TheLegendary Beasts[2][3] orTrio of Sacred Legends[4] (Japanese:伝説(でんせつ)三聖獣(さんせいじゅう)[4][5][6]Legendary Three Sacred Beasts;三聖獣(さんせいじゅう)[7][8][9][10][11]Three Sacred Beasts) are atrio[12] ofLegendary Pokémon consisting ofRaikou,Entei, andSuicune. They werefirst discovered in theJohto region.

They were also referred to as theBeasts of Legend inOfficial Pokémon Crystal Version Perfect Guide.[13]

InPokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the members of this group are known as Raikou the Lightning,[9] Entei the Volcanic,[10][5] and Suicune the Gale[9] (Japanese: イナズマのライコウ・カザンのエンテイ・シップウのスイクンLightning's Raikou;Volcano's Entei;Gale's Suicune).

Ho-Oh is often viewed as theleader of the trio as it is the one that resurrected them in the past. In most of their appearances, they are usually seenroaming the region in the first four generations. They share anAbility,Pressure; and aHidden Ability,Inner Focus. Suicune is the first member of a legendary trio to be agame mascot forPokémon Crystal. Suicune is usually the main focus of the trio in media.

History

"Imagined" Legendary beast from theScarlet Book

The legend of the Legendary beasts is introduced inGeneration II. The legend was also expanded in both the remakes and thePokémon Generations episodeThe Reawakening. In theJohtoregion, 150 years ago, three unnamed Pokémon (either having always been aRaikou,Entei, andSuicune, or starting out as different Pokémon entirely) were present inside the famousBrass Tower. One day, a lightning bolt hit the tower, starting a huge fire in it, which would be later put out by a sudden downpour. The three Pokémon perished in the fire, but as the sun rose,Ho-Oh appeared, granting the trio new life as Legendary Pokémon. The three nameless Pokémon were reborn as Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Additionally, theWise Trio says that Suicune is the closest of the Legendary beasts to Ho-Oh and shares a cooperative bond with theUnown.[14]

The three were to be said to represent the lightning, fire, and rain that transformed the Brass Tower into its current state. At first, the humans ofEcruteak City were in awe of this miracle, before that awe changed into great fear of Ho-Oh's power to manipulate life. This fear leads to the townspeople threatening violence on the revived trio and Ho-Oh. Instead of retaliating back, the trio and Ho-Oh disappeared into the wilderness. Initially, the trio never returned out of fear of the violence the humans would inflict on them. At some point, they returned back to Brass Tower, awaiting a time when they could trust humans again.

InPokémon Scarlet, a sketch artist from the Area Zero expedition was inspired by theParadox Pokémon within theGreat Crater of Paldea and drew an imaginary Pokémon resembling all three Legendary beasts, as well as, incidentally,Walking Wake,Gouging Fire, andRaging Bolt. This took place 200 years prior to Pokémon Scarlet, possibly predating the burning of the Brass Tower, which was 150 years before the Johto games. TheViolet Book instead depicts a creature resembling theSwords of Justice.

Suicune, Entei, and Raikou are said to be related to theParadox Pokémon, Walking Wake, Gouging Fire, and Raging Bolt, respectively. Conflicting accounts claim they're the beasts's ancestors from the ancient past or versions of them from parallel timelines.

Entei is a storyline boss shortly afterward, effortlessly defeating Buizel despite the latter's type advantage, then attacking the player and partner, whose scarves respond to the dire situation by temporarily changing them to their fully evolved forms. Much later, after the player, the partner, and most of the Expedition Society have been petrified, they encounter all three Legendary beasts in the Voidlands. The nameless Pokémon that would become the Legendary beasts

