As the protagonist
Nate is a young boy living inAspertia City with his childhood friendHugh. At the start of the game, he sets off with Hugh to collect his first Pokémon. They then go their separate ways, and he starts hisjourney across theUnova region.

As a non-playable character
If the player choosesRosa, Nate will appear in-game as an NPC, first met inNimbasa City. He will join the player in aMulti Battle againstEmmet andIngo. Afterwards, he will give the player theVs. Recorder.
Nate will then appear as the player's partner in theBattle Subway when choosing to ride the Multi-Train. Two of the following Pokémon are picked from the corresponding list, depending on what the player wants him to base his team on. If the player chooses "A balance between the two," Nate's Pokémon are chosen from either list.

Nate appeared in thePokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2 Animated Trailer, first seen meetingBianca together withHugh, choosingTepig as hisfirst partner Pokémon. He later appeared meetingColress inCastelia City, facingElesa at theNimbasa Gym, battlingTeam Plasma aboard thePlasma Frigate alongside Hugh andCheren, and chasing a member of theShadow Triad across the frozenOpelucid City, but failing to recover themysterious item they had stolen.
