Mega Evolution (Japanese:メガシンカMega Evolution) is anitem-inducedtransformation introduced inPokémon X and Y that affects certainPokémon. It is present in theGeneration VI andVIIcore series games, and has reappeared inPokémon Legends: Z-A and itsMega DimensionDLC. Mega Evolution has also appeared inspin-off games such asPokémon GO,Masters EX, andUNITE.
Certain Pokémon can undergo Mega Evolution by having their Trainer activate theirKey Stone while the Pokémon holds their correspondingMega Stone. There are currently 87 species of Pokémon that are known to be capable of Mega Evolution, and there are currently 93 (or 96, counting specific variations) different known Mega Evolutions.
Terminology
The termMega Evolution describes both the phenomenon[1] and the transformed Pokémon. The related verb isMega Evolve.
TheMega-Evolved Pokémon[a] are identified by having "Mega" in front of their name, such as MegaAltaria or MegaMeganium. For Pokémon with two Mega Evolutions, there are two naming conventions:
- Both Mega Evolutions are followed by either the letter X or Y: e.g., MegaCharizard X and Mega Charizard Y.
- If one of them is a Z Mega Evolution, only it will be followed by the letter Z: e.g., MegaLucario and Mega Lucario Z.
Overview

Described as "Evolution that transcends Evolution",[2] the process of Mega Evolution drastically increases aPokémon's strength, as evident by the increase inbase stats upon Mega Evolving,[3] as well as the fact that it occurs only on Pokémon that are not able to evolve any further. Despite its name, Mega Evolution differs from regular Evolution in the sense that it is only a temporary transformation. To Mega Evolve, a Pokémon requires a strong bond with itsTrainer,[4][5] and two specific items are required for the process: a correspondingMega Stone (except forRayquaza, who only needs to knowDragon Ascent), and aKey Stone for the Trainer.[6] Mega Evolution imparts a Pokémon with even greater power by unleashing its hidden energy.[7]
Along with the power boost, Mega Evolution triggers a transformation in the Pokémon's appearance and behavior, which can be minor in some cases, such asSlowbro orKangaskhan. Even though it is usually described as beneficial, some Pokémon, likeScizor orHoundoom, are said to experience discomfort while Mega Evolved. Additionally, it may change the Pokémon'sAbility to a set one (for instance, a regularVenusaur can have the standard AbilityOvergrow or theHidden AbilityChlorophyll, but a Mega Venusaur always hasThick Fat) and may also alter itstype, be it by adding, changing, or removing one (MegaAmpharos, MegaGyarados, and MegaAggron, respectively, are examples of such cases). Certain Pokémon even gain a newcategory upon Mega Evolution; e.g., Darkrai is known as the Pitch-Black Pokémon in thePokédex and the Bad Dreams Pokémon as Mega Darkrai.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces the concept ofRogue Mega Evolution (Japanese:暴走メガシンカRampaging Mega Evolution), wherebywild Pokémon undergo Mega Evolution on their own after exposition to high concentrations ofMega Power, which drives them into a berserk, painful state. TheMega DimensionDLC further introduces the concept ofZ Mega Evolution (Japanese:Zと名のつくメガシンカMega Evolution with the name Z), which mechanically differ from regular Mega Evolutions in that theirmoves have no wind-up time, with the drawback being that their Mega Power meters drain at double the speed.[8]

