Mirage Island (Japanese:まぼろしじまPhantom Island) is a hard-to-reach location inHoenn, found onRoute 130 inPokémon Ruby, Sapphire, andEmerald. It can only be visited under highly rare circumstances.
In the games
The island is inhabited bywildWynaut, which range fromlevel 5 to level 50. Most notably, the island also bears a tree where the one and onlyLiechi Berry in the game can be picked. It can be used as aheld item inbattles, where it will increase a Pokémon'sAttack in a pinch.
Every day, a random number between 0 and 65535 is generated by the game. If this number matches the first two bytes of thepersonality value of anyPokémon in theplayer's party, then Mirage Island will appear. (Consequently, Mirage Island can be made to disappear and reappear for that day by removing and putting back the matching Pokémon in the party, and Mirage Island will disappear at the end of the day barring the unlikely outcome of two matching numbers being generated in a row.) This makes Mirage Island's appearance even rarer than encountering aShiny Pokémon, although the probability increases with the number of Pokémon the player has. The odds of a single Pokémon activating Mirage Island is 1/65536; this chance is increased to approximately 1/10923 if the player has a full party, assuming no two Pokémon in the player's party have the same first two bytes in their personality values.
An old man in the southeastern hut inPacifidlog Town will tell the player whether or not he can see Mirage Island, allowing the player to check if they have a matching Pokémon without having to leave the town. Since Mirage Island's number does not change throughout a given day, it is possible for theplayer to freely move Pokémon between theboxes and theparty while attempting to check if any Pokémon in the party matches the Mirage Island number.
Technical details
Two random bytes ("Mirage Island Value") are generated for the day once after pressing "CONTINUE GAME," and will be used until the in-game clock passes the midnight of the next day to generate a new value. The Mirage Island Value is generated bypseudorandom number generation and relies on the Elapsed-RTC-days since the player set the in-game clock at home to determine the Initial RTC(d/h/m/s) and start to calculate elapsed RTC. The elapsed RTC days have a one-to-one correspondence with the Mirage Island Value which can be sort as a list[1]. For example, if the number of elapsed RTC days is 0, 1, or 7410, Mirage Island Value will be 0x0000.[2]
Meanwhile, a game that has reached the maximum recordable play time (999 hours and 59 minutes) will continue generating the Mirage Island Value, because the elapsed RTC days are still continue accumulating until reaching its upper limit of 65535(0xFFFF).[3] Only if the cartridge's hardware battery has run dry (causing the real-time clock to stop functioning) or an RTC glitch has occurred (such as theBerry glitch ornew battery glitch), will the Mirage Island Values stop generating. At that time, the Mirage Island Value will stay at the last generated value.[4]
Theoretically, elapsed RTC days range from 0 to 65535, but due to the hardware RTC range (2000/01/01-2099/12/31), the actual maximum range of elapsed RTC days is 36524, which means the maximum number of possible Mirage Island Values is 36525; removing duplicate values, the final number is 27925. If the player were to catch awild Pokémon, the odds of this Pokémon'spersonality value causing Mirage Island to appear would be 27925/65536 (approximately 42.6%). However, the initial RTC set by that player and the Berry glitch in Ruby and Sapphire can affect the number of Mirage Island Values so that the total number can be lower than 27925.

Pokémon the Series
While Mirage Island does appear on maps inPokémon the Series, the whirlpools around it make it almost impossible to get to or off the island.
Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
InWho, What, When, Where, Wynaut?,Ash,his friends,Drew, andTeam Rocket landed on Mirage Island afterTeam Rocket's submarine crashed.May and Drew got separated from the others and ended up nearly drowning when Drew passed out, before being saved by the residentWynaut population. Team Rocket tried to steal the island's rareLiechi Berries, but were ultimately stopped. The group was eventually shipped off the island by a man namedRoderick, who also gave May some Liechi Berries to be used asPokéblock ingredients.

Pokémon Adventures
According toJuan, Mirage Island is not the actual name of the island, but what people refer to it as.
Ruby & Sapphire arc
InTalk About Timing, Treecko,Wally rescued a man searching for Mirage Island inPacifidlog Town from being washed away byKyogre's storm.
InA Royal Rumble with Regirock, Regice and Registeel II,Ruby andSapphire were washed up on Mirage Island, where they met Juan,Tate, and Liza. Juan explained that the time on the island advances at a different pace than in the outside world, resulting in the two having been unconcious for 21 days. The time on the island does not always travel at a constant speed, and when the time on the island goes normal, one can get on or off the island. While staying on the island, Ruby and Sapphire encountered thePlusle andMinun from theAbandoned Ship again and trained to become better atDouble Battles, in order to be ready to face Kyogre andGroudon. After their training was complete, theGym Leaders awarded Sapphire with theMind andRain Badges, before the twoPokédex holders left the island inRayquaza Redemption II.
While Ruby and Sapphire fought against Kyogre and Groudon, and subsequentlyArchie andMaxie, Juan, Tate, and Liza observed the events from Mirage Island through Juan'sKingdra's water screen. InIt All Ends Now VIII, when Ruby was revealed to be in possession ofCelebi, Juan realized that Celebi's presence on the island explained why time had become unstable there when Ruby and Sapphire arrived on and left it.
Trivia

(Pokémon Emerald: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, page 103)
- AlthoughPokémon Ruby, Sapphire, andEmerald include alocation pointer for "Mirage Island", anyWynaut caught here will simply display "Met onRoute 130" in theirsummary. This is because the player is technically still on Route 130's map.
- Although Mirage Island does not appear inOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the route description of Route 130 on thePokéNav Plusalludes to it; "This route was once a big topic of conversation due to a strange island that seemed to appear and then disappear."
- If aroaming Pokémon goes onto Route 130 while the Mirage Island is present, it can also be found in the tall grass.
- InPokémon Emerald: Prima's Official Strategy Guide (page 103), it is incorrectly said thatKelpsy Berries are available on Mirage Island.
- Because Mirage Island always begins with the same value, it is possible to use a Pokémon with the correct matching PID to consistently spawn Mirage Island before the first midnight on any new save file. If the battery has run dry this will persist until it is replaced as the value will continue to remain at 0x0000.
