pirouette Forme as it flies back down to the stage. Everyone begins dancing along with Meloetta and continue to dance as the credits roll.

Errors

  • When they are tracking down the first four Melody Berries, Pikachu's group has the purple Melody Berry and Togepi has the blue one. However, when Togepi and its group see Drifblim drifting above the gorge, suddenly Togepi has the purple Berry, and when we next see Pansage, he has the blue Berry. This swap is indisputably a continuity error, as Togepi and Pansage had not found each other yet when Togepi is first shown with the purple Berry.
    • Similarly, when Pikachu and friends present the Melody Berries they have collected to Meloetta, Meloetta has the pink Melody Berry, despite having given it to Axew before going to rescue everyone with Psychic. Axew could conceivably have returned the pink Berry to Meloetta between scenes - indeed, Pansage presumably hands the yellow Berry to Oshawott between scenes - but it is odd for only Axew to hand Meloetta his Berry before the others present their Berries.
  • When Meowth begins losing his grip on Drifblim, and again when Pikachu grabs the red Melody Berry and Meowth fully loses his grip, Chikorita's vines wrapped around Meowth, Wobbuffet, and Drifblim are missing. It is clear that they are missing and not that Chikorita released its vines between cuts because Chikorita's vines are visible in the intervening scene of the whole group swaying, and in the scene of everyone falling, Chikorita's vines are seen retracting as though they had been wrapped around Team Rocket and Drifblim the whole time.
  • ThePichu standing next toSpiky-eared Pichu and thePichu Brothers is implied to be thePikachu-colored Pichu, but it appears as a normal Pichu.

Dub edits

  • The version of this Pikachu short used inCamp Pokémon cuts approximately a minute-and-a-half of footage: when Meowth attacks Crustle and it uses Sandstorm, when Meowth say he needs a nap and Wobbuffet agrees, when Axew fights with Scraggy, when Piplup, Oshawott, Squirtle battle with Corphish, when Psyduck uses Water Gun on Meowth and Wobbuffet, when Meowth complains while flying through the air, and when Meowth and Wobbuffet land on Crustle and they blast off. This is likely due to the fighting in the cut footage being considered inappropriate for the app's intended audience.