History
The phenomenon of Mega Evolution originated in theHoennregion, withRayquaza being the first-ever Pokémon to Mega Evolve.[9][10] According to the legend, as told byZinnia atSky Pillar and reiterated byAnsha, a huge meteoroid struck the planet 1,000 years ago, creating the crater where currently liesSootopolis City and causing natural energy to pour out of the cracks. In turn, this causedPrimalGroudon and PrimalKyogre to reawaken and fight for it over endless, world-defining clashes. The people at the time, theDraconids, could only stand by and wish for Rayquaza to appear and bring salvation, as it had done before. Responding to the Draconids' wishes, Rayquaza descended over the brilliant meteoroid and transformed into a sublime figure before quelling the conflict—in this sense, the meteoroid acted as aKey Stone, amplifying the wishes into the bond necessary to connect the people to Rayquaza, who already had the innate potential to Mega Evolve.AZ witnessed these events.[11][12] The meeting between humanity and Rayquaza allowed for the mechanism behind the phenomenon to be understood, which led to the current theory of Mega Evolution.[13]
During the events ofPokémon X and Y, the prevailing idea was that Mega Evolution was a phenomenon exclusive to theKalos region,[14] where the first-ever Mega Evolution supposedly took place after aTrainer andLucario found the first knownMega Stone and Key Stone.[15][16] In the five years leading toPokémon Legends: Z-A, however, this notion seems to have been debunked,[17] with paintings of theTower of Mastery at theLumiose Museum now claiming that Lucario was the first Pokémon to Mega Evolve in the Kalos region, specifically. Despite this,Professor Sycamore's theory on the origin of Mega Stones being a consequence of the use of theultimate weapon seems to still be upheld, at least partially, with AZ himself supporting his claims.[18] InPokémon Sun and Moon,Sina implies the phenomenon does not naturally occur in regions far from Kalos, such asAlola.[19]
According to ProfessorsCozmo and Sycamore, Mega Evolution triggers the release of the entirety of a Pokémon's hidden energy at once,[20][21] implying a strong connection to a Pokémon's own life force. This is further suggested by the fact thatInfinity Energy, the power source used as fuel for the ultimate weapon, has been confirmed multiple times to be made of the life energy of Pokémon,[22][23] and that theDevon Corporation researched into Mega Evolution in order to develop Infinity Energy. In addition, Pokémon Legends: Z-A introducesMega Power, a form of energy emitted byAnge from withinPrism Tower that, when in excessive amounts, is able to make wild Pokémon enter a frenzied, Mega-Evolved state that heavily strains its body, a process known asRogue Mega Evolution.Mable suggests thatXerneas's life energy can act similar to Mega Power, enabling the phenomenon of Rogue Mega Evolution.[24] Mega Power can be stored in aMega Ring and be used by theplayer to Mega Evolve a Pokémon or upgrade amove into aPlus Move.
InPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon,Colress questions whether or notZ-Power can surpass the Mega Ring.[25]Dexio and Sina also imply that the two are similar due both being powered up by the Trainer-Pokémon relational bond.[26]
Mega Evolution is also referenced in theOcculture magazine and in thePaldeaPokédex, where it is mentioned thatRoaring Moon resembles MegaSalamence.

