Mega Stone
AMega Stone (Japanese:メガストーンMega Stone) is a type ofitem introduced inGeneration VI that, if activated with aKey Stone, causes a specificPokémon to undergoMega Evolution. There are 92 known Mega Stones, corresponding to 86 different Pokémon (one or more for every species that can Mega Evolve, exceptRayquaza).
FromGeneration VIII toPokémon Scarlet and Violet, Mega Stones (and Mega Evolution) do not appear in thecore series, but they do appear in other media.

In the core series
History
Mega Stones seem to originate from two distinct events.
Professor Sycamore theorizes that Mega Stones were born as a result of the power of theLegendary PokémonXerneasX/YveltalY (or bothZA) irradiating special stones, possiblyEvolution stones, whenAZ fired theultimate weapon for the first time 3,000 years ago; AZ himself supports this notion, further claiming that the recent firing of the ultimate weapon byLysandre inPokémon X and Y is the reason why new Mega Stones have been found as of the events ofPokémon Legends: Z-A.[1] Mega Stones also appear to have a connection, albeit not fully understood, to theAnistar CitySundial, as the light emitted by the sundial allows theMega Ring to react to underground Mega Stones.
InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Mega Stones, along withKey Stones, seem to have a strong connection to the meteoroids that rained down on theHoennregion millenia ago.Professor Cozmo andMatt found aGalladite and a Key Stone, respectively, inMeteor Falls, an area known for having been struck by meteors in the distant past;[2] even more notably, theMeteorite slowly changes to resemble a Mega Stone over the course of the game.MaxieOR/ArchieAS also considers the possibility of altering the Meteorite's qualities to those of a Mega or Key Stone. Unlike with proper Mega Stones, however, they are implied to lose their energy as the time goes on.[3] Similarly, an unremarkablepebble given to theplayer byZygarde is actually revealed to be aZygardite during the climax of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
In theMega DimensionDLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it is revealed that Mega Stones can be made out ofMega Shards, asQuasartico Inc.'s research team produced theMagearnite. According toJett, AZ also knew how to create a Mega Stone.[4]
Despite being the very first Pokémon to undergoMega Evolution,Rayquaza does not have a corresponding Mega Stone; instead, it has an internal organ that fills the same role, named the "mikado organ" (Japanese: ミカド器官). ADevon Corporation scientist proposed that the combination of Rayquaza's meteoroid diet and own internal energy creates an effect similar to that of a Mega Stone.[5]
Mechanics
Duringbattle, a Mega Stone can be activated while its correspondingPokémon is on the field. The stone must be held by the Pokémon or, inPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! (which do not featureheld items), be in the possession of the Pokémon'sTrainer. The Pokémon's Trainer can use theirKey Stone to activate the Mega Stone at the start of a turn, causing the Pokémon to undergoMega Evolution. Mega Stones are not consumed upon use, but only one Mega Stone use is possible per Trainer per battle. Mega Stones cannot be activated for Pokémon that have transformed into their corresponding Pokémon (either byTransform orImposter).
As held items, Mega Stones cannot be transfered to or from their corresponding Pokémon in battle;Thief andCovet will not steal them,Knock Off will not remove them or cause extra damage,Trick,Switcheroo,Fling, andBestow will fail, andSymbiosis will not activate.Embargo,Magic Room, andKlutz also do not prevent the use of Mega Stones.
During aContest Spectacular, if a Mega Stone is being held by its corresponding Pokémon, the Pokémon'sCoordinator will activate it automatically if the Pokémon performs aSpectacular Talent.
Acquisition
Generation VI
X and Y
Some Mega Stones are given or sold to the player by NPCs. Most others can be found in various locations aroundKalos, appearing as sparkles on the ground rather thanitem balls. These can only be found afterProfessor Sycamore upgrades the player'sMega Ring inAnistar City, which only happens after the player defeats theirrival inKiloude City. These Mega Stones also only appear from to, while the Anistar Sundial is active. Some Mega Stones are exclusive to each game.
The Blazikenite, Latiasite, and Latiosite are only obtainable viatrade. However, the former was also anevent item. Mega Stones introduced inOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are unobtainable.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Some Mega Stones are only obtainable by meeting certain requirements, such as defeatingLisia in aMaster Rank Contest Spectacular to receive the Lucarionite fromChaz, or receiving the Garchompite fromAarune after reaching theSuper-Secret Base Platinum Rank. However, most Mega Stones appear aroundHoenn as sparkles on the ground, much like inX and Y. Many of these only appear after the player defeats or capturesPrimal GroudonOR orPrimal KyogreAS.
The Diancite is unobtainable through normal gameplay; instead, it can be received from an NPC in anyPokémon Center if the player has aDiancie—anevent Pokémon—in their party.
Pokémon holding Mega Stones introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (except the Latiasite and Latiosite) cannot be traded to X and Y.
Generation VII
Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon
No Mega Stones are received before the player becomesChampion. The player receives an Alakazite, along with a Key Stone, fromDexio after defeating him atAncient Poni PathSM orPoni PlainsUSUM. The Kantofirst partners' Mega Stones can be received by defeatingRedSMUSUM orBlueUSUM in a challenge at theBattle Tree. Many Mega Stones (including the Alakazite) can be purchased at the Battle Tree for 64BP each. InSun and Moon, only the Mega Stones for Pokémon in theAlola Pokédex can be purchased. InUltra Sun and Ultra Moon, all Mega Stones except the Kanto first partners' and the Diancite can be purchased.
In Sun and Moon, the remaining Mega Stones are only obtainable via trade. However, they were all also event items. They were distributed viauniversal serial codes provided on the official Pokémon website, which were usable in allsoftware regions but expired on. Some were also distributed via unique serial codes to players who participated in certainOnline Competitions on thePokémon Global Link.