The Legendary beasts appeared inThe Reawakening, where they were shown in a tale told byEusine. Long ago, they were three nameless Pokémon that lived inEcruteak City. During a lightning storm, they were inside theBrass Tower when it got struck by lightning. The tower went up in flames and the three Pokémon perished. After the fire went out however,Ho-Oh appeared from the sky and revived the three Pokémon using its mystical powers. The Pokémon gained new life as Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, much to the shock of the citizens of Ecruteak City, who found their revival to be unnatural. They used violence against the three Pokémon, after which they fled Ecruteak, never to been seen again. According to Eusine, they completely lost trust in humanity. However, Suicune still showed itself to Eusine when he visited the Burned Tower.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Like in the games, the Legendary beasts were saved byHo-Oh when theBrass Tower burned down and became the Burned Tower. Ho-Oh was caught by theMasked Man nine years before theGold, Silver & Crystal arc; the Legendary beasts managed to separate Ho-Oh from the Masked Man but were imprisoned in ice mirrors beneath the Burned Tower. They were freed byYellow, who had been visiting theJohto region with her uncleWilton.

The Legendary beasts roamed Johto in search for their companions. Because of Suicune's status as agame mascot, it was given more screen time than Raikou and Entei. They reunited for a short while inReally Raikou and Entirely Entei II, before finally finding their companions, all of which wereKantoGym Leaders. Suicune acceptedMisty as a companion, after challenging her to a battle beneath theTohjo Falls. Raikou choseLt. Surge, who had faced the Masked Man before. Entei foundBlaine, who was looking for its flames of life to cure his tainted right arm. They joined forces to confront the Masked Man at theIndigo Plateau, who had captured Ho-Oh once again. However, the Masked Man overcame them and set off forIlex Forest for his ultimate goal. The Legendary beasts found a new companion inCrystal, and took her to Ilex Forest to join the otherPokédex holders in the battle against the Masked Man. Raikou was passed toGold, and Entei toSilver.

At the end of the arc, the Legendary beasts set out to roam the land again in search for Ho-Oh.

Emerald arc

One of Legendary beasts, Raikou, was later caught byAnabel in Johto for use at theBattle Frontier, where it also participated in a confrontation against a new villain,Guile Hideout.

Trivia

The Legendary beasts andEusine, as seen in thegame intro ofPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
  • Raikou,Entei, andSuicune were designed byMuneo Saitō.[15]
  • InPokémon Gold and Silver, the Legendary beasts had the same front sprite in both versions, and were some of the few Pokémon with this distinction.
  • Many refer to them asLegendary cats orLegendary dogs, depending on if they personally see feline or canine features in the individual Pokémon. However, they are more likely based on many different creatures and mythological deities, such asRaijū, theChinese guardian lions, and theqilin. On top of that, they also seem to have been stylized to fit the classic idea of threejungle cats orjungle beasts—thetiger, lion, andcheetah (orleopard). They may also be based on the Three Celestial Guardians used infeng shui: thePi Yao,Chi Lin, andFu Dog.
    • In the Spanish version of thePokémon Generations episodeThe Reawakening, they are referred to as "perros legendarios" (legendary dogs). However, no equivalent group name is used in the English and Japanese versions of this episode.
  • The Legendary beasts are the first Legendary Pokémon to get a special battle theme, though they first got it inPokémon Crystal. InHeartGold and SoulSilver, each Legendary beast was given their own remixed version of the original Legendary beast music fromGeneration II. The three songs are similar, but use different instruments: Suicune's uses bells, Raikou's uses an electric guitar, and Entei's uses synthesized music. However, they will share the same theme in the said game ifGB Sounds is turned on.
  • A representation of the Legendary beasts was used as the set symbol for theNeo Revelation card expansion.
  • The initials for the three beasts are the same as the initials for the threeHoenn-based games:Ruby, Sapphire, andEmerald. In addition, their battle themeexists in Ruby and Sapphire's coding, although it is unused.
  • The order that the beasts appear in the National Pokédex is the order of the events that happened at the Burned Tower: the lightning that started the fire (Raikou), the fire that consumed the Brass Tower (Entei), and the rain that quenched the fire (Suicune).
  • The trio shares their heights with three out of four members ofSwords of Justice:
    • Cobalion and Entei are both 6'11" (2.1 m).
    • Virizion and Suicune are both 6'07" (2.0 m).
    • Terrakion and Raikou are both 6'03" (1.9 m).