In battle

In thecore series games, Mega Evolution requires the player to hold aKey Stone and aPokémon capable of Mega Evolution holding its compatibleMega Stone. OnlyRayquaza does not need a Mega Stone to Mega Evolve; instead, it must know the moveDragon Ascent. InPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the player simply needs to have the required Mega Stone in their bag, since there is no held item feature. Although most media state that a strong bond with the Pokémon and their Trainer is needed, neitherfriendship noraffection is necessary to Mega Evolve in the games.
A Mega-Evolved Pokémon has differentbase stats, with the exception ofHP, and can have a differentAbility andtype from its non-Mega-Evolved form. Every Mega-Evolved Pokémon (except for MegaAlakazam inGeneration VI) has abase stat total 100 points higher than that of its base form, though inPokémon Legends: ZA,Mawile,Medicham, andStarmie have a greater increase instats. For the former two, this is to make up for the lack of Abilities in the game (they both have Abilities that double theirAttack stats, namelyHuge Power andPure Power), while the reason in Starmie's case is presently unknown though likely similar. Mega Zygarde gains only 70 points.
In anybattle, eachTrainer may only Mega Evolve a single Pokémon once. Mega Evolution is essentially a free action a Pokémon may make in addition to its normalmove, but if a Pokémon will not use a move, it cannot Mega Evolve. Mega Evolution occursbefore most actions exceptswitching out. A Mega-Evolved Pokémon will only revert to its original state if itfaints or the battle ends; if it is switched out, it will remain Mega Evolved.
A Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve if it is being held in the airborne phase ofSky Drop. Neither volatile nor non-volatilestatus conditions such asparalysis, sleep, orinfatuation will have any effect over a Pokémon's ability to Mega Evolve, even if they result in the Pokémon not being able to attack that turn.
Mega Stones are not affected by most moves or Abilities. The movesBestow,Covet,Fling,Thief,Trick, andSwitcheroo will fail to move a Mega Stone to or from a Pokémon that could use it to Mega Evolve, and the AbilitiesMagician,Pickpocket andSymbiosis will not activate.Knock Off cannot remove a Mega Stone from a Pokémon that can use it to Mega Evolve, so its power will not be increased since it cannot remove the item. The movesEmbargo andMagic Room and the AbilityKlutz will not prevent a Pokémon from using its respective Mega Stone to Mega Evolve.
Changes in a Pokémon'sAbility will take place immediately. ASharpedo that normally hasSpeed Boost will not gain a boost inSpeed at the end of the turn it Mega Evolves, but if it uses a biting move such asCrunch that turn, it will be boosted byStrong Jaw, its Ability as Mega Sharpedo.
A transformed Pokémon (either byTransform orImposter) is unable to Mega Evolve. It will fail to Mega Evolve even if it is transformed into the correct species and it is holding the respective Mega Stone. However, it is still possible to transform into a Mega-Evolved Pokémon. The restriction of only one Mega Evolution per battle does not apply to transformed Pokémon.
Generation VI
InGeneration VI, performing Mega Evolution will not alter the turn order the turn the Pokémon undergoes Mega Evolution. A Pokémon with a lower Speed stat than their opponent will still go after them on the one turn the Mega Evolution occurs, even if their Mega Evolution increases Speed and would otherwise cause them to go first. The opposite is also true for Pokémon whose Speed stat decreases after Mega Evolution, such asGarchomp. However, turn order will be determined normally on every turn afterwards.
Otherwise, stat changes and type changes due to Mega Evolution take effect immediately and damage calculation proceeds as usual. For example, a Pokémon whose Mega Evolution has a lower baseDefense stat takes greater damage from physical moves on the turn it Mega Evolves. Likewise, the moveGyro Ball considers the Pokémon's Speed stat after Mega Evolution for damage calculation, not before. Even if a Pokémon only has an Ability such asPrankster before Mega Evolution, appropriate moves will gain priority. If a Pokémon gains Prankster upon Mega Evolution, appropriate moves will not gain priority.
When the player Mega Evolves a Pokémon for the first time since the save file is accessed, a longer animation than usual will play, showing theplayer character activating the Mega Evolution with theirMega Bracelet. On subsequent uses of Mega Evolution, a shorter animation will play, showing only the Pokémon as it Mega Evolves.
Generation VII
InGeneration VII, a Pokémon's Speed after Mega Evolution is used to determine turn order, not its Speed before. Likewise, if a Pokémon only has an Ability such as Prankster before Mega Evolution, appropriate moves will not gain priority. If a Pokémon gains Prankster upon Mega Evolution, appropriate moves will gain priority.Rayquaza cannot Mega Evolve if it is holding aZ-Crystal.
InPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as theheld item mechanic is not implemented, the player simply needs to have the compatible Mega Stone in their bag to access a Pokémon's Mega Evolution. The player can also manually pick which form Charizard or Mewtwo can become from the move menu.
Generation IX

Mega Evolution returned inPokémon Legends: Z-A after seven years of absence.
Mega-Evolved Pokémon are shown to now be surrounded by a rainbow-colored aura. It is manually activated while clicking the right thumb stick, but unlike in previous games, only when the "Mega Gauge" is full, which can be done by using moves on opposing Pokémon or by gathering orbs ofMega Power, which are dropped by opposing Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Additionally, Mega Evolution no longer lasts until the end of the battle and is now on a time limit, which can be slightly extended by gathering Mega Power orbs. Mega Stones need to be held by the affiliated Pokémon in order to allow Mega Evolution. Unlike in previous games, the player can Mega Evolve their Pokémon multiple times per battle.
Rogue Mega Evolution is a phenomenon that causeswild Pokémon to Mega Evolve on their own, without the need of a Trainer. These Pokémon are apparently in pain, much bigger than normal after Mega Evolving, and surrounded by a pink-colored aura. Calming a Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon will reward theMega Stone that is compatible with the defeated Pokémon.Team MZ is tasked with investigating this strange abnormality byQuasartico Inc.[27]
In theMega Dimension DLC, Z Mega Evolution is introduced for the first time. Z Mega Evolutions take less time to unleash moves compared to other Mega Evolutions, but burn throughMega Power much faster.[8]
Outside of battle

InPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Mega Evolution can also occur during theTalent Round ofPokémon Contest Spectaculars. If the participating Pokémon is holding its corresponding Mega Stone when itsappeal causes the audience's excitement to reach its peak, it will Mega Evolve and perform aSpectacular Talent. The Pokémon will remain Mega-Evolved for the remainder of the Talent Round.
When summoned by theEon Flute,LatiosOR/LatiasAS will Mega Evolve before the player mounts it tosoar in the sky. It will Mega Evolve even if it is not holding its corresponding Mega Stone, since the Eon Pokémon is summoned even if it is currently not in the player's game.

