Mega Power

- For the energy inPokémon GO, seeMega Energy.
Mega Power (Japanese:メガエネルギーMega Energy) is a type of energy in thePokémon world derived from the life-force ofAZ'sFloette. AZ designedAnge, a device withinPrism Tower, to transmit this energy throughout theKalos region to share the eternal life he had bestowed on Floette. InPokémon Legends: Z-A, Mega Power is required to activateMega Evolution andPlus Moves.
A phenomenon known asRogue Mega Evolution occurs when a high concentration of Mega Power forces awild Pokémon to undergo Mega Evolution, despite not being owned by aTrainer with aKey Stone.
Properties
Mega Power can influence the life energy of Pokémon and their surrounding areas. It manifests in various forms, such asMega Crystals andMega Shards, which can spread across multiple locations. This energy can attract Pokémon to areas rich in Mega Power, including rare and powerfulalpha Pokémon and evenLegendary Pokémon.
When used by Ange, Mega Power enables Pokémon to attainMega Evolution without the presence of aKey Stone or aMega Stone. This process, known asRogue Mega Evolution, drives the Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon into a berserk state and inflicts deep pain. Even Legendary Pokémon and Mythical Pokémon can be affected by Mega Power.
As seen withDarkrai, this ability enhances theseSpecial Pokémon's powers even further than ever before. For example, it allowed Darkrai's nightmare powers to create an entirely new dimension calledHyperspace Lumiose, which was created from a mélange of subconscious thoughts and memories from both people and Pokémon. However, due to Darkrai's inability to control this Mega Power, Hyperspace Lumiose became unstable; it began to expand and cause distortions in the real world, posing a threat of dragging the main world into its dimension if not stopped. Additionally, a Pokémon can resist Mega Power for a long period before succumbing to Rogue Mega Evolution. Mega Power can also be used to affect and cause other transformations, such as thePrimal Reversions ofKyogre andGroudon.
MegaFloette andAnge are the only entities that can naturally harness Mega Power, though they also risk losing control if they absorb an excessive amount of Mega Power.
Humans can collect Mega Power inMega Rings containing Key Stones. If a Mega Ring is full of Mega Power, and a Trainer's current Pokémon is holding its corresponding Mega Stone, activating the Mega Ring will Mega Evolve the Pokémon without causing it pain or driving it into a berserk state. When the Mega Power within the Mega Ring runs out, the Pokémon will no longer be Mega-Evolved. Withdrawing the Pokémon into itsPoké Ball will halt the use of Mega Power. Mega Rings can also be activated when only partially full of Mega Power and/or when the Pokémon is not carrying its Mega Stone, which will upgrade the Pokémon'smoves into powerfulPlus Moves.
History
3,000 years prior to the events ofPokémon X and Y,AZ'sFloette had been sent to war, resulting in the Pokémon'sdeath. AZ created a machine to revive Floette using the life-force of many other deceased Pokémon. Although the revival was successful—granting Floette eternal life and the ability toMega Evolve—AZ's rage was not settled, leading him to convert the machine into what is now theultimate weapon and using it to end the war. Floette left AZ after realizing that the life-force of deceased Pokémon was used to revive her.
2,000 years prior to the events of X and Y, a man of great power asked AZ to create a device to protect Kalos. Instead of making another device that would take from others, he built one that would share the eternal life he had bestowed on Floette. The device, "Ange", was later used as the foundation forPrism Tower. AZ planned to activate Ange after reuniting with Floette, but, when they reunited, he chose not to activate Ange since Kalos was in a time of peace. Despite this,Lysandre's activation of the ultimate weapon during X and Y inadvertently forced Ange to slowly awaken over the coming years. Lysandre intended to also use Ange in conjunction with the ultimate weapon, but abandoned the idea whenTeam Flare could not locate Floette.
Two years prior to the events ofPokémon Legends: Z-A, Ange reached a point where it began to unleash Mega Power throughout Lumiose City.Quasartico Inc. shut down Prism Tower to investigate Mega Power under the guise of renovation work. Wild Pokémon, drawn to the Mega Power, began traveling to Lumiose City in large numbers, leading to Quasartico's urban redevelopment plan.
Six months prior to the events of Legends: Z-A, high concentrations of Mega Power began forcing some wild Pokémon to undergo Rogue Mega Evolution. MegaPidgeot was the first Rogue Mega Evolution to be affected by this phenomenon. AZ and his Floette attempted to battle the Pokémon, but he was unable to keep on top of the outbreaks due to his advanced age.Urbain/Taunie stepped in for AZ and battled with Floette. Their success impressed Quasartico'sVinnie, who was also responding to the issue, and he began sharing some intelligence on Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon with the young Trainer. These events inspired Urbain/Taunie to createTeam MZ in order to help quell further Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon, later recruitingLida,Naveen, andPaxton/Harmony to the team.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A
As Paxton/Harmony and Urbain/Taunie rise up through theZ-A Royale, Team MZ also deals with the Rogue Mega Evolutions. At the same time,Zygarde tasksL to collectZygarde Cells to help Zygarde regain its strength and stop the release of Mega Power. After Paxton/Harmony defeatsGrisham, Ange begins unleashing a huge amount of Mega Power. Urbain/Taunie attempts to use Mega Floette to absorb Ange's Mega Power and turn the Pokémon into Ange Floette. The Mega Power becomes too much for Floette to handle, causing Ange to transform into Hyperrogue Ange Floette. The continuing release of Mega Power causes multiple wild Pokémon to undergo Rogue Mega Evolution and go berserk in Lumiose City. Team MZ joins forces with theFist of Justice, theRust Syndicate, theSociety of Battle Connoisseurs, and eventuallyTeam Flare Nouveau, to keep the Rogue Mega Evolutions at bay and open a path for Paxton/Harmony to reach L and Zygarde. With their combined efforts, Paxton/Harmony and Mega Zygarde destroy Ange, putting an end to the outbreak of Mega Power.
Despite Ange's destruction, a token amount of Mega Power still remains within the city, though it is not enough to cause any more Rogue Mega Evolutions. The battle with Ange and the remaining Mega Power draws in the other two members of theAura trio—Xerneas andYveltal—to Lumiose City, forcing Paxton/Harmony to capture them before they can do any harm to the city.
Mega Dimension
During the events ofMega Dimension,Team MZ learns through their Hyperspace Mission surveys that Mega Power exists in this pocket dimension. There, they fought four Rogue Megas after filling the Hyperspace points needed to encounter said Pokémon. Thanks to research by the group, along with assistance fromRust Syndicate andQuasartico Inc., it was discovered that the source of the Mega power came from a Pokémon hiding in a giant Hyperspace Portal on top of thePrism Tower inWild Zone 20. It was revealed that the Pokémon that caused it was theMythical PokémonDarkrai, which was exposed to Ange's Mega Power after living within the Prism Tower six months before the main events of the story. The exposure caused Darkrai to lose control of its nightmare powers and createdHyperspace Lumiose by accident. Darkrai did its best to resist undergoing aRogue Mega Evolution before succumbing to it during the battle with the player,Korrina andUrbain/Taunie. During the post-game of Mega Dimension, it was discovered that Mega Power can affect other transformations, as seen during the encounters withGroudon andKyogre, involving theirPrimal Reversion transformations. Finally, Team MAZ fought a Rogue MegaRayquaza before capturing it. The player also encounters several other cases of Mega Power, with six instances during side missions and Hyperspace missions. At some point, aZeraora was affected by the Mega Power, requiring the player along withEmma and Korrina to stop and capture it before it could cause havoc.
