TheOld Amber was introduced as aTrainer card in thePokémon Trading Card Game in theMajestic Dawn expansion, first released in the JapaneseDawn Dash expansion. It is aFossil Trainer card, so after it is played it is put onto the Bench as aColorless-typeBasic Pokémon. It has aPoké-Body that prevents all damage it would take from attacks while it is on the Bench. It can evolve intoAerodactyl that evolve from Old Amber.

Main article:Old Amber Aerodactyl (Dark Explorers 97)

During the Black & White Series, theDark Explorers expansion included theItem cardOld Amber Aerodactyl. It allows players to look at the bottom seven cards of their deck, reveal an Aerodactyl they find there, and put it onto their Bench. The other six cards are then shuffled back into the deck.

Main article:Antique Old Amber (151 154)

The Scarlet & Violet Series saw the release ofAntique Old Amber in the151 expansion. This card is similar to the original Old Amber, as it is also a Fossil Trainer card. It has anAbility that prevents all effects of the opponent's Pokémon's Abilities on this card.

Due to how cards are identified by name by effects, many effects do not recognize Old Amber cards as being Fossil cards. This occurs even if the card in question is a Fossil Trainer card.

Mysterious Fossil andUnidentified Fossil are also Fossil Trainer cards. Neither feature Old Amber, but both can evolve into certain Aerodactyl.Buried Fossil shares the naming scheme, but is a regular Pokémon. While no Old Amber is present, it can evolve in the same way Mysterious Fossil does.

Merchandise

The Old Amber has been featured in several officially licensed figures and goods.

Trivia

Origin

The Old Amber's design seemingly alludes to the theory popularized byGeorge Poinar Jr. of extractingDNA from an insect trapped in fossilizedamber. The reference to the theory was originally more evident by the presence of amosquito in the item's artwork fromGeneration I.
