Nando (Japanese:ナオシNaoshi) is a recurring character inPokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl. He is a wanderingminstrel who enjoys music and as such always carries his golden lyre with him.
History
Nando debuted inDawn Of A New Era!. At the time, he was confused as to whether he should challengeGyms or compete inPokémon Contests. Trying to decide between the two, he battled bothAsh andDawn with hisBudew, whichevolved intoRoselia during hisbattle with Ash. Afterwards, Nando decided to go after bothBadges andRibbons.
He appeared again inA Secret Sphere of Influence!, where he was falsely arrested after being accused of the theft of theAdamant Orb from theEterna Historical Museum. He revealed to Ash andhis friends that he had won both his first Ribbon in a Contest as well as theForest Badge fromGardenia. Under questioning fromOfficer Jenny, he insisted that he was innocent of the theft. OnceTeam Rocket was identified as the true culprits and the Orb was recovered, he was released. After being exonerated of the crime, he explained the mythology behind the Adamant Orb to Ash and his friends, citingthe Original Story from theSinnoh myths.

Nando reappeared inDawn's Early Night!, where he met up with Ash,Brock, and Dawn at the front door ofHearthome Gym. He informed them that Hearthome City'sGym Leader was absent and would be away for some time, then suggested that Ash enter the famousHearthome City Tag Battle Competition. Nando, however, declined to enter the competition himself. Later, he walked with Dawn towards theContest Hall, where he metZoey for the first time. When Nando introduced himself as both aTrainer and aCoordinator, Zoey said he needed to make up his mind, to which he replied thathis Pokémon guide him. He later entered theHearthome Contest, which was held under theDouble Performance format. During thePerformance Stage, Nando used hisKricketune andSunflora to deliver a music-themed performance, which impressed theContest Judges enough for them to secure him a place among the Coordinators proceeding to theBattle Stage. There, he managed to defeatJessilina to advance to the final round, where he faced off against Zoey and won. This victory gave Nando his second Contest Ribbon.
Nando made a cameo appearance inA Breed Stampede! alongsideKenny inMarian's news report about Coordinators. It was revealed in the report that he won his fourth Ribbon during a Pokémon Contest inBeach Rose Town.
After a long absence, he appeared again inLast Call — First Round! as a participant in theSinnoh Grand Festival. He made it past the Performance Stage and quickly reached the Top 4 as seen inComing Full-Festival Circle!. In the said episode, he fought a hard battle against Zoey with hisLopunny and Kricketune, even impressingFantina a lot with their combinations; however, Zoey eventually won the battle. In the same episode, Nando was seen playing music to the Pokémon around the area. He made a brief appearance inthe following episode watching Dawn and Zoey compete in the finals and then again after the Grand Festival had finished announcing that he was going to compete in theSinnoh League.
Nando appeared inAn Old Family Blend!, where he attended the opening ceremony of theLily of the Valley Conference alongside the other participants. When the first round match-ups were revealed, he was assigned as Ash's first opponent. In thefollowing episode, he faced Ash in a three-on-threeSingle Battle. Though he fought with his own tactics and battle style, he was defeated and eliminated from the competition. After the battle, he bade Ash, Brock, and Dawn farewell, telling them that he would continue his journey and keep training.
Nando made a cameo appearance in the ending credits ofZoroark: Master of Illusions.
Character

Nando's character can be easily described as calm and collected. Even in the most tense of situations, such as being arrested for a crime he did not commit, he will always look to the positive side. He enjoys music and his favorite pastime is to play his lyre for anyone who will care to listen, whether they behuman orPokémon, in hopes of spreading the tranquility he feels inside to others. This personality trait is also reflected in his choice of Pokémon and even theSeals he uses inPokémon Contests.
Even if Nando encounters aTrainer that has hostility towards him, such asZoey, he will still treat that Trainer with the utmost respect. As seen inDawn of a New Era!, Nando likes to be a peace maker, helpingAsh andDawn settle their differences on whether battling or coordinating are better than one another.
Pokémon
Nando tends to choose Pokémon with some sort of musical ability which fits his musical style. He seems to favorBug- andGrass-type Pokémon and he likes to usesound-based moves during his performances and battles. Nando's Pokémon are also known for being able to exhibit both beauty and strength.