Pokémon UNITE

Mewtwo can becomeMega Mewtwo X orMega Mewtwo Y. This is facilitated by itsPressureAbility, which has a Mega gauge which is filled by usingbasic attacks andmoves on members of the opposing team. If the gauge is full, and Mewtwo is at leastLevel 5, it will Mega Evolve.
Unlike in thecore series, Mewtwo can only be Mega Evolved for a set amount of time, delineated by the Mega gauge draining back to empty, after which it returns to being a normal Mewtwo. However, Mewtwo can refill its Mega gauge to Mega Evolve multiple times in the same battle. When Mega Evolved, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y have different basic attacks and increased stats compared to Mewtwo.
Starting from version 1.14.1.2, Mewtwo spends some of theAeos energy it is holding when it Mega Evolves. The Mega Evolution will last longer if Mewtwo uses up more Aeos energy.
There are twoUnite Licenses for Mewtwo. While both of them allow for using Mewtwo in aUnite Battle, each one has separate characteristics. Only the Unite License X one Mega Evolves into Mega Mewtwo X, while the Unite License Y one Mega Evolves into Mega Mewtwo Y.
Starting from version 1.20.1.2, Mewtwo is required to hold its respective Mega Stone, either Mewtwonite X or Mewtwonite Y depending on the Unite License, as a held item.
In a letter from the producer released on July 15, 2025, it was announced that more Mega-Evolved Pokémon were planned to be added to the game to celebrate the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.[29]Mega Lucario was the first of these new Mega Evolutions to release, followed byMega Charizard X. More Mega-Evolved Pokémon would also be released throughout the rest of 2025, includingMega Gyarados andMega Charizard Y.[30]
Unlike Mewtwo, these Mega-Evolved Pokémon have separateUnite licenses from their base forms. When using the Unite license, the Pokémon starts off in their base form, however they can only choose one specific set of moves and have a differentAbility. When the Pokémon uses itsUnite Move, it will Mega Evolve. When Mega Evolved, various aspects of the Pokémon are changed. The Pokémon's Ability is changed and their basic attacks and/or moves are upgraded in some way. Like Mewtwo, the Mega Evolution only lasts for a limited time and the Pokémon are also required to hold their respective Mega Stones as a held item.

(Japanese:メガシンカチャンス!If the player decides to Mega Evolve their Pokémon, they will be presented with a rhythm game-esque "highway" of Mega Evolution marks and will be challenged to touch the Mega Evolution mark at the bottom of the screen as they intersect. Doing so accurately will increase the Pokémon'sMega Evolution Power (Japanese:メガシンカパワー). A total of five Mega Evolution marks will move down, and if the player is accurate enough with at least two marks, the Pokémon will Mega Evolve. Additionally, if the player uses the real-world Pokémon MEGA RING accessory, they will skip the requirement of needing at least two successful marks to activate mega evolution, and will be able to exceed the previous maximum power of Mega Evolution for an even stronger boost.
When a Mega Evolved Pokémon attacks, the Attack Roulette will apply aMega Evolution Bonus! (Japanese:メガシンカボーナス!) and upgrade the largest value to a double-size rainbow-colored space with a value equal to the Mega Evolution Power attained. The size of the rainbow-colored space will be increased even further with the Pokémon MEGA RING. A Pokémon will remain in its Mega Evolved form for as long as it is able to battle and only one Pokémon may Mega Evolve per session.

