An encounter where a natural object is present

Natural objects (Japanese:自然物natural objects) are a game mechanic inPokémon X and Y. In many areas, it is possible for a natural object to appear behind an opponent in a wild or Trainer battle. These objects can be hit by certain moves that can target multiple Pokémon. If the object is hit, it will break or drop Berries and remain in that state until the end of the battle, when the player will pick up an item in the aftermath of the battle.

If a natural object can appear in an area, a platform will be visible behind the opponent. Natural objects will appear on this platform, with only one appearing at a time in any battle. Natural objects cannot appear whilesurfing, but they may appear whilefishing so long as the player is not surfing.

Most areas where natural objects can appear have three objects that may appear. In these areas, natural objects will appear approximately 50% of the time. In areas where less than three natural objects can appear, natural objects will appear proportionally less often.

If a move does not hit at least one Pokémon, it cannot destroy a natural object. Also, if there is aterrain present, natural objects will temporarily disappear and will not be able to be affected until it dissipates.

If the playerloses, runs from the battle, or catches a Pokémon, they will not be able to pick up an item from any broken natural object.

Location sets

Every location where natural objects may appear is classified as a certain type of area. Certain locations (such asRoute 18) may be divided into two different areas where different natural objects may appear. Every natural object only appears in one type of area.

A common natural object has approximately a 20% chance of appearing in a battle, while a rare natural object has a 10% chance of appearing. This means that in areas with the maximum of three natural objects, there is a 50% chance of finding no natural object in a battle.
