Legendary birds

Thelegendary birds[1][2] (Japanese:伝説の鳥ポケモンDensetsu no Tori Pokemon, "legendary bird Pokémon"), also known as thewinged mirages (Japanese:幻の翼Maboroshi no Tsubasa, "illusory wings"), are aLegendary trio consisting ofArticuno,Zapdos, andMoltres.
The mythology of the legendary birds originates from theKanto andJohto regions, although the Kantonian forms have appeared inSinnoh andKalos as well. As the first Legendary trio to be introduced, the Kantonian legendary birds set the standards for future trios; they all share similar attributes and are considered equal among themselves. Additionally, they share a secondarytype,Flying, and anAbility,Pressure. Due to its role inThe Power of One and theMystery Dungeon series,Lugia is often viewed as theleader of the trio.
First debuting inThe Crown Tundra, each of the legendary birds received aGalarian form, known collectively as thelegendary wings (Japanese:伝説の翼Densetsu no Tsubasa, "legendary wings")[3] and often referred to by Japanese fans as theGalar 3 Birds (Japanese:ガラル三鳥Galar Sanchō). These forms share the secondary type,Flying, but they each have different Abilities, and their respective primary types have changed.
Terminology
English
Articuno,Zapdos, andMoltres are often collectively described as "legendary bird Pokémon" in theirPokédex entries.[4] Uniquely, inPokémon Red, Moltres is instead described as simply a "legendary bird",[5] but when the same entry wasreused in later games this was changed to "legendary bird Pokémon".[6] The term "legendary bird Pokémon" has also been used by characters in thecore series games.[7][8]
InPokémon Sword and Shield,Peony refers to them as "legendary birds",[1] although hisLegendary Clue 3 refers to them as the "legendary wings".[3] InPokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, they are referred to as the "legendary birds".[2]
InOfficial Pokémon Special Pikachu Edition Perfect Guide, they are referred to as the "Ancient Legendary Birds".[9] In theNintendo Power guidebookPokémon Gold and Silver: Complete Pokédex, they are referred to as the "Legendary Birds".[10] Their battle theme in thePokémon Sword - Shield + Expansion Pass Super Music Collection andNintendo Music is "Battle! (The Bird Pokémon of Legend)".
InPokémon FireRed, LeafGreen,Let's Go, Pikachu!, and Let's Go, Eevee!,Bird Keeper Donald onRoute 14 refers to the legendary birds as the "winged mirages".[11]
ThePokémon Adventures chapter titleThe Winged Legends also refers to this Pokémon trio.
Additionally,Ho-Oh andLugia have been referred to as "legendary birds"[12] or "Legendary Birds".[13][14]
Japanese
The Japanese term伝説の鳥ポケモン (legendary bird Pokémon) refers to this trio in severalPokédex entries from thecore series games, as well as in the Japanese title of thePokémon Adventures chapterThe Winged Legends.
In particular, the Japanese terms伝説のポケモン (Legendary Pokémon) or伝説ポケモン (Legend Pokémon) were used in multiple Pokédex entries, but translated as "legendary bird Pokémon" in English. This applies to Articuno inPokémon X, Zapdos inPokémon Yellow,Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee!, andShield, and Moltres inPokémon Silver andSoulSilver.
Similarly, other variations were also in Japanese Pokédex entries, but translated as "legendary bird Pokémon" in English. でんせつの れいとうポケモン (Legendary Freezing Pokémon) refers to Articuno inPokémon Blue andLeafGreen, while ひのとりでんせつ (Firebird of Legend) refers to Moltres inPokémon Blue, LeafGreen, andX.
History
According to notes found in thePokémon Mansion, the legendary birds were first discovered by and recorded by the Pokémon Research Team.[15]Blaine andMr. Fuji also recorded notes and sightings of the winged mirages.
InGalar'sCrown Tundra, the original legendary birds were thought to periodically travel there, but it is eventually discovered that the trio of birds seen there were actuallyGalarian forms of the original trio, that travelled all over the world but annually flew back to the Crown Tundra'sDyna Tree to feed on itsBerries and even fight over the Berries amongst themselves. Not much is known about the relation between the Galarian and Kantonian birds, but theirPokédex entries imply that the Galarian ones were either the birds' original appearances or that they are unrelated entirely.
Pokémon movies
InThe Power of One,Professor Oak states that Articuno and Moltres's combined powers of ice and fire are the source and cradle of the oceans, and that Zapdos's electric energy creates the currents and streams, which is why the three ancient creatures are closely bound to the guardian of the ocean,Lugia. It is also the only one capable of stopping the trio's conflict, which causes great natural disaster all over the planet.