Pokémon Shuffle
- Main article:Mega Evolution (Shuffle)
Before a Pokémon's Mega Evolution can be used in Pokémon Shuffle, its respectiveMega Stone must be obtained (or inRayquaza's case, the
Meteorite). Methods to obtain a Mega Stone include:
- Defeating a Pokémon's Mega-Evolved form in aTrainer battle, usually at the end of eachmain stage area.
- Completing certain objectives onMission Cards.
- Reaching certainTrainer ranks by catching several different species of Pokémon.
- Achieving a high rank in acompetitive stage.
- Clearing certain milestone stages in anescalation battle.
The Pokémon placed in the first position (furthest to the left) when selectingSupport Pokémon will Mega Evolve after the player fills the Mega Gauge. This is filled by matching the Pokémon being Mega Evolved, or by matching Pokémon with theMega Boost(+,++)Skills who are of the sametype as the Pokémon being Mega Evolved. The size of the Mega Gauge depends on the Pokémon being Mega Evolved, with each Pokémon requiring different numbers of icons to be matched to fill its gauge. The maximum amount of icons needed to fill the gauge can be permanently decreased by using
Mega SpeedupEnhancements, with each Pokémon having a different maximum amount of Mega Speedups they can take.
Once a Pokémon is Mega Evolved, its skill is replaced by its Mega Effect for the remainder of the battle. Mega Effect varies between Pokémon.
Pokémon Rumble World
The player gains the ability to Mega Evolve their Pokémon after completing the challenge "Raid of the Mighty General", then receiving the Special Stone Shop and a Mega Key from the rewards section of the ordinary shop.Mega Stones for currently owned Pokémon can be bought and immediately attached to its corresponding Pokémon using the Special Stone Shop. The first Mega Stone of the player's choice is free (unless either theRed orBlue Orb is chosen instead) and every one after it costs 5 Poké Diamonds. During battle, Mega Evolution can be performed by tapping the Mega Evolution button using a Pokémon equipped with a Mega Stone in battle. Mega Evolution can be used again on any Pokémon in the same battle, unlike in the main games.
Mega-Evolved Pokémon revert after a completed trip, or when they are defeated or switched out. Mega Evolving will send out a shockwave that damages enemy Pokémon. This shockwave is capable of defeating and tipping over opposing Pokémon. Additionally, it also resets any negative status conditions or status changes the Pokémon had before Mega Evolving.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

Mega Evolution allows Pokémon to become more powerful, attack multiple enemies, and break down walls. To achieve Mega Evolution, the player must find an
Awakening Emera in a Dungeon. TheseEmeras can be attached to a Looplet of a Pokémon that can Mega Evolve, causing it to Mega Evolve immediately. A Looplet attached with an Awakening emera will have a rainbow glow
. Should it be given toMewtwo orCharizard, their Mega Evolution will be chosen randomly.
A bar will appear above the Mega-Evolved Pokémon after it transforms and will slowly start to fill up. As long as the bar is present, the Mega-Evolved Pokémon will keep their form even when moving to the next floor. Once the bar is filled, the Mega-Evolved Pokémon will go intoBerserk mode. In Berserk mode, the Pokémon will move around and use a powerful attack on any Pokémon surrounding it, friend and foe alike. This will go away after a while, and the Pokémon will revert to normal. When Mega Evolved, itsregular attack will get a huge boost in power and range, destroy walls, and reveal purple sparkling spots on the floor which can be picked up for an item.
Attaching an Awakening Emera to a Pokémon that cannot Mega Evolve increases its stats by a lot and give it different boosts. Pokémon that cannot Mega Evolve with an Awakening Emera attached will not go into Berserk mode.
Awakening Emeras are hard to find and appear randomly in dungeons; like other Emeras, they will disappear if they are not reached in time.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
Mega Evolution returns in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, and in this game is achieved by eating an Empowerment Seed. Mega-Evolved Pokémon also have all of the bonuses granted by the Awakened status: linked moves always result in critical hits, moves will never miss, and moves will ignore unfavorable type matchups. Compared to the Awakened status, the only additional bonus Mega Evolution grants is the potential to change a Pokémon's type and ability.
As in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, ifMewtwo orCharizard Mega Evolves, their Mega Evolution will be chosen randomly.
Some bosses will also undergo Mega Evolution:
- DuringRayquaza's rematch or Mewtwo's boss fight, both will Mega Evolve once their health drops below one half of their total. Mewtwo will Mega Evolve randomly into Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y.
Pokémon Picross
Once a player purchases a Mega Pencil fromProfessor Tetra for 500 Picrites, puzzles for Mega Evolutions can be solved. Only one Mega Evolution can be set at one time, and they cannot be brought alongside their normal forms. Their skills are higher ranked than their normal counterpart, and they can be used on larger puzzles.

Lucario,Garchomp,Gardevoir,Gengar,Charizard,Blaziken,Sceptile,Scizor,Blastoise,Mewtwo, andShadow Mewtwo are able to Mega Evolve through Synergy Burst, with Charizard and both of the Mewtwo Mega Evolving into their X forms. Mega Evolution can be triggered whenever a Pokémon capable of it has its Synergy Gauge filled up to the max during a battle. The Mega-Evolved Pokémon will revert to its regular form once it has used up all of itsSynergy power.
In addition, every time when Shadow Mewtwo is fought against in the game's story mode, it will Mega Evolve before the battle begins and stay in this state for the entire fight.
On theDragon's Nest battle stage, MegaRayquaza appears in the form of both an enormous statue alongside the battle arena and a drawing on the ground of the battle arena. On theOld Ferrum Town (Winter) battle stage, MegaSwampert appears in the form of a giant snow sculpture. Mega Rayquaza itself is also a Support Pokémon available as part of the Pokkén Tournament DX Battle Pack.

