Nidoqueen (Japanese:ニドクインNidoqueen) is a dual-typePoison/GroundPokémon introduced inGeneration I.

Itevolves fromNidorina when exposed to aMoon Stone. It is the final form ofNidoran♀. Nidoqueen is related to theNidoran♂ line, serving asNidoking'sfemale counterpart.

Biology

Nidoqueen is a large, bipedal bluemammalianPokémon with distinctreptilian features. Its body is encased with extremely hard scales that serve as excellent protection from any attack and stand up when Nidoqueen is excited or provoked. It has a blunt snout, narrow brown eyes, and large ears with brown insides. There is a small horn on its forehead, a single spine on each ear, and a line of toxic spikes running down its back. Each hand has three short claws, and each foot has two claws. Its lower jaw, the front of its abdomen, and two plates on its chest are cream-colored. It has a thick, powerful tail. Nidoqueen is a female-only species. As stated inAn Illustrated Book of POCKET MONSTERS, it cannot layEggs as it loses the ability to do so uponEvolution.

Nidoqueen can be quite fierce and is very protective of its young. This Pokémon is at its strongest when it is defending its young, and it will try to seal the entrance to its burrow to protect them. It also places its young in the gaps between the spines on its back, which never release poison when the children are present. Nidoqueen is more adept at being defensive than offensive. Nidoqueen's armor-like scales allow it to defend its children from any attack. When in contact with foes, it can poison them withthe spikes on its back or cause small tremors by slamming the ground. It is also adept at sending foes flying with harsh tackles, and it uses its hefty bulk to execute powerful moves. Being the result of an Evolution viaEvolution stone, Nidoqueen is rarely found in the wild. However, they can be found insavannas and plains.

Evolution

Nidoqueen evolves fromNidorina and is the final form ofNidoran♀.

Trivia

Baby Nidoqueen and Rhyhorn inMewtwo Returns
  • Nidorina and Nidoqueen's inability to lay Eggs was established by Japanese media before breeding became a game mechanic.[1][2]
    • Despite being in theNo Eggs Discovered Group, Nidoqueen was shown to be capable of breeding in the TV specialMewtwo Returns, when acloned Nidoqueen and a clonedRhyhorn produced Eggs containing both baby Rhyhorn andbaby Nidoqueen (not babyNidoran♀). In addition, several of Nidoqueen's Pokédex entries imply it's still capable of childrearing.
  • Nidorina and Nidoqueen are the only two Pokémon that cannot breed even though their pre-evolved form can breed.
  • Nidoqueen is the only Nidoran evolutionary line member whoseShiny color is not the same as its opposite-gender counterpart's normal color.
  • Nidoqueen and its male counterpart Nidoking share theircategory name withRhydon andRhyperior. They are all known as the Drill Pokémon. Additionally, all four are partlyGround-types.
  • In the Japanese gamesPokémon Red and Green, Nidoqueenweighs 6.0 kg instead of 60.0 kg (as it does in all other games). This has no mechanical significance, as no game mechanics use weight inPokémon Red and Green.

Design variations

Nidoqueen'sPokémon Stadium model

Nidoqueen is typically depicted without visible teeth. However, particularly prior toGeneration V, several depictions across media do show Nidoqueen with various amounts of teeth. Nidoqueen'sCarddass art also shows it with a number of extra spikes on its limbs.

In particular, Nidoqueen has four teeth in itsPokémon Red and Blue key artwork. In thecore series games, Nidoqueen has visible teeth in itsPokémon Gold andGeneration IIIsprites. In theside series games, Nidoqueen has four teeth in itsPokémon Stadium model, which was reused inPokémon Stadium 2,Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness,Pokémon Colosseum, andPokémon Battle Revolution. Nidoqueen has also been depicted with teeth in themanga, includingPokémon Adventures,Ash & Pikachu, andPokémon Pocket Monsters.

Origin

Nidoqueen appears to share traits ofkaiju, rhinoceroses, gorillas, rabbits, andporcupines and is most likely based on its male counterpart, Nidoking. The coverings on its chest and its lower abdomen collectively resemble a two-piecebikini.

Name origin

Nidoqueen may be a combination ofneedle andqueen. It may also involve 二度nido (twice).
