History

Pokémon the Series: The Beginning

Kanto
Togepi being offered to Giovanni by the Team Rocket trio

Togepi was found as aPokémon Egg byAsh inGrampa Canyon inAttack of the Prehistoric Pokémon. InWho Gets to Keep Togepi?, Ash,Misty,Brock, andMeowth fought over the Egg and competed in abattle tournament to determine who would be the eventual owner. When the Egg hatched intoTogepi, the first thing it saw was Misty, and it subsequently chose her as itsTrainer, thinking that she was its mother. This was in spite of the fact that Ash officially won the tournament.

Togepi had a habit of exploring its surroundings and getting itself into trouble, withPikachu close behind to protect it. This first happened inThe Case of the K-9 Caper! when Togepi wandered off after a piece of food that rolled to the edge of the tabletop. Seeing it about to fall, Pikachu rushed to save it, but instead, he became overbalanced and fell to the ground.

Togepi unintentionally helped the group findBlaine's secret Gym inRiddle Me This when it activated a switch by jumping onto aGyarados tap fixture.

InThe Battle of the Badge, Ash was startled by Togepi and accidentally sent it flying away, where it eventually ended up in the hands of Team Rocket. They duly presented it toGiovanni who was unimpressed as Togepi couldn't do anything remarkable at the time. Togepi managed to slip away and soon reunited with Misty.

Togepi saying goodbye to Voltorb

Although Togepi appeared harmless, it sometimes usedMetronome to escape dangerous situations. The first time this happened was inPikachu Re-Volts.Butch andCassidy'sDrowzee was using Metronome to attack Ash and his friends. Misty's Togepi began using it, causing an explosion that sent Butch and Cassidy flying. It happened again inIn the Pink. ARhyhorn was about to charge the group when Togepi usedMetronome to useTeleport. It also used the move later in the episode to stop aNidoking'sHyper Beam by usingBarrier.

InThe Underground Round Up, Togepi came across a playfulVoltorb rolling around. Seeing it as a game, Togepi got on top of Voltorb to have fun. Misty attempted to remove Togepi from it upon learning that Voltorb tended to explode, but Togepi refused to let go of its new friend. Team Rocket later appeared to capture Voltorb and Togepi used Metronome to stop them. However, the move turned into a uselessSplash. Togepi still tried to protect Voltorb, prompting Pikachu andPoncho'sDugtrio to protect them and send Team Rocket blasting off. Togepi was forced to say goodbye to its new friend after this, though Misty assured Togepi that it could still be friends with Voltorb even when they were separated.

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

Togepi hugging Pikachu

InTanks a Lot!, Togepi befriended aSentret. The two played together before rolling off a cliff and into the opening of Team Rocket'sArbo-Tank. Togepi jumped on a lever, causing the mecha to take off and go on a rampage. During the rampage, Togepi used Metronome to drill a hole through a mountain to keep it from crashing. Eventually, Togepi and Sentret were rescued by Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket, after which the mecha promptly exploded.

InNo Big Woop!, Togepi kept a group ofWooper under control by playing a tambourine to their favorite beat while Ash and Misty searched for the missing member of the group.

Even though Misty knew Togepi could battle, she only used it once to battle Ash. InThe Totodile Duel, Ash was using hisPikachu to battle Misty for ownership of aTotodile. Misty used Togepi because she knew Pikachu would never attack it, as Pikachu often babysit it. UsingCharm, Togepi ended up causing Pikachu to forfeit the round.

InMountain Time, Togepi was stuck with Pikachu and Team Rocket on top of a high balanced rock. When the rock fell, Togepi used Metronome to teleport the group and the rock back onto the balanced perch, putting them in relative safety again.

InHoundoom's Special Delivery, Togepi was separated from Misty and the rest of the group for some time after it used Metronome to teleport itself away fromJames's Weezing. AHoundoom rescued it from a tree, and the two became good friends, sharing a sad goodbye when it was time for Togepi to leave.

InAn EGG-sighting Adventure!, it used Metronome again to teleportAsh's Egg away fromTeam Rocket.

Togetic and Misty

InThe Princess and the Togepi, Togepi and Misty met up with Ash, Brock,May, andMax, before being captured by Team Rocket and taken to theMirage Kingdom, hired to do so by the corruptColonel Hansen, who sought to claim Togepi for himself in order to become Mirage Kingdom's new king. After Misty briefly lost Togepi during a clash with Colonel Hansen'sShedinja, it was found byMiranda and taken toPrincess Sarah, who returned it to Misty upon learning it was her Pokémon. When a mirage of the royal castle appeared in the sky, Togepi felt attracted towards it, even floating out of Misty's hands before Hansen once again attacked to steal Togepi.

InA Togepi Mirage!, Togepi used a newly learnedSafeguard to protect the group from Shedinja'sSolar Beam before transporting them to theTogepi Paradise on the other side of the mirage, which was suffering due to the presence of Hansen's impure heart and evil desires. When Togepi left the paradise on its own, it was attacked and knocked unconscious by Hansen's Pokémon, allowing him to steal it and use it to claim himself the Mirage Kingdom's throne. When Ash and his friends later confronted Hansen again, the Togepi from the paradise appeared and shared their energy with Misty's Togepi, allowing it toevolve into Togetic and protect the Togepi from Hansen's Shedinja. After Hansen had been defeated and arrested, Togetic expressed its desire to stay behind to protect the paradise. Misty accepted Togetic's choice, and the two shared a tearful hug before parting ways. Togetic was later seen observing the paradise, happy to see it restored.

Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

As a Togepi, it was close toMisty ever since its hatching, and they quickly developed a relationship akin to that between a mother and her child. However, despite its adorable appearance, Togepi boasted incredible power that showed itself on occasion.

As a Togepi, it was particularly curious about the world around itself. Because of this, it was prone to walking off and getting itself andPikachu, who would always pursue it, into dangerous situations, which usually resulted in Pikachu getting hurt while Togepi walked away unharmed. It was very friendly towards other Pokémon, particularly ones that were small, young, andwild, such as aSentret inTanks a Lot! and, much to Misty's dislike, aCaterpie inThe Bug Stops Here. It also made friends with Pokémon who had a fearsome reputation, such asTracey's Scyther. Again, it would be unaware of the potential dangers likeVoltorb inThe Underground Round Up.

Another one of Togepi's unlikely friendships was depicted inHoundoom's Special Delivery, where it was forced to say goodbye to its new friendDoomy; this showcased Togepi's ability to change hearts. It was also clever, as suggested by it recognizingGligarman quickly inThe Superhero Secret. When itevolved and assumed its new responsibility as theTogepi Paradise guardian inA Togepi Mirage!, Togetic was markedly more mature while maintaining its pure heart.