Unlike in thegames, this Mewtwo seemed to be capable of Mega Evolving without the use of aMega Stone. However, because the concept of Mega Evolution had not been announced at the time of the movie's release, this transformation remains unnamed in the movie. Some Japanese promotional material for the movie as well as itsmanga adaptation referred to it as Mewtwo'sAwakened Form (覚醒した姿).[31]

Pokémon Adventures
X & Y arc
At first, Mega Evolution was portrayed as a relatively unknown phenomenon, known only toGurkinn and his Successors. Since then, it became apparent thatTeam Flare were also after the power of Mega Evolution, with one member even compiling a list ofMega Stones that they discovered. Simultaneous Mega Evolutions can also be accomplished by a Trainer, as long as they have a Key Stone for each Pokémon they are Mega Evolving. However, doing so will cause severe mental stress on the Trainer, and they will be unable to focus on anything other than a single target until the Mega Evolution is undone.
- WhenTeam Flare membersAliana andMable arrived inVaniville Town in order to stealX'sMega Ring, the commotion caused X's babyKangaskhan,Li'l Kanga, to react with X's Mega Ring and Mega Evolve into Mega Kangaskhan, easily defeating Aliana'sPyroar and Mable'sHoundoom.
- When X and his friends were attacked by Team Flare inSantalune City,Korrina arrived and Mega Evolved herLucario into Mega Lucario to assist them.

- During a battle againstTeam Flare, Gurkinn'sGengar protected X fromCelosia'sAegislash. He helped battle against Team Flare to stop them from capturingXerneas while in tree form. He was later given to X, at which point he nicknamed him Garma. Garma has a Gengarite, which allows X to Mega Evolve him into Mega Gengar.
- While confronting Essentia, X'sRute and Y'sSolsol are given their respective Mega Stones, allowing them to Mega Evolve into Mega Pinsir and Mega Absol respectively.
- Both X'sSalamè andBlue's Charizard Mega Evolved into Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y respectively, after defeatingXerosic's Pokémon.
- After reuniting withBlaine,Mewtwo gained the ability to Mega Evolve into both Mega Mewtwo X and Y. Due to their bond, Mewtwo is able to Mega Evolve more than once per battle.

During a flashback inToughing It Out!, it was revealed that Ash foughtKorrina's MegaLucario in aWorld Coronation Series battle.
In the TCG
XY Series
- Main article:Pokémon-EX → Mega Evolution Pokémon
In the XY Series, Mega Evolution first appears in theXY set in the form ofMega Evolution Pokémon, also known asMega Evolution Pokémon-EX, a subset ofPokémon-EX. Their names have
as a prefix and
as a suffix. They additionally have a distinct stage of "MEGA", which serve as an Evolution of Pokémon-EX cards and are played by putting them on top of their corresponding Basic Pokémon-EX. Mega Evolving a Pokémon immediately ends a player's turn, unless that Pokémon has its specific Spirit LinkPokémon Tool card attached to it.
Atsushi Nagashima, the game director for the TCG, has stated that Mega Evolution is exclusive to Pokémon-EX because it would be impractical to evolve a single Pokémon three times during a game, and implementing Mega Evolution in that manner would constrain deck-building.[32] The team had considered restricting players to one Mega-Evolved Pokémon per deck, but rejected this idea, as they wanted to enable players to build decks based around Mega Evolution.[33]
Sun & Moon Series
InUnified Minds andCosmic Eclipse, twoTAG TEAMPokémon-GX were printed that feature Mega-Evolved Pokémon as one of the two members of the tag team. These cards have no special mechanics outside of those which are part of the TAG TEAM mechanics.
Mega Evolution Series
- Main article:Pokémon ex → Mega Evolution Pokémon ex
Mega-Evolved Pokémon return in the EnglishMega Evolution expansion (the JapaneseMega Brave and Mega Symphonia expansions) asMega Evolution Pokémon ex, a subset ofPokémon ex. They have a black-and-yellow
symbol next to their names. Unlike Mega Evolution Pokémon-EX from the XY series, these Pokémon ex share the same Evolution Stage as their base form — for example,Mega Gardevoir ex evolves from Kirlia and is a Stage 2 Pokémon. While they feature stronger attacks and more HP than normal Pokémon ex of their Evolution Stage, they also feature the Mega Evolution Pokémon ex rule, causing them to grant three Prize Cards when they are Knocked Out, rather than the typical two for Pokémon ex.