Only the Mega Stones for Pokémon in theKanto Pokédex are obtainable. The player receives the Kantofirst partners' Mega Stones, along with a Key Stone, from Blue at theOak Pokémon Research Lab after obtaining sevenBadges.Mewtwo's Mega Stones can be received fromGreen after defeating her inCerulean Cave. The remaining Kanto Pokémon Mega Stones can be purchased from aPoké Maniac atIndigo Plateau for$30,000 each after the player enters theHall of Fame.
Generation IX
Legends: Z-A
InPokémon Legends: Z-A andMega DimensionDLC, Mega Stones are obtainable again and can be held by the Trainer's Pokémon.
Mega Stones are received by numerous methods. The Mega Stone related to the player'sfirst partner Pokémon is given to them byAZ. Mega Stones related to defeatedRogue Mega Evolutions are given out as a reward for the respective Pokémon. Most of the remaining Mega Stones can be purchased atQuasartico Inc. or theStone Emporium. The Gardevoirite can be purchased at Quasartico Inc. as well as being given away throughMystery Gift. TheDiancite,Mewtwonite X, andMewtwonite Y are only obtainable via Mystery Gift. TheGreninjite,Delphoxite,Chesnaughtite,Baxcalibrite,Sceptilite,Swampertite, andBlazikenite are given out as rewards for participation in online ranked matches. TheZygardite andFloettite are received by obtaining the related Pokémon after completing the main story. TheChimechite,Golurkite,Crabominite,Golisopite,Scovillainite, andGlimmoranite are given out after defeating the related Mega-Evolved Pokémon inHyperspace Lumiose. TheRaichunite X,Raichunite Y,Latiasite,Latiosite,Lucarionite Z, andMagearnite are received after completing specificSide Missions.

