Morelull (Japanese:ネマシュNemasyu) is a dual-typeGrass/FairyPokémon introduced inGeneration VII.

Itevolves intoShiinotic starting atlevel 24.

Biology

Morelull is a small, whitePokémon similar to a mushroom. It is one of theshortestGrass-type Pokémon. It has large, black eyes with pale green half-circle markings on the outer sides. Small bumps ring the top of its head, similar to hair. Its head is much larger than its thin, stem-like body. At the base, the stem splits into three green roots that act as feet. Three large mushrooms sprout from the center of its head. Each mushroom has a thin white stem and a darker ring of color around the base of the cap. The center and largest mushroom is light pink, while the other two mushrooms are smaller and a light purplish-blue. At night, Morelull can make the spores filling its mushroom caps glow.

Morelull likes dark, damp areas such as dense jungles, but changes locations every night to avoid depriving the plants in any one area of too many nutrients. In addition to locomotion, its roots are also used to communicate with other Morelull.[1] When in danger, it scatters spores that burst into bright, glittering sparks. The pulsing light of the spores can induce drowsiness. It is rumored that once when a group of Morelull were disturbed and all threw out their spores at once, a plane passing overhead suffered a near brush with disaster.[2]. The caps on Morelull's head are a delicacy for Pokémon living in the forests and can grow back overnight.

InGeneration VII,Strength Sap was itssignature move, but other Pokémon could still inherit it viabreeding.

Evolution

Morelull evolves intoShiinotic.

Trivia

  • Morelull is the only Pokémon that can haveRain Dish but cannot learnRain Dance.
  • Morelull can be seen as a counterpart toParas. Both share theGrass type, the same base stat total of 285, evolve at Level 24, both are mushroom-based Pokémon and thus can learnSpore, and both can be found in the wild inPokémon Sun and Moon, taking the place of the other depending on thetime, with Morelull being found at night and Paras during the day.
  • Morelull is tied withCleffa andIgglybuff for having the lowest baseSpeed stat of allFairy-type Pokémon.
  • InPokémon Sun and Moon, while Morelull can learnSunny Day viaTM, its Evolution,Shiinotic, cannot learn it that way.
  • Morelull is the firstGrass/Fairy type to debut with this type combination, as theCottonee family were pure Grass in their debut.

Origin

Morelull may be based on bioluminescent mushrooms such as those of the genusMycena, although its name suggests inspiration from the genusMorchella. ItsFairy type may be due tofairy rings, or it may possibly be a reference tofairy fire.

Given that some of the foreign names ofits Evolution include the word "lamp", and that Morelull shine lights and put people to sleep, it may also be based on anightlight. The connection between fungi and lights may be a pun on the homophonous Japanese words 発酵hakkō (fermentation) and 発光hakkō (luminescence) — Morelull and Shiinotic's Japanesecategory is はっこうポケモンHakkō Pokémon.

Name origin

Morelull may be a combination ofmorel andlull.

Nemasyu may be a combination of 寝ne (sleep) andmushroom. It could also come from 寝ますnemasu (I'm going to sleep), with thesu ending particle being corrupted intoshu to indicate drowsiness.