Trivia
- There is at least one Mega-EvolvedPokémon from everygeneration and of everytype.
- Currently,Generation III has both the most Mega Evolutions and the most Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving (with 22 and 21, respectively), whileGeneration VIII has the fewest overall (withone).
- Dragon has the most Mega Evolutions (with 17), whileRock andIce are tied for having the fewest (with five each).
- No Mega-Evolved Pokémon hasFlying as its primary type.
- Only fully evolved Pokémon are capable of Mega Evolution.
- Floette is the only exception to this, though only in itsEternal Flower form, which is incapable of evolving into or from any Pokémon.
- Charizard,Raichu,Mewtwo,Absol,Lucario, andGarchomp all have more than one Mega Evolution, accessible through distinctMega Stones.
- Similarly,Magearna andTatsugiri have different appearances while Mega-Evolved depending on their form (Magearna's regular and Original Color forms and Tatsugiri'sCurly, Droopy, and Stretchy Forms), but are nonetheless considered to have only one Mega Evolution each.
- All Pokémon that evolve with aDawn Stone are capable of Mega Evolution.
- 74 Pokémon retain their original type combination upon Mega Evolving.
- Clefable,Pinsir, Mewtwo (into Mega Mewtwo X),Meganium,Feraligatr,Ampharos,Sceptile, Chimecho,Absol (into Mega Absol Z),Lopunny, andAudino all become dual-type upon Mega Evolving.
- Aggron andGarchomp (into Mega Garchomp Z) both become single-type upon Mega Evolving.
- Charizard (into Mega Charizard X),Gyarados,Altaria,Staraptor,Barbaracle, andGolisopod all change one of their types to a new one upon Mega Evolving.
- Notably, Staraptor is the only such case in which it changes its primary type, rather than its secondary one.
- Mega Feraligatr, Mega Audino, and Mega Golisopod are the only Mega Evolutions that do not share anyweaknesses with their normal forms.
- Some Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution also have access to other forms or battle mechanics:
- Raichu andSlowbro are the only Pokémon to have a Mega Evolution and aregional form.
- Raichu, between its Kantonian andAlolan form, is the only Pokémon to have a Mega Evolution and an exclusiveZ-Move:Stoked Sparksurfer.
- The fully evolvedKanto first partner Pokémon andGengar are the only Pokémon that can both Mega Evolve andGigantamax.
- Some Mega-Evolved Pokémon have unique attributes:
- Mega Altaria is the only one with aunique type combination.
- MegaKangaskhan and MegaRayquaza are the only ones with asignature Ability:Parental Bond andDelta Stream, respectively.
- MegaZygarde is the only one whose moveset changes upon Mega Evolving, withNihil Light replacingCore Enforcer.
- Aerodactyl is the onlyFossil Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving.
- Rayquaza is the only Pokémon to not have a designated Mega Stone, as it doesn't need one to Mega Evolve in the core series games that include Mega Evolution, instead being required to knowDragon Ascent.
- This makes Rayquaza the only Pokémon that can have a different held item while Mega Evolving, since Mega Stones cannot be taken off their proper holder during battle.
- It is, furthermore, the only Pokémon to lack the message "(The opposing) <Pokémon>'s <Mega Stone> is reacting to itsKey Stone!" when it Mega Evolves, as it has the message "<player>'s fervent wish has reached Rayquaza!" instead.
- InPokémon Shuffle, Rayquaza needs the player to get theMeteorite for it to Mega Evolve.
Designs
- Design-wise, multiple Mega-Evolved Pokémon seem to incorporate traits from their previousevolutionary stages:
- Both ofRaichu's Mega Evolutions havePikachu-like features:[34] Mega Raichu X has red cheeks, bright yellow fur, and a forked zig-zag tail, while Mega Raichu Y has Pikachu's body shape, ears, and tail.
- MegaClefable has dark pink, oval cheek markings resembling those ofCleffa andClefairy.
- MegaDragonite gains features distinctive ofDragonair, such as the wings on its head and the pearl on its tail.[35]
- MegaFeraligatr's dorsal fin resembles a giganticTotodile's head, leading to it being referred to as a "Totodile mask".[36]