The Power of One

- Main article:Legendary birds (M02)
The legendary birds appeared inThe Power of One, where they were central to the movie's plot. In it, they were described as the titans offire, ice, andlightning, guardians overFire,Ice, andLightning Islands. They were sought after by a collector,Lawrence III, who intended to use them to draw outLugia.
Lawrence III succeeded in capturing Moltres first, using strange, electrified rings to contain it, rather than aPoké Ball. He then subsequently kept it on his ship as he hunted out Zapdos, who used Moltres's absence from Fire Island as a signal that it would be able to expand its territory. Shortly after,Ash andhis friends discovered this to be the case. Lawrence III captures Zapdos as well, drawing the group in as well, due to their boat's similar size to the birds. The group escaped, and, using their Pokémon, managed to free Zapdos and Moltres. The legendary birds have been infuriated, however, and began fighting, destroying Lawrence III's airship just as he attempted to capture Articuno. The three continued their fight outside, and finally, Lugia revealed itself.
The three birds teamed up to take Lugia down, but it recovered and retured to the surface. As Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres continued to fight, Ash was tasked to bring the treasures from their respective islands toShamouti Island's shrine in order to help Lugia to quell the fighting and prevent the destruction of the world. Though he almost didn't make it, Ash managed to do so, and the birds made peace, returning to their islands.

Trivia
- In the localized versions ofGeneration I games, aBird Keeper inRoute 14 states: "The 3legendary Pokémon are all birds of prey." However, in the Japanese dialogue, he simply says that they are three birds.
- InGeneration I, the legendary birds all had different basestat totals—Articuno's was 485, Zapdos's was 490, and Moltres's was 495. SinceGeneration II, when theSpecial split occurred, all three legendary birds have had an equal base stat total of 580.
- In the English dub ofThe Power of One, these Pokémon are referred to as "titans".
- InThe Official Pokémon Encyclopedia, they are referred to as the Titan trio.
- Although legendary Pokémon are said to be incapable of breeding,Pokémon Snap shows all three birds being born from eggs.
- The last part of each of the members' names is a number in theSpanish language—one (Articuno), two (Zapdos), and three (Moltres)—and it reflects theirNational Pokédex order.
- Starting withPokémon Platinum, they are the only Legendary trio where all three members are either stationary orroaming as wild Pokémon in the various games they appear in. In comparison, thelake guardians have one of their trio who roams, whileSuicune of theLegendary beasts roams inPokémon Gold and Silver, but is stationary inPokémon Crystal, as well as inPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
- Since there were only four tracks of battle music in the Generation I games (wild, Trainer, Gym Leader/Elite Four, and Champion), normal wild battle music is played when the legendary birds are encountered. InPokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, a special remix of the normal wild battle theme is used for the legendary birds and theLegendary beasts when encountered. However, the legendary birds have never had a battle theme composed specifically for them, unlike other Legendary trios.
- InThe Crown Tundra, their Galarian counterparts get their own battle theme.
- TheShiny colorations of the legendary birds in their regional forms are colored to match the normal coloration of the Kantonian ones.
- All of the legendary birds are capable of learningAgility naturally; however, fromPokémon Diamond and Pearl toPokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they were able to learn this move at different levels.
- Excludingroaming, Moltres is the only one of the trio to change location, and it does so twice.
- The legendary birds can be caught in the most games of all Legendary Pokémon, as they can be caught in 21core series games in Japan, 20 internationally, 15 in Korea, and 12 in Hong Kong and Taiwan, as of August 4, 2024.
- Although the Galarian birds are classified asGalarian forms, they are migratory and only visitGalar'sCrown Tundra once per year.
- Kantonian Zapdos has atype advantage over Articuno and Moltres because itsElectric type is strong against theirFlying type. Conversely, Galarian Zapdos is at a disadvantage against Galarian Articuno and Moltres because itsFighting type is weak to Galarian Articuno'sPsychic moves andFlying-type moves from both Articuno and Moltres.
- Although Galarian Zapdos resistsDark-type moves and Fighting is normally strong against Dark types, because Galarian Moltres is also a Flying type, it takes normal damage from Fighting moves instead of super effective damage. Galarian Zapdos is also weak to Flying-type attacks due to its Fighting type, so it ends up at a disadvantage overall.
- Kantonian Zapdos is the only one of its trio to not have a double weakness toRock. It is also the only one to not have any double weakness.
- The legendary birds are the onlyLegendary Pokémon to haveregional forms.
- The Pokédex entries for theGalarian legendary birds imply that their similarities to the Kantonian legendary birds may be coincidental, and they might be completely different Pokémon that were given the same names based on their physical appearance. However, they are still categorized as the same species.
- The Galarian legendary birds are the only regional forms available inPokémon Scarlet and Violet that are unable to have the Scarlet and Violetorigin mark.
- The legendary birds are the only Legendary Pokémon available inPokémon X and Y to not be available inPokémon Legends: Z-A.
