Kartana (Japanese:カミツルギKamiturugi) is a dual-typeGrass/SteelPokémon introduced inGeneration VII.

It is not known toevolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is one of theUltra Beasts and is codenamedUB-04 Blade (Japanese:UB04 Slash) by theInternational Police.

Biology

Kartana's body is made out of material similar to paper, but sharp enough to cut anything

Kartana is a smallUltra Beast that resembles anorigami human. It appears to be folded out of a sheet of paper which is white on one side and orange on the other. Its head is folded slightly inside its body and has a four-sided star in the center, but no discernible facial features. Its head opens and closes similar to a paper fortune teller and seems to function as both an eye and a mouth. On top of its head are two short antennae or horns that are wider at the top. It has long, thin arms that resemble katanas with a yellow, sheath-like structure around the upper area. The sheath connects to a red, slightly raised hexagon on its torso. Extending up and out from the base of each sheath are three yellow projections that are nearly as long as its arms. Its legs appear creased with areas of red visible along the edges. Kartana's light, thin build makes it one of thelightest Pokémon in existence.

Kartana live in another world namedUltra Forest. According toWicke from theAether Foundation, Kartana's most distinctive feature is its thin and razor-sharp body, of which every edge has as harsh a cutting edge as any well-honed blade. The edges on its arms are particularly in a class of their own. Any opponent who tries to attack it will be cut down with a single strike of its blades. Its thin body also allows it to evade attacks by dancing lightly out of the way.[1] This is a very dangerous creature, considering its excellent offensive and defensive capabilities, but due to the nature of its body, it is also highly vulnerable to fire and moisture.

Wicke also claims that like all Ultra Beasts, Kartana storesZ-Power, the same energy possessed byTotem Pokémon, within its body, which takes the form of a red, flaring aura.[2] In thePokémon the Series: Sun & Moon episodeLiving on the Cutting Edge!, Kartana can openUltra Wormholes and has the ability tospeak the human language, albeit in reverse.

Major appearances

Kartana (anime)

Kartana debuted inLiving on the Cutting Edge!, appearing inAlola through anUltra Wormhole. It started slicing through various objects acrossMelemele Island, promptingAsh andhis classmates to embark on their eighth mission as theUltra Guardians. Their efforts tocatch it ended in failure and were soon overshadowed by a meteor falling towards thePokémon School. Unexpectedly, Kartana sliced the meteor into small, harmless pieces before it could hit the building, saving the school from being damaged. Afterwards, it created itself a new Ultra Wormhole by repeatedly slicing the air in rapid succession, and then returned itself home.

Trivia

Origin

Kartana may be based onorigami andsamurai. In particular, it may be based onnoshi, a ceremonial origami attached to gifts for congratulatory occasions as a token of good luck, orshikigami, paper figurines cut into the shape of a person or animal and imbued with spiritual power, often used by priests to ward off negative energy. Its sharp, paper-like qualities may be a reference topaper cuts. Kartana also possibly draws inspiration fromIssun-boshi, further tying it and Celesteela as counterparts.

Name origin

Kartana may be a combination ofkatana andcard, art, orcharta (Latin for "paper"). It may also involveCurtana (British ceremonial sword used at the coronations for kings and queens) and कर्तनkartana (Sanskrit for "cutting").

Kamiturugi may be a combination of 紙kami (paper), 神kami (deity), and 剣tsurugi (sword).