- MegaAmpharos's tail and head are covered in white fur,[37] which is the wool it originally had as aMareep andFlaaffy that has regrown due to the excess energy from Mega Evolution stimulating its genes.
- MegaTyranitar's chest plate, back spikes, and eye-like marking resemblePupitar.
- MegaChimecho grows a golden frame with fake eyes and arms reminiscent ofChingling.
- MegaMetagross is said to be the result of one Metagross, oneMetang, and twoBeldum linking up.
- MegaScolipede's lavender-colored armor is reminiscent ofWhirlipede.
- MegaEelektross's arms are covered by mucus in the shape ofEelektrik, named "false Eelektrik".[38]
- MegaGlimmora's main body resemblesGlimmet.
- In contrast to the otherParadox Pokémon,Roaring Moon is based specifically on MegaSalamence rather than regular Salamence.
- Roaring Moon'sPokédex entry inPokémon Violet makes a reference to Mega Evolution. A copy ofOcculture magazine inPokémon Scarlet continues the in-universe speculation with Roaring Moon and Mega Salamence; however, it says that it is unknown if there is any connection.
- An article on the English Press Website forThe Pokémon Company International on Pokémon Legends: Z-A's March 2025Nintendo Direct trailer accidentally labeled one of the files corresponding to Mega Salamence as "Roaring Moon". This was fixed later that day.[39]
Core series
- The Japanese and Korean logos forPokémon X and Y include the Mega Evolution sigil.
- At least one Mega Evolution of every type was introduced in each core series game that introduced new Mega Evolutions, with the exception of theElectric type inPokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
- If counted on its own, theMega DimensionDLC forPokémon Legends: Z-A also did not introduce a Mega Evolution of each type, with no new Mega-Evolved Pokémon beingNormal type. However, countingStaraptor (who loses itsNormal-type typing upon Mega Evolving) at least one Pokémon of every type is given a new Mega Evolution.
- Due to Mega Evolution being absent fromPokémon Sword and Shield throughPokémon Scarlet and Violet, the status of someAbilities was affected:
- Aerilate,Parental Bond, andDelta Stream became unusable despite existing in the game data.
- Refrigerate,Mega Launcher, andPixilate became the current signature Ability ofAmaura's evolutionary line,Clauncher's evolutionary line, andSylveon, respectively.
- MegaLatias and MegaLatios are programmed into Pokémon X and Y; as a result, they are not banned by the Kalos rules from battles, and theirMega Stones are not banned from trades from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to Pokémon X and Y, despite being otherwise unavailable in those games.
- In the Pokémon X and Y demo, the message "An immense new power has risen in Mewtwo!" would be displayed before Mega Evolving. In the final game, the message displayed is "<Pokémon>'s <Mega Stone> is reacting to <Trainer>'s <Key Stone item>!" Additionally, Mega Mewtwo Y is referred to as simply Mega Mewtwo.
- According toKen Sugimori in his interview in the Nintendo Dream magazine,Flygon was intended to get a Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y, but theidea was later dropped due to him experiencing an artist's block.[40]
Animated series
- If not countingmovies or theMega Evolution Specials, overall sixty-six Mega Evolutions have yet to appear in theanimated series.
- MegaSteelix, MegaAggron, and MegaKangaskhan made their animated series debut inPokémon the Series: Sun & Moon.
- MegaVenusaur, MegaAlakazam, MegaSlowbro, MegaCamerupt, and MegaAltaria, made their animated series debut inPokémon Journeys: The Series.
- MegaSableye, MegaDragonite, and MegaStarmie made their animated series debut inPokémon Horizons: The Series.
- Mega Dragonite is the only one to debut in the animated series before the official release of the game it first appears.
- In the animated series, allLegendary andMythical Pokémon that are capable of Mega Evolving can do it without the need of aMega Stone,Key Stone, orTrainer.
- As ofPokémon Horizons: The Series, the animated series pitted a Mega-Evolved Pokémon against each of the battle mechanics introduced in subsequent generations.
- InWhen Regions Collide!,Brock's MegaSteelix andMisty's MegaGyarados battled againstKiawe's Turtonator andAsh's Pikachu, respectively, with their Z-Moves.