Pokémon Shuffle

Before a Pokémon's Mega Evolution can be used in Pokémon Shuffle, its respective Mega Stone must be obtained (or inRayquaza's case, the
Meteorite). Methods to obtain a Mega Stone include:
- Defeating a Pokémon's Mega-Evolved form in aTrainer battle, usually at the end of eachmain stage zone.
- Completing certain objectives onMission Cards.
- Reaching certainTrainer ranks by catching several different species of Pokémon.
- Achieving a high rank in acompetitive stage.
- Clearing certain milestone stages in anescalation battle.
Having a Mega Stone allows the player to view all the Pokémon that can use it to Mega Evolve from thePokémon List, though their icon is faded and theirtype, attack power, andSkill are not visible.
Pokémon Rumble World
The player gains the ability to Mega Evolve their Pokémon after completing the challenge "Raid of the Mighty General", then receiving the Special Stone Shop and a Mega Key from the rewards section of the ordinary shop.Mega Stones for currently owned Pokémon can be bought and immediately attached to its corresponding Pokémon using the Special Stone Shop. The first Mega Stone of the player's choice is free (unless either theRed orBlue Orb is chosen instead) and every one after it costs 5 Poké Diamonds. During battle, Mega Evolution can be performed by tapping the Mega Evolution button using a Pokémon equipped with a Mega Stone in battle. Mega Evolution can be used again on any Pokémon in the same battle, unlike in the main games.
Mega-Evolved Pokémon revert after a completed trip, or when they are defeated or switched out. Mega Evolving will send out a shockwave that damages enemy Pokémon. This shockwave is capable of defeating and tipping over opposing Pokémon. Additionally, it also resets any negative status conditions or status changes the Pokémon had before Mega Evolving.
Pokémon UNITE
When using a Pokémon with aUnite license that allows it to Mega Evolve, that Pokémon's respective Mega Stone is forced to be used as a held item and cannot be removed. This Mega Stone is automatically obtained and applied to the Pokémon when obtaining the Unite license and cannot be used on any other Pokémon.
In animation
Pokémon the Series
InPokémon the Series: XY, Pokémon wear Mega Stones using equipment similar to that which theirTrainers use to hold theirKey Stones. The equipment disappears while the Pokémon is in its Mega Evolved state. InPokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Mega Stones appear to be merged with the body of their holders and only appear whenever the Mega Evolution process is triggered. InPokémon Journeys: The Series, Mega Stones descend in front of the holder seemingly out of nowhere once the process starts.
Pokémon the Series: XY
Mega Stones were first mentioned inLumiose City Pursuit!, whereProfessor Sycamore toldAsh that a "special stone" is required to trigger Mega Evolution, referring to Mega Stones.
Mega Stones made their physical debut inMega Evolution Special I. The Mega Stones seen wereAlain'sCharizardite X,Astrid'sAbsolite,Remo'sGarchompite,Siebold'sBlastoisinite, and aGyaradosite found by Alain from a set of ancient ruins. In addition, aLucarionite was seen in a painting featuring the first-ever Mega Evolution, which was shown to Alain by Professor Sycamore in a flashback. Astrid's Absolite made a brief reappearance during the opening credits ofDiancie and the Cocoon of Destruction.
Diantha's Gardevoir'sGardevoirite debuted inThe Bonds of Evolution!. The Embrace Pokémon was shown carrying its Mega Stone in a necklace around its neck.
InThe Cave of Trials!, a Lucarionite was found byKorrina in a cave nearGeosenge Town. After battling aBlaziken guarding the Lucarionite—which was afterward revealed to belong to Korrina's grandfather,Gurkinn—Korrina obtained the Mega Stone and used it to Mega Evolve herLucario. The uncut Lucarionite was later set in an armband byMcGinty, allowing Lucario to wear the Mega Stone. It retained it during its return inPokémon Journeys: The Series.
InThe Aura Storm!, Gurkinn was revealed to own a Lucarionite. Much like Korrina's Lucario, Gurkinn's Lucario also wears its Lucarionite in an armband on its left wrist.
InThe Bonds of Mega Evolution!, aMawilite was worn byMabel'sMawile in a piece of jewelry placed at the foot of its head jaws.
InOrigins of Mega Evolution!, a Lucarionite was featured in a story told by Gurkinn depicting the first known Mega Evolution.
InMega Evolution Special II,Steven'sShinyMetagross wore aMetagrossite as a large bracelet on its right foreleg. AnAmpharosite was also seen in a flashback in the same episode, having been found byLysandre before Alain could get his hands on it.
InGarchomp's Mega Bond!,Professor Sycamore's Garchomp wears a Garchompite as a choker around her neck.
Several different Mega Stones appeared inMega Evolution Special IV. The Mega Stones seen included aVenusaurite attached to the tree on aVenusaur's back; anAlakazite tied onto one ofAlakazam's spoons; andMalva'sHoundoominite, which is attached to a collar herHoundoom wears around its neck.
InA Giga Battle with Mega Results!, aNurse Joy with anAudino found anAudinite. She later used it and Professor Sycamore's Key Stone to Mega Evolve Audino.
InA Real Icebreaker!, anAbomasite was worn byWulfric'sAbomasnow. The Frost Tree Pokémon wears its Mega Stone on its chest, revealing it only when it is about to Mega Evolve.
InA League of His Own!, aCharizardite Y was worn byTrevor'sCharizard in a ring around its tail.
InValuable Experience for All!, aSceptilite was worn bySawyer'sSceptile on a bandanna that is tied around its neck.
InVolcanion and the Mechanical Marvel,Kimia's Shiny Gardevoir has a Gardevoirite in a necklace around its neck, which looks exactly like the necklace that Diantha's Gardevoir has.
InComing Apart at the Dreams!, a Gyaradosite was worn byLysandre's ShinyGyarados around its neck in a holder similar to the one Alain's Charizard keeps its Charizardite X in. It is unknown whether this is the same Gyaradosite that Alain found inMega Evolution Special I, or a different one.

