Misty's Starmie (Japanese:カスミのスターミーKasumi's Starmie) was one of the three originalPokémon acquired byMisty in theKantoregion prior to the start of theanimated series, and the third to be seen in her possession.
Misty rarely used Starmie inbattle, generally favoringStaryu to battle on land and oftenPsyduck by mistake. Starmie was typically featured in a more instrumental capacity than its pre-evolved counterpart, being used totraverse water on many occasions.
InThe Water Flowers of Cerulean City, Starmie was used inMisty'sCerulean Gym match againstAsh. Misty had successfully beatenButterfree withStaryu, and Starmie was called out againstPidgeotto, suggesting that, at this time, Starmie was more powerful than Staryu. It dived underwater to dodge Pidgeotto'sWhirlwind and shot up into the air to land a Tackle. However, its second Tackle was deflected byWing Attack. It was blown into a Gym wall by aGust attack, on the brink of losing beforeTeam Rocket intervened. The battle was called off and Ash was given theCascade Badge regardless.
Starmie and Misty
InThe School of Hard Knocks, Misty was incensed byJoe's insistence that he could easily defeat herWater Pokémon as he had done it countless times on the simulator. She promptly challenged him to a real battle and sent out Starmie to prove its strength against hisWeepinbell. Starmie used a singleWater Gun and knocked out Weepinbell, leading to Joe's ridicule byGiselle. However, Misty then challenged Giselle, calling her out for not being a true friend. Giselle'sGraveler proved to be a very powerful opponent, deflecting Water Gun by spinning and then smashing into Starmie, shattering the center gem and knocking it through the window and into the pool. Starmie's regenerative abilities were also demonstrated, as by the next time it was seen, its central core was repaired.
Starmie was sent out to battle a wildOddish inBulbasaur and the Hidden Village. It successfully weakened Oddish with Water Gun and Tackle, but was knocked out in one Tackle from theBulbasaur that came to its defense.
It appeared to have anAbility similar toWater Absorb, even though Abilities did not exist when Misty was a main character. This was demonstrated when, inBye Bye Butterfree, Starmie chased Team Rocket away with a Tackle, but was knocked out whenJessie smashed it with a hammer. However, it seemed to regain its health when Misty jetted water on it. InPokémon Scent-sation!, it helped Staryu andSquirtle put out the fire atCeladon Gym with Water Gun.
Starmie paired with Misty inThe Flame Pokémon-athon! during theBig P Pokémon Race. It made the final four as it was able to surf across the river course. However, like the other contestants, its efforts were sabotaged by Team Rocket, and it was blinded by aSludge attack fromWeezing, taking it out long enough to allowDario, the man who had encouraged Team Rocket, to make a break for the finish line.
Misty attempted to round off her team of four inPrincess vs. Princess with Starmie, but Psyduck popped out of itsPoké Ball instead. This happened quite commonly with Starmie and Psyduck.
InThe Misty Mermaid, Misty stopped off at the Cerulean Gym afterHorsea was feeling sick due to a lack of open water exercise. Misty also reluctantly left Starmie there because hersisters wanted to borrow it for their water ballet performances.
Misty reunited with Starmie inCerulean Blues, when she assumed the role of the Cerulean Gym Leader. Starmie was later scared off duringGyarados's rampage.
Starmie briefly reappeared inA Date with Delcatty when Misty was feeding the Pokémon.
InBearing Down Easy!, Misty used Starmie to destroy some ice so Ash and his friends could chase after aBeartic. It was soon after recalled to avoid being frozen.
Personality and characteristics
As Starmie wasn't given many onscreen appearances, little is known about its personality. When inbattle, it was shown to be quite obedient and loyal toMisty. Starmie has been known to sometimes droop and bend its points when in pain or disappointment.
Misty forms async pair with Starmie inPokémon Masters EX. Misty notes that the Starmie that she uses inPasio is different from the one she uses at her Gym, and was obtained from anEgg when she left her original Starmie at thePokémon Day Care.
Misty's Starmie (nicknamedスタちゃんSta-chan in the Japanese version) was first used during aGym battle againstRed inSuddenly Starmie. It easily withstoodSaur'sVine Whip and then swiftly defeated him.
A† shows that the move was used recently, unless all moves fit this case or there are fewer than five known moves.

Despite Starmie serving as Misty's signature Pokémon in thegames, in the animated series it has had much less screentime thanits pre-evolved form.
Starmie has had the longest absence of any Pokémon belonging to one ofAsh's friends in the main series, with a gap of 1,164 episodes between its physical appearances inThe Misty Mermaid andBearing Down Easy!.
