Biology

Leafeon attacking with its sharp tail

Leafeon is a mammalian, quadrupedalPokémon. Its body is tan with dark brown paws. It has a multitude of small green sprouts growing all over its legs, chest, and back, with the longest one on its head, in front of four tan tufts of fur. Leafeon's green ears and tail resemble tattered leaves. It has brown eyes and a small, brown nose.

The cells in Leafeon's fur are closer in nature to a plant's cells than an animal's, which allows it to use photosynthesis and purify the air around it while sleeping under the sunlight; it gets its energy this way instead of eating. It is a pacifistic Pokémon who prefers not to fight, though it will sharpen its hard, leafy tail to protect its friends from harm. The tail's sharpness is said to exceed that of ahuman-crafted sword, being able to cut down a large tree with one hit. Leafeon's aroma is similar to fresh grass in its youth; as it ages, this fragrance bears more of a resemblance to fallen leaves. This aroma is favored inGalar, where it is used to create a popular perfume. It lives quietly in lush forests that have clean rivers. As mentioned inPokémon Sleep, the air produced by a sleeping Leafeon can help any Pokémon sleep deeply.[1]

Evolution data

Leafeon evolves fromEevee when exposed to aMoss Rock or, fromGeneration VIII onwards, when exposed to aLeaf Stone. Eevee will always evolve into Leafeon when leveled up near a Moss Rock, even if theevolutionary conditions for it to evolve intoEspeon,Umbreon, orSylveon have also been met.

The Moss Rock is not present inPokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, so Eevee cannot evolve into Leafeon in those games, as well asPokémon Sword and Shield andPokémon Scarlet and Violet, although Eevee can evolve into Leafeon with the Leaf Stone in those games instead. Eevee will never evolve into Leafeon inPokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as Leafeon is not present in those games.

Trivia

Concept and development

Rīfi, an early version of Leafeon

Leafeon was designed byAtsuko Nishida.[2][3] During thedevelopment ofGeneration II, the earliest iteration of it was a quadrupedalGrass-typePokémon with root-like feet, several markings across its body, and a short fringe above its eyes. Leafeon's eventual redesign forGeneration IV is evidenced by its early Japanese name in the data ofPokémon Battle Revolution having the same name as this early iteration from Generation II, known as Rīfi(リーフィ).[4]

Origin

Leafeon bears many similarities in appearance to cats and foxes, as well as itscry, which is similar to a cat's meow or a fox's chirp. Its coloration appears to be inspired by the markings found on animals like theSiamese cat or thered fox. As its body consists of leaves, it also has traits ofplants, such as the ability to utilizephotosynthesis. The brown marks on its paws give the appearance that they were buried.

Name origin

Leafeon may be a combination ofleaf andeon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally).Eon is a suffix allEeveeEvolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.

Leafia may be derived fromleaf.