InWhen Regions Collide!,Brock's Steelix andMisty's Gyarados wore aSteelixite and a Gyaradosite, respectively. They were used in their respective battles.
InThe Prism Between Light and Darkness!,Team Rocket Elite OfficerGozu was revealed to own anAggronite.

InFile 2: Cubone,Mr. Fuji gaveRed a Mega Stone and a Key Stone, although he did not tell Red what they truly were, merely saying that he would find out soon enough.
InFile 4: Charizard, during Red's battle againstMewtwo, one of the stones was revealed to be aCharizardite X that came from Kalos. Together, it and the Key Stone triggeredRed's Charizard's Mega Evolution, allowing it to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X and weaken Mewtwo enough to be caught by Red.

InThe Discovery,Green was shown to be in possession of aMewtwonite X, aMewtwonite Y, and aBlastoisinite. She used the last one to Mega Evolve herBlastoise during her battle againstElaine, and ended up giving the first two to her after being defeated by her.

X & Y arc
Due to Mega Evolution being a relatively unknown phenomenon, the Mega Stone concept gradually developed.Trevor was not aware of the Mega Stone thatX'sKanga possessed untilThey Have a Flare for a Li'l Kanga-Napping, when he found it in Kanga's pouch. InWhat Does Charmander Do When It Dozes, Trevor and X proved that Kanga's Mega Stone had no effect when taken out of Kanga's pouch and placed with X'sChespin. InOverthrowing a Tyrunt, Trevor and X became aware of different Mega Stones and their names when theTeam Flare Grunt they were fighting mentioned the Kangaskhanite and Manectite explicitly. Trevor and X combined their skills to defeat the grunt in battle and steal a list of Mega Stones that he had supposedly compiled.
- Korrina'sLucario possesses a Lucarionite, allowing him to Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario.
- Gurkinn'sHeracross wears his Heracronite around his horn.
- Diantha'sGardevoir wears its Gardevoirite around its head.
- Lysandre's Gyarados possesses a Gyaradosite, which a Team Flare grunt successfully dispatched toMalva.
- X'sÉlec possesses a Manectite, which is kept in a patch of fur on his chest. Élec was motivated to seek his Mega Stone after witnessing Kanga and Li'l Kanga Mega Evolve during a battle in thePrism Tower.
- X'sGarma possesses a Gengarite, which is kept in a patch of fur under his jaw.
- Tierno andShauna found multiple Mega Stones while looking for a Pinsirite and Absolite for X'sRute and Y'sSolsol. After some searching, they successfully found the correct Mega Stones and gave them to X and Y.
- X'sSalamè possesses a Charizardite X, which he keeps on the tip of his tail, hidden inside of the tail's flame.Blue'sCharizard possesses a Charizardite Y, which is also kept hidden inside of the flame on the tip of his tail. Both Charizard combined in their respective Mega Evolutions to defeatXerosic, who claimed that Team Flare found no proof that a Charizard Mega Evolves, let alone into two different forms.
- Blaine possesses both a Mewtwonite Y and Mewtwonite X, which he can use to Mega EvolveMewtwo into either of its Mega Evolutions.
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc
