Release information
This card was one of four possibleWizards Black Star Promos that people could receive with the purchase of a ticket for the theatrical release ofMewtwo Strikes Back starting November 12, 1999. The English print has a gold foil stamp in the top right corner that reads "Kids' WB Presents Pokémon The First Movie" and features artwork byKen Sugimori. Unknown quantities of this print erroneously have the gold foil stamp either missing or on the opposite corner rotated 180 degrees, and the stamp is absent from the French, German, Italian, and Spanish prints. In Japan, this print was available as anUnnumbered Promotional card on a two-card insert alongsideSuper Energy Retrieval in thePocket Monsters Fan Book, released on May 20, 1997.
It was later reprinted as another Wizards Black Star Promo with different artwork byBenimaru Itoh and was included in the VHS and DVD releases ofMewtwo Strikes Back from March 21, 2000. In Japan, this print was available on an insert in the June 1997 issue ofCoroCoro Comic, released on May 15, 1997.
A mail-in prize draw offering additional copies of both Japanese prints was published in the November 1998 issue ofCoroCoro Comic, released on October 15, 1998. People wishing to enter the prize draw were required to affix the application ticket on the bottom left of the article page to a postcard and send it toShogakukan. Two thousand winners were sent a set of four cards mounted on two plain sheets:Mew and theFan Book print of Mewtwo on one; theCoroCoro print of Mewtwo andMisty's Staryu on the other. The original English print on Japanese card stock was later available in the Japanese VHS release ofMewtwo Strikes Back from February 12, 1999.
The French version of the original print mistakenly translated Mewtwo's name to "Deuxmiaou". The reprint uses the correct "Mewtwo".
