Kyogre (Japanese:カイオーガKyogre) is aWater-typeLegendary Pokémon introduced inGeneration III.

While it is not known toevolve into or from any other Pokémon, Kyogre can undergoPrimal Reversion and becomePrimal Kyogre if it holds theBlue Orb.

Along withGroudon andRayquaza, Kyogre is one of thesuper-ancient Pokémon.

Kyogre is thegame mascot ofPokémon Sapphire Version and itsremake,Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, appearing on the boxart of both games in its normal form and Primal state, respectively. In these games, as well as inPokémon Emerald Version, Kyogre is sought byTeam Aqua as a major part of their plot to expand the world's waters.

Biology

Kyogre encased in stone as it slumbers

Kyogre is a massive,whale-likePokémon with two big pectoral fins, each with four white square-shaped nails. It has a deep blue body and a white chin area with two small spikes protruding under it. Above each eye are two white, oval-shaped spots. Kyogre has red stripes around its chin, eyes, dorsal fins, and torso. These stripes glow when Kyogre is brimming with power. The tail is tattered with four trailing parts, with the inner ones being smaller than the outer. Its eyes are small, yellow, and shadowed with black.

Kyogre is believed to be the personification of the sea itself, and is described in inlegends and myths as the "maker of oceans" who created theworld's oceans and expanded them by generating heavy tidal waves. It is also capable ofsummoning intense rainstorms to cloak the world's entire sky and weakenFire-typemoves; because of this, it was hailed as a savior for quenching areas of the world plagued with droughts. As asuper-ancient Pokémon, it is one of the longest-lived species, thought to have lived for thousands of years. Kyogre can fly when there is no water for it to swim in. Though normally a calm and helpful Pokémon, in olden times, it encountered its rival,Groudon, and for years, the two engaged in a cataclysmicbattle for dominion of the world. They were stopped by the intervention ofRayquaza,[1][2] who sealed Kyogre withinSeafloor Cavern,[3] where it has since slumbered in the marine trench. During its sleep, Kyogre's body is encased in a layer of rock that will be shattered once it is awakened by theRed orBlue Orb. It lives in thesea. Kyogre lovesKyogre Treats made bySnacksworth, who once encountered it in the past. As seen withHyperspace Primordial Sea, Kyogre's subconcious takes the appearance of theCave of Origin.

Kyogre is theonly known Pokémon capable of learning the moveOrigin Pulse. Prior toGeneration V,Drizzle was itssignature Ability.

Forms

Kyogre can undergoPrimal Reversion and become Primal Kyogre. It retains its general body structure, but it grows larger and its main skin color becomes a darker shade of blue. The red markings along its body become light blue, and its eyes glow yellow with orange irises and orange-red pupils. The markings on its pectoral fins slightly change to formα symbols, which connect to its outer nails with red markings connecting the inner nails. Every part of its skin that was originally white becomes clear and translucent, with the large ovals on its head now connected to clear markings stretching from its tail to its forehead, where anotherα symbol is formed. The trailing parts of its tail grow longer and gain translucent webbing, and the areas between its pectoral fin markings also become clear. The translucent parts of its body reveal organ-like structures that glow with a mysterious light; it has a large "organ" at the center of its body, two smaller ones aligned with the large oval markings, and two more located in its pectoral fins.

Primal Kyogre is said to be Kyogre's true, original, and fully powered form, having received its name from the ancient people of theHoennregion who it tormented in the past.[4] The energy that fills it spills forth as seawater, which its body composition is nearly identical to, while its skin glows similarly to that of sapphire.[5] Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon fought each other over the natural energy that was abundant in the primal age millennia ago; one of their clashes lasted for 20 days straight and threatened to disrupt the planet's balance and destroy it before Rayquaza stopped them.[6][7] Research conducted by theWeather Institute reveals that Primal Kyogre can annihilate all life before resetting the planet.[8] It was formed from the natural primal energy that existed in Hoenn's ancient past, which it has to feed on so it can maintain its transformation in the present day[9] after it was undone byMega Rayquaza.[10] Due to the lack of natural energy in the surface, it is forced to find either a source underground, such as the stones in the Cave of Origin, or the Blue Orb, which contains the remaining energy of the primordial world, allowing it to undergo Primal Reversion. With itsweather-manipulating powers, Primal Kyogre can summon storms which drastically raise the sea level and outrightnullify Fire-type moves rather than simply weaken them. In theMega Evolution Pokédex Short, it is said to have widened the seas by a large margin simply by taking a swim.

Primal Kyogre is theonly known Pokémon that can havePrimordial Sea as anAbility.

Trivia

Marina's Kyogre costume

Origin

Kyogre may be a personification of the Earth's oceans. Its conflict with Groudon is similar to that ofLeviathan andBehemoth, who would start a battle that would kill them both at the end of time. Like Kyogre, Leviathan is associated with the sea, and the Hebrew word for Leviathan is now used for whales in Modern Hebrew, which may be why Kyogre's appearance also draws inspiration fromcetaceans, primarilytoothed whales. However, Leviathan does not resemble Kyogre in traditional depictions.

The patterns on Kyogre and Primal Kyogre's fins appear similar to the first letter of Greek alphabet, alpha, which might signify the origin of life, believed to have started in the oceans. It might also signify the opposition toGroudon'somega.

Name origin

Kyogre is a combination of 海kai (sea) or 海王kaiō (king of the sea) andogre.[11] It may also involveorca (killer whale).