The Mega Stones appear or are mentioned in the following chapters:
- InLatias Flies,Latios revealed that he and Latias have obtained their respective Mega Stones.
- InClaydol Unleashes, it was revealed thatSteven had already found the Mega Stones forBlaziken,Swampert, andSceptile forSapphire,Ruby, andEmerald, respectively.
- InSalamence Evolves,Zinnia used her Salamencite to Mega Evolve herSalamence during a battle against Ruby. Using Latios's Latiosite, Ruby Mega Evolved the Eon Pokémon into Mega Latios and defeated Mega Salamence.
- InBlastoise Transforms,Red andGreen were revealed to have respectively obtained the Venusaurite and Blastoisinite, sometime before followingMaxie andArchie, who had obtained the Cameruptite and Sharpedonite, respectively. The two pairs of Trainers used the Mega Stones with their respective Pokémon to battle each other.
- InPS616,Giovanni was revealed to have obtained a Beedrillite, using it to Mega Evolve hisBeedrill as part of his explanation that the meteoroid threatening to destroy the world may be housing a Pokémon inside of it. TheMeteor Villageelder later offeredSapphire a Gardevoirite and Galladite, commenting how matching her Gallade andRuby's Gardevoir are. Ruby and Sapphire later used these Mega Stones to Mega EvolveRara andKirly during a brief battle against each other.
- InOmega Alpha Adventure 21, after destroying theGrand Meteor Delta, Ruby hadHoopa find a Diancite for Diancie to use in the Pokémon Contest Spectacular, allowing Ruby to Mega Evolve Diancie for his and Sapphire's performance.
Pocket Monsters XY: The Legend of the Pokémon Dragon King
InPocket Monsters XY: The Legend of the Pokémon Dragon King, which is centered around Mega Evolution, several characters have Mega Stones in their possession.Akira owns both a Charizardite X and a Charizardite Y,Koji owns a Garchompite, andTaichi has an Ampharosite.

- The onlyPokémon capable ofMega Evolving that does not have a corresponding Mega Stone isRayquaza.
- Certain Mega Stones inPokémon X and Y are only found in the game in which the corresponding Pokémon is not normally available, outside of theFriend Safari:
- TheAggronite andHoundoominite are only found in Y, thoughAron,Houndour, and their evolved forms are only found in the wild in X.
- TheTyranitarite andManectite are only found in X, thoughLarvitar andElectrike only found in the wild in Y.

- This unusual ordering can be seen in-game, namely by ordering the Mega Stonessatchel pocket by type order, in which the three aforementioned Mega Stones will be listed before the others introduced in Mega Dimension.
- Additionally, the internal item IDs of the three aforementioned Mega Stones are grouped with the new Mega Stones in base-game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, rather than with the Mega Stones introduced in Mega Dimension.
Naming convention
A Mega Stone's name is formed by adding a suffix to the Pokémon's name. The typical pattern is to use "-ite" when the last letter before the suffix is a consonant, and "-nite" when it's a vowel. Other endings include "-inite" forBlastoise,Houndoom, andScrafty, "-rite" forBaxcalibur, and "-tite" forGlalie. In some cases, the final letters of the Pokémon's name are dropped.
