Knock Off (Japanese:はたきおとすKnock Off) is a damage-dealingDark-typemove introduced inGeneration III. It isTM181 inPokémon Scarlet and Violet andTM045 inPokémon Legends: Z-A.
Effect
Knock Off inflicts damage and knocks off the target'sheld item if it has one.
If anExp. Share orLucky Egg was knocked off, the Pokémon will still gainexperience accordingly. If anAmulet Coin was knocked off, the Pokémon will still gainprize money accordingly. Knock Off can knock offMail (unlike other item-manipulating effects, which often cannot affect Mail).
Generations III and IV
If the Pokémon's item is knocked off, that Pokémon's held item becomes unusable for the rest of the battle (even if switched out), but still remains visible on the status screen. If a Pokémon has a knocked off item, it cannot gain or lose an item:Trick andSwitcheroo always fail if either Pokémon has a knocked off item,Thief andCovet cannot steal an item from a knocked off Pokémon, andRecycle always fails when used by the Pokémon.
If Knock Off triggers an item (such as aFocus Band,Focus Sash, orColbur Berry) after the attack, that item activates before Knock Off can knock it off (in the case of the Focus Band, which is not consumed, it will be removed after its effect has activated).
Even if the user faints when using Knock Off (such as due to the target'sRough Skin or user'sLife Orb), it still knocks off the target's held item.
Knock Off cannot knock off an item from Pokémon with theSticky Hold Ability or if it hits a Pokémon'ssubstitute. Knock Off cannot knock off any item from a Pokémon withMultitype or aGriseous Orb from any Pokémon.
Knock Off can be used as the second move of aPokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point ifFake Out was used in the previous turn.
Generation V
Knock Off now removes the held item rather than rendering it unusable; this means that the Pokémon can obtain another item if its held item is removed by Knock Off. However,Recycle still cannot recover an item removed by Knock Off.
Wild Pokémon cannot remove held items of the player's Pokémon.
If the user faints due to the target's Ability (Rough Skin orIron Barbs) or heldRocky Helmet, it cannot remove the target's held item. However, Knock Off will still remove the target's held item if the user faints due to its own heldLife Orb. If Knock Off causes a Pokémon with theSticky Hold Ability to faint, it can now remove that Pokémon's held item.
Knock Off can now remove a held Griseous Orb from any Pokémon other thanGiratina. Knock Off cannot remove aPlate if the target isArceus (Multitype has no effect on Knock Off), and cannot remove aDrive if the target isGenesect. If those Pokémon use Knock Off on a target holding this item (whenever or not the target benefits from holding the item), the item will not be removed.
Generation VI onwards
Knock Off'spower has been increased from 20 to 65.
Knock Off cannot remove aZ-Crystal from any Pokémon, aMega Stone orOrb if the target could use it toMega Evolve or undergoPrimal Reversion, amemory if the target isSilvally, aRusted Sword fromZacian, aRusted Shield fromZamazenta, any of theHearthflame,Wellspring, orCornerstone Masks fromOgerpon, or aBooster Energy from anyParadox Pokémon (excludingKoraidon andMiraidon), even if it hasn't consumed the item because its Ability triggered from the appropriate weather or terrain condition instead.
If Knock Off is used on a Pokémon that is holding an item that can be knocked off, its base power will be boosted by 50%. Knock Off cannot remove the held item of a target that hasSticky Hold or if it hits the target'ssubstitute, but the bonus damage will apply anyway. If used on a Pokémon weak to Dark-type moves holding aColbur Berry, the Colbur Berry will still be eaten, but Knock Off will get the damage boost regardless. If used on a Pokémon that cannot lose its held item — such as a Pokémon holding its correspondingMega Stone — this move will not receive the boost. Additionally, the boost will also not be applied if the user of Knock Off targets a Pokémon holding an item that would not be able to be removed from it.
InPokémon Sword and Shield, when used in aMax Raid Battle, Knock Off fails completely, without even dealing damage.
InPokémon Scarlet and Violet, when used on an ally in aTera Raid Battle, Knock Off deals damage, but does not knock off the target's item. However, if used on a raid boss that is holding an item, the held item will be knocked off as normal.
