History

Ruby & Sapphire arc

Mumu meeting Ruby

Mumu first appeared as aMudkip inTrying to Trounce Torchic, as one of the two Pokémon that was inProfessor Birch's bag. WhenRuby was rescued bySapphire from a pack of wildMightyena, she took him to herSecret Base. He thought she was a Pokémon of some sort, and was shocked to the spine when she started talking. The two ended up getting into a fight after he orderedNana toBite the supposed "Pokémon." Still holding his own Pokémon from fighting back, he phoned Professor Birch on thePokégear that was in hisbag, and was told to choose the "blue Pokémon," which he then chose over the "green one". However, against Sapphire's well-trainedChic, he was no match, even with his type advantage. Helater nicknamed him "Mumu" after he defeated a wildDustox and decided he would be best for theTough category ofPokémon Contests.

InTripped Up by Torkoal, Mumuevolved into Marshtomp, gaining the awe of thePokémon Fan Club Chairman, who also adored Nana andKiki. He tried to help Ruby enlist in the Contests there, but with no HoennContest Pass, he wasn't accepted. Instead, the two ended up being dragged into a mire when threeMagma Admins kidnapped the two along withCaptain Stern. When Ruby awakened Mumu popped out of hisPoké Ball to help free him, but to no avail. Upon realizing that the one interrogating Stern for information now was in cahoots withTabitha andCourtney, who had attacked him and Sapphire before, Ruby used hisPokéblock-making skills to lureBlaise'sSlugma into theSubmarine they were planning to steal. Mumu managed to counter Slugma's fire attacks, but soon fell to Blaise's illusions. After overcoming it, he attacked withEarthquake, allowing the two to reach the escape pod.

Mumu earning the Super Ribbon

InHanging Around With Slaking I, Mumu battled Ruby's father,Norman. After Nana and Kiki were defeated due to Norman knowing how they attacked it was revealed that they were a distraction for Mumu to set up aMud Shot attack, which landed a direct hit after shooting through some pipes. Norman quickly counters withVigoroth and it seems the two were evenly matched. Ruby soon attempts to fire Mumu's high-powered Mud Shot, but it is stopped byMr. Stone'sCastform'sSunny Day.

InIt's Absol-lutely a Bad Omen, Mumu advanced Ruby through theNormal Rank of the Tough Contest. InGoing to Eleven with Loudred and Exploud I, Mumu is used alongside Ruby's other Pokémon to battle against Courtney and herNinetales. Although Ruby had a five-to-one advantage, his team was beaten due to Ninetales having control of nine different fireballs.

Mumu battling Archie and Maxie

InI More Than Like You, Luvdisc I, Mumu advanced Ruby through the Super Rank of the Tough Contest. After the contest Mumu is used in Ruby's battle againstWallace alongside the rest of his team, barFeefee, and loses.

InMaster Class with Masquerain, Mumu evolved intoSwampert.Soon after Mumu advanced Ruby through the Hyper Rank of the Tough Contest.

InThe Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon X, Mumu, alongside Ruby and Sapphire's other Pokémon, battledArchie andMaxie. He and Chic attempted to deliver a decisive blow, but failed to do any real damage. InThe Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XIV, Mumu and Chic attack the meteor fragment coming from Archie and Maxie, which sends a powerful blast of energy out. The energy hits Maxie and Archie's foreheads, turning them back to normal and stops the power of theRed andBlue Orbs.

InIt All Ends Now VIII, Mumu battled alongside the rest of Ruby and Sapphire's Pokémon against Maxie and Archie. Later that day, Mumu is shown to have won the Master Rank of the Tough Contest, wearing aYellow Scarf.

InThe Final Battle III, Mumu is taughtHydro Cannon. He was soon used alongsideBlasty andSilver's Feraligatr to attack with Hydro Cannon to help destroy Guile Hideout's fakeKyogre.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

InSalamence Evolves, Mumu, alongside Chic and Sceptile, trained underUltima in order to fully master theultimatemoves. The training was issued bySteven Stone and Mr. Stone as part of a plan dedicated to preventing a giantmeteoroid from crashing into the planet. With Ruby having business elsewhere, Steven trained Mumu in hisTrainer's stead. When Ruby returned inGoodra Spits to stop the attackZinnia lead on theSea Mauville, heMega Evolved Mumu for the first time and used him to battle Zinnia'sGoodra.

Personality and characteristics

Mumu's Swampertite
Mumu and Ruby

Mumu was noted in his debut appearance for being less coordinated, swift, and graceful compared to the rest of Ruby'steam at the time; and it habitually left a trail of mucus from his nose. Despite this, Mumu quickly won Ruby over with his resourcefulness and ability to use his fin's enhanced senses to detect enemies.

As Ruby's Pokémon Contest representative for the Toughness category, Mumu exhibits great fortitude and power in contests and battle, becoming Ruby's main powerhouse as the chapter developed. Afterevolving, many of Mumu's clumsier traits as aMudkip seem to have faded.

Trivia

  • Although Mumu doesn'tevolve into hisfinal stage untilVolume 19, the cover art depicts him as a Swampert along withChic (who by then was already aBlaziken) the volume prior. This might be due to the fact that before being released in volume form, few to several chapters, even within the same arc, may be left uncollected, and so the fans were expected to be aware of his Evolution already, which happened mere chapters after the end of this volume. Alternatively, it may just be a result of the fact that Mumu and Chic were always seen in the same Evolution stage when placed in a volume cover together, just asExbo,Feraligatr, andMegaree were in the covers for theGold, Silver & Crystal arc.
  • Mumu's Contest call is, "Regardless of the effects of time, the toughness that this body encompasses never changes. Boiling with raging Torrent, this is the Pokémon Swampert—Mumu!"
  • Mumu is the only Pokémon inPokémon Adventures to have used the movesMud Sport orEndeavor.
  • Mumu, in all three of his Evolution stages, was the only one of itsspecies to physically appear in Pokémon Adventures.
  • Mumu is the only male Pokémon that Ruby currently owns.
