Pokémon world locations

Lake Verity (Japanese:シンジ() and心情湖Lake Shinji)[a] is a location in theSinnohregion, and part of theObsidian Fieldlands in theHisui region. At the center of the lake, there is a cave that is namedVerity Cavern (Japanese:シンジ湖の空洞Lake Shinji Hollow), which is home to theLegendary PokémonMesprit, the guardian of the lake and the Being of Emotion.

Thelake, along withLake Valor andLake Acuity, is tied tothe myth of the creation of thePokémon world, specifically the creation ofspirit. According toVolo, it was formed from the crater of a volcano.

InPokémon Diamond and Pearl andBrilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, theplayer and theirrival,Barry, come here after watching reports of aRed Gyarados on television in hopes of seeing something similarly amazing. This is also where the player will receive theirfirst partner Pokémon in Sinnoh after being attacked byStarly. InPlatinum, the player and Barry instead come here to catch the Legendary Pokémon of the lake, only to meetCyrus for the first time. They will then leave when Barry realizes that they don't have anyPoké Balls. The first partner Pokémon will instead be obtained onRoute 201. During the main story,Mars ofTeam Galactic raids the lake and captures Mesprit for the purpose of creating theRed Chain.

InPokémon Legends: Arceus, the player,Volo, andAdaman orIrida come here duringMission 14: "The Trial of Lake Verity" to obtainMesprit's Plume.

Dawn encounteringMesprit

InFollowing A Maiden's Voyage!,Dawn andPiplup stopped by Lake Verity while on their way back toProfessor Rowan's Research Lab inSandgem Town. At the lake, they briefly encountered a mysterious figure flying over the water's surface. Dawn would eventually learn that the figure she saw was in fact theLegendary Pokémon said to be the guardian of the lake,Mesprit.

InStrategy Begins at Home!,Sayer hiredTeam Rocket tofish in the lake forGoldeen for their Goldeen Scoop booth at theTwinleaf Festival.

InThe Needs of the Three!, it was explained that Lake Verity, and indeed all three of Sinnoh's lakes, are the entrances to anotherdimension where thelake guardians reside, and they do not actually live in the lakes themselves. Later, a pink whirlpool appeared in the lake due toPokémon Hunter J dropping the Galactic Bomb intoLake Valor. From this portal emerged Mesprit, who quickly teleported away to Lake Valor. This was witnessed byProfessor Rowan and hisassistants.

Before Pearl found him again, Diamond had seena strange, bright light in the middle of the lake and passed out.

InHurrah for Rapidash, Diamond parted ways with Pearl andPlatinum in order to protectMesprit fromTeam Galactic. However,Mars managed to reach the lake before him inYikes, Yanmega! II, and proceeded to takeDiamond's mother hostage. While Diamond was able to help his mother escape, he was unable to stop Team Galactic from capturing Mesprit inMixing It Up with Machamp, following its emergence after the Galactic Bomb wasdetonated atLake Valor. Determined to save Mesprit, Diamond was able to sneak aboard the shuttle carrying Mesprit, and traveled to theTeam Galactic HQ aboard it.

InTeam Galactic's Ultimate Warrior,Cyrus andTeam Galactic were seen at Lake Verity, succeeding in capturingMesprit and bringing it to theTeam Galactic HQ.

Trivia

  • After the battle between the player and the wild Starly inPokémon Diamond and Pearl, a square of tall grass can be seen to have disappeared when the player and their friend walk out of the tall grass. It is where the briefcase which was taken away byDawn/Lucas was originally. The square remains inPokémon Platinum even though the same event did not occur in the game.
  • At each of Sinnoh's lakes, aTM can be found containing a powerful move of a differenttype. Lake Verity's TM is theFire-typeTM38 (Fire Blast).
  • Lake Verity's Japanese name shares the same Japanese name ofPaul.
  • InPokémon the Series, Lake Verity is much smaller than its game counterpart or even other lakes in the series, instead resembling more of a large pond.
  • In the scripted battle against a wildStarly, if the player's Pokémon's HP becomes low enough that its HP bar turns red, the wild Starly will flee. This attempts to prevent the player from losing the battle.[1] In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl only, both Pokémon are also prevented from scoringcritical hits.
    • If the player's first partner Pokémon faints in this battle (which is possible if the player's Pokémon takes enough damage to knock it out while its HP bar is still yellow),the game will freeze.[2]
    • InPokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the amount of HP required to force the wild Starly to flee is raised to half of that of the player's starter. This was likely done as a countermeasure to the above-mentioned game-freezing oversight in the original games.[3]
  • At the beginning of the game, the water level is too low to surf. After the events ofLake Valor, the water level rises due toMesprit coming out of hiding, allowing the player to surf.
